The plight of Singaporean PMETs

Thanks to the internet, the pathetic plight of Singaporean PMETs are getting an airing that otherwise would not be heard. A blogger, SNG’s article in Gilbert’s Transitioning Org blog, dedicated to jobless Singaporeans, is being reposted in TRE. Another article of a graduate Singaporeans who had to hide his degree qualification just to get a temp job and was asked to leave when he applied for a permanent position was also posted in TRE. They discovered that he had a degree and not just a diploma.

Some may denounce him for lying. But why must he lie about his higher qualification? Isn’t that something to be proud of, to be added in the CV to enhance the chances of an application and higher pay? How can the situation become so ridiculous that I can’t even laugh? Singaporeans hiding their higher qualifications in order to get a lower grade and lower paying job? If this is the case, the call for Singaporeans not to pursue university education may be the result of this new reality. And there is no need for more universities unless to cater for foreign students.

In SNG’s case, he managed to work 17 months out of 36 months, and not that he is not qualified and lack experience. He has worked overseas as an expat as well which means he was good enough. And now finding a job here is so difficult for him.

And we have more than a million foreigners happily working here, maybe nearer to two millions if PRs are included. And many more foreigners are happily rushing here as jobs are plenty and easy to get except for Singaporeans. What the hell is going on?

What is happening? Dunno leh. Maybe Singaporeans are really daft. Maybe the local universities, despite their world class rankings, are teaching craps or producing crappy graduates. Maybe Singaporeans are basically unemployable because they are Singaporeans and companies, organisations, institutions and even ministries are finding it more beneficial to hire foreigners or PRs.

I have only one conclusion. Singaporeans are simply disease. They carry a disease that made them unemployable. Or if they are employable, at most up to 50 or maybe lower, about 40. After that their mind will shrivel and their intellect and ability to work just diminished and no longer productive. They should then be despatched to the lepers colony till death comes.

So it is paramount that the City must import more foreigners to boost up the City’s productivity and to replace the diseased Singaporeans.

  3. Which law or logic assures that graduates of universities with world class ranking will find jobs easily?

    They are 2 separate matters.

As separate as your money and my money.

  4. Which govt in the world let foreigners to compete equally or even discriminate against their citizens in their country for jobs?

  5. Not all Sinkie PMETs or graduates lost their jobs or unable to find a job. Only the daft and unlucky ones.

Just like not all voters voted PAP. Only 60%.

  6. It is a growing trend as the number of graduates, local and foreign, is increasing yearly. Government surely know over supply will cause unemployment or underemployment to occur.

It is will be very hard to ask an employer to opt a more expensive one when a cheaper is available. Especially when GLCs also preference using foreigners.
It is government's responsibility to enforce strict ratio of foreign graduates entering.

There is also urgent need to study CPF cut now to stay competitive as we are entering salary depress world.

  7. Like I said, unless you understand the doctrine and the playbook from what these policies are based on, you'll be poking around in the dark inventing all sorts of "conspiracy theories" and never get close to the answers. You'll be walking around for years in a numb mental state asking "Why? Why? Why they do this? Why did they do this to me?..."

What surprises me is the out-of-job managers and executives lack of clarity. Most of them are fully aware about the underlying doctrines -- being practitioners themselves when in corporate life -- but refuse to accept that they are caught up on the "downside" because of the very same doctrines and management "philosophies" they used on others.

For the reader interested, here are a few references (there are many off shoots, but these are the main guys):

    1. Peter Drucker -- management by objectives

    2. Tom Peters -- reducing business overheads, thriving on chaos, personal responsibility, the use of technology which forces people to "reinvent themselves" to remain "relevant" as "value adders", especially in the service economy because the manufacturing economy has succeeded in doing more with less (in terem of labour force) because of technological innovation.

    3. The Koch Brothers; David and Charles -- MBM or Market Based Management aka "The Science of Success" (WTF? Science??)

    4. Jack Welch: "Embrace change and lead". Destroy the corporation before someone else does .Create chaos -- then send out your energetic managers to lead, exploit opportunities by "facing reality".

Singapore is the "new America" in terms of management doctrine. This is what's going on. I've spoken to so many power brokers and they all sing from the same hymn books.

So if you're one of those who complain about change, are not interested in developing your own "personal brand", cannot function in chaos because you are so wedded to your own "security", need to be "micro managed" because you can't act decisively, prefer to be protected form open, unfair competition rather than meeting it head on...then, sorry to say, you're OUT of the game.

And yes, you should never lie on your resume. No HR manager will condone it. Just speak the truth: I have a university degree but I lost my job. If you tell lies, you lose your integrity. One has to resist the urge to "save face" by telling lies. People tend to be more empathetic if you speak the truth. If you lie, they become hostile and untrusting.

    Not difficult lah!
Just vote Opposition in GE 2016.
    And see what happens next.
Suddenly, the PAPigs will start to be Pro Singaporean.

  10. We can make do with lower pay, lesser jobs and lesser foreigners as long as the cost of living, housing, transportations are brought down. For all you know, with lower pay, with lower cost of living, your purchasing power could be higher and quality of life better.

  11. The Singapore elites want to spend their money overseas.

They don't want to spend their money on cheap food and cheap housing in Singapore.

With your type of thinking and attitude.

  12. Plenty of degrees (or even phd) cannot find jobs in americunt and europe. Plenty of very highly educated eastern europeans were working as construction/temp jobs in western europe. It is no big deal to have a degree these days so it is also no big deal to be underemployed or unemployed. Keep on looking and trying.

  13. The government painted a rosy future that that does not exist.

The global job participation rate tells it all.

Furthermore many jobs are automated and computerized.

    Discontent will only raise

  14. So long as they can set their own pay and the daft are more than 50%, the PAPigs can remain in their ivory towers oblivious to our plight.

What are you going to do about it?

  16. As a Singaporean why must I be competing fairly with foreigners? I want to be treated like a Singaporean in my country.

Shit to any party that wants to treat Singaporeans equally like foreigners. I vote for the party that says treat Singaporeans better than foreigners.

    Hire Singaporeans first.
