The
cost of raising children here is easily half a million by the time the child
graduated from university, and that is a local university. A foreign university
could add a couple of hundred thousands more, depending on the type of courses
and which country he went to. Just talk economics, as a digit in the GDP number
game, the returns must be profitable for the whole process, minus all the
emotional and other considerations.
For
an outlay of half a million, the child must at least bring in an income of the
same amount just to break even. Then include the cost he/she would need to
incur, excluding his personal expenses to keep him alive, say housing and car,
both items would cost him easily two to three millions more. Simply, the child
must bring in an income of $2 ½ or $3 million to make the whole effort
worthwhile.
Assuming a productive life is 30 years and additional work years are for retirement
expenses, one would need an income of $100k on the average. Anyone earning less
than this amount is a losing proposition, a losing investment. And not having a
child, a couple could save a million or two for their own. Would that be a
better option than to bring up a child or two? If one just thinks economic, the
answer is obvious.
That's why Sinkies must be smart lah!
ReplyDeleteVote Opposition to bring down the cost of bringing up children.

ReplyDelete[Don't look down on holders of foreign degrees]
"RECENTLY, my daughter graduated with a degree from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT)
offered via the Singapore Institute of Management,
and began looking for a job.
During her job search, some recruitment agencies and employers asked her
why she chose to pursue an RMIT degree.
One recruitment agency employee even told her
not to raise her hopes too high
as her degree was not from a local university.

Just like our replaced PMETs.
ReplyDelete9.54 am, press reported that some 10% of fresh graduates are jobless from local uni. Each year the three uni admitted at least 15,000 students means 1500 graduates each year are jobless not including those from graduating from overseas. So five years mean at least 7500 unemployed graduates yet we admits thousands of FT from questionable universities.
ReplyDeleteSo you tell me, knn or not?
You are unemployed?
ReplyDeleteThe deaf frogs cannot hear you.
They are deaf to all criticism.
So what to do?
Vote Opposition lah!
Or if you are stupid.
Vote PAP first.
Then every night, go and beg your PAP MP during the Meet-The-People-Session.
RB, I would like to defer from your view of child bearing. I am not challenging your economic calculation. The figures are certainly true.
ReplyDeleteWhat I am not agreeable is to lump child bearing with economic gain/loss. This is not right! We have to start thinking of our future as human. Child bearing is our responsibility to the human race. If everybody just think of economic gain, then the whole human race is doomed. Whether we agree with government's policy is another issue. We can always place our vote to another party.
God bless our future generations. We have the duty to set the environment right at this moment so that they have a better future.
I believe the Poor Also Pay government has the same thinking that's why they take in a lot of instant adult. Everything to them is dollar and cent.
ReplyDeleteIf the $ cost of having a child prevents you from having one, this is good. People should have children only because they want to and truly love them.
ReplyDeleteThe payback from having them is priceless. No monetary figure can or should be attached to this. Having kids is a labour of love.
Hi Anon 1:56,
ReplyDeleteChild bearing is indeed more than just economics. The sad thing is that the value of child bearing has been degraded to only economics by supposedly wise people. Even citizenship is meaningless when seen from the point of when a person is valued only for his monetary value.
Child bearing means a lot of things to many people. Some is just a natural thing, some just love to have children. It should not be economics and neither should be a responsibility to anyone, family, country or the human race. If there is any responsibility it must be the responsibility to the life, the child that is to be borne.
I would not bother if there is no more human race on earth. The human spirit could be better off in the spiritual form and not be enslaved in a human body that will expire and subject to pain and rot.
Hah! So who's reducing Singaporeans to "economic digits" now? LOL! You Opposition lamers are really something else... anyhow hamtam... admit it, NOTHING the government does is right for you, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteHere comes a succesful dog.
ReplyDeleteYes, it is painfully obvious: raising children is only feasible if you can afford it.
ReplyDeleteIf you can't afford it, be happy. Keep fucking and enjoying life :-)
To give the child(ren) the best, the parents must not burden by cost(money/finance) to bring up the kid(s). The marriage and love of the parents themselves must not be broken and or challenged by loss of job and or income. Due to the high cost of everything, the threats and challenges are ever present and there is always the situation of children not getting the best they deserve.
ReplyDeleteEducation, sturdy and looking for job after that are other challenges the parents and children invariably have to face when the latter grow up. Indeed it is challenge after challenge and the cycle may have to repeat generation after generation. Some will make it good but many will end up miserable in the later part of their existences.
Do think carefully before making any baby in Sin, avoid bringing anyone to suffer, it is quite a sin to do so.
patriot
That is the reason why capitalistic government promote gay marriages and making things difficult to set up family. Time and effort to bring up a kid has too little economic benefits and consuming too much resources. To them, it is most ideal when everyone is a working adult contributing to the GDP. This kind of thinking is the first step to detroy a country future. This type of government has to be voted out.
ReplyDeleteIf you want the best for your kids, migrate is the only option. Sinky is on the way to be given away thru lies and damn lies from the elites ahnehs - many residing in sentosa. They have destroyed pap, they are on the way to destroy sinkies and sinky.
ReplyDeleteBlah Blah Blah... bunch of Opposition losers crying money no enough... blame Government... blame foreigners... blame EVERYONE.. except YOURSELF!
ReplyDeleteHi Raymond, welcome to the blog. You sounded like a very successful and contented Singaporean. Good for you. By the way, are you a new citizen?
ReplyDelete@429:
ReplyDelete>> If you want the best for your kids, migrate is the only option.
I don't agree. I think the BEST option is to pull your head in, plan to have a family by first ensuring you have the means to start one.
Having a family is not a "right". It is a privilege, a "luxury"; and a very high value luxury to most people. It does not, and should not come "free". It requires SACRIFICE: YOUR sacrifice, not others who might be planning to have their own family.
@Raymond 1001:
I agree! Well said! ;-)
Of all the things the human race is producing, which is the most important?
ReplyDeleteI think all the sophisticated machinery and equipment, gadgets, cars, planes, computers, food etc etc, nothing is more important than producing babies, producing lives.
But with the cost of living, producing lives is not so costly a thing to do that many would not want to do so. For those in the third world, they continue to produce but unable to sustain the lives or give the lives a good decent living.
What a contradiction!
