President Tharman good enough to be PM Tharman?

Tharman as President of Singapore will create a very interesting scenario. Foremost, despite a few racists that keep condemning Singapore Chinese as racist and quoting a few cuckoo incidents to justify their exaggerated and mischievous description of the Chinese majority here, the general view on the ground is that Tharman is extremely popular and well liked. He is being rooted to win the election hands down with a huge majority, and with most of the votes coming from the Chinese population, the same people being accused of as racist especially against Indians. Browsing through the varies media sites, main stream and social media, the impression of Tharman by everyone is fairly similar. No one is disturbed by his Indian race. His race is never an issue except maybe over representation of the Indians in the Singapore polity, in high places and in the corridors of power.

When Tharman is popularly elected as the next President, would this dispel once for all, the accusation that Singapore Chinese are racist? Would the real racists that have been making these mischievous allegations swallow their bad vibes and acknowledge that Singapore Chinese are not racist?

Another interesting point that could be linked to Tharman's coming Presidency, if the result is a landslide victory against a Chinese candidate, and overwhelmingly voted to the top job in the island by the Chinese majority, is the question that has been troubling many politically aware Singaporeans.

If Singaporeans are ready for an Indian President, intentionally voted an Indian as the next President, would the often touted narrative that Singapore is not ready for an Indian PM still holds?  The positions may be different, a President versus a PM, but both are the top two political jobs in the island. The only difference is that the President is elected by the people, the masses. The PM is not elected by the people in an open election, but chosen by his little circle of party members.

Can the election of Tharman as an Indian President change anything in Singapore politics? Would the thinking that Singapore is not ready for an Indian PM becomes a myth? Further, the Constitution does not rule out an ex President from becoming a PM.  Could Tharman rejoin the Party after his Presidential term and vie to be the PM as a politician?

What do you think?

  1. It is funny in Singapore, we are told that the highest power is the peoples. We are also told that the President is the next highest power and then came the Parliament representatives. However, 2/3 majorities of Parliament representatives can paralysed the right of referendum of the people powers. Some peoples would be called free riders.

His saying-" The President Duty is NOT to challenge the Government.

LKY would be stirring in his grave or Urn.

The President as envisioned by LKY is the Second Security to check and monitor the Ruling Government of the Day.

And He , aiyo Mr Goh, Go Go just wanted to collect another extra millions and have Prestige and Pride just to be a Figure Head President.

If ever He and Tarman were to contest.

  3. Tharman's popularity is based on his election results in GRC and many jump on the bandwagon to interpret that as the whole of Singapore. Its just herd mentality.
Ultimately, he's still seen as a PAP candidate and we already have 2 successive presidents from the Party.
If there is a credible independent candidate, Tharman should be happy if he polls 60%.

  4. https://www.tremeritus.net/2023/06/16/why-tharman-is-not-fit-to-be-president/

"He has demonstrated clearly to me that he will always choose money and career prospects over doing the right thing and that he is not a brave man."

Singkies should ask the same about Halimah, "did she act impartially as speaker in parliament and performed without fear nor favour as president ?" "Or in reality, absolutely USELESS ?"

    - it's a no brainer she was appointed president to make things easier for the Prime Moron and his Pap stooges.
The same can be said of Tharman when he agreed to replace Halimah. LOL
