'Electricity prices will rise by an average of 2.4 per cent this quarter – from 1 July to 30 September. The new rate for households will be 24.13 cents per kWh, up from last quarter’s 23.56 cents per kWh.
This is the fifth straight quarterly rise in electricity rates. Compared to Apr 2009, electricity tariff for households has increased by 33.8 per cent.'
The above was copied from Temasek Review.
At the rate these jokers are increasing the tariff, I think pretty soon, we may have to resort back to the good ole days of the kerosene lamp and cooking by charcoal and tree cuttings.
ReplyDeleteThis round of increase cannot be justified because fuel oil prices are stabilizing if not on the decline. The excuse this time is higher capital operating costs. Yeah right. Higher capital costs rise because of more demands on the grid due to the two IRs plus the F1 for night racing. Three events for which the average Singaporean is nonchalant about.
Many people don't understand how economics theory works. High costs, high prices, are good as they lead to more spending and more liquidity and more growth. There must be growth or else it will be known as recession which is bad.
ReplyDeleteSo keep the wheel of growth spinning and you can sell the same 4 rm HDB flat of 40 years old from its original price of $20k to $500k. And they will tell you it is good value for money.
This is magic in economics. Just keep pushing everything higher and higher and higher and higher...never ending. Then you can have economic growth forever.
Wah, higher usage by two IRs and F1 circuit we also must bear the consequences.
ReplyDeleteThat is why don't be too happy about long long walkways. When repairs start to happen, you know who will suffer the consequences.
Then they will tell you: you asked for it!
Wally ah.
ReplyDeleteYou are not updated .I have started using kerosene lamp and candle for some time discreetly to lesson my burden. But pls dun mention about it anymore.I fear one day they came to know and will make burning candle or using kerosene lamp an offence citing safety reason.
Shh ...Tolong...
The next time Singaporeans look for a home, get one nearest the lamp post, that maybe the only light source one can afford.

Count yourselves lucky Singaporeans. At least you don't have 4 seasons.
ReplyDeleteHere in WA the BArnett govt has hiked power and gas twice already and has promised of futher hikes next year. We now pay 25% more, and more pain to follow.
In NZ they've just passed a carbon initiative which will add several hundred dollars a year to the average familiy budget.
Singapore? Still cheap lah!
Please Matilah, don't give them ideas.
ReplyDeleteWhen they hear cheap, cheap, cheap, they will take out their sharp knives to behead the chickens.
With so many people farting, we shall tap this as a new source of energy, methane, or some like to call it gas.
