Would there be a real shift towards more for Singaporeans from more for residents

“And we will be passing a new law to ensure that all employers uphold fair employment practices. We will not hesitate to take action against any employer who discriminates on the basis of nationality or other factors, namely, age, sex, disability, race and religion. At the same time, we will continue to update our policies to manage the inflow of work pass holders and ensure they come into sectors where we need them the most, to complement, not to displace, our local workforce.”....

And now his first major policy statement as PM to be.

And I want to assure everyone, Singaporeans and Singaporean workers will always be at the centre of everything we do.

The above quotes from Lawrence Wong are taken from a post by Tan Bah Bah in theindependent.sg.

This PM to be is perhaps the only minister that has the gut to use the word 'Singaporean' so bravely. Many ministers would not even dare to mention this word at all. All they would say would be 'residents' ,  'locals' but not Singaporeans. The word Singaporean is taboo, diseased to many ministers and MPs. Official statistics would be depleted of this word, being replaced by locals or residents.

So, how real is Lawrence Wong on this shift towards more Singaporeans and not more locals or residents? What is wrong with the marginalisation of Singaporeans versus the marginalisation of foreigners aka PRs and EP holders? For a while, it seems that marginalisation of foreigners packaged under the term locals or residents is something to be avoided, something fearful and unacceptable. But marginalisation of Singaporeans is ok. Singaporeans can't fit in go to be Grab drivers, don't be choosy, got job very good oredy.  Foreign talents are so talented, no degree also can. There is no need to mention the word Singaporeans, not even mentioned in official statistics. And that was the politically correct thing to do and to say. The meek Singaporeans would not dare to vote out the PAP for fear of losing their jobs to foreigners. Can you believe that?

How would this pro Singaporean policy play out should Lawrence Wong become the next PM? Would he be given the green light to be more pro Singaporeans and not pro foreigners disguised under the terms locals and residents in economic opportunities?

It is too early to tell, too premature to tell. Perhaps a big swing in votes in the next GE would be needed to make the difference, that lip service would not be enough, not acceptable. Unless and until the daft are willing to stand up to demand for better opportunities and recognition, to be favoured over foreigners in their own country, I am not very hopeful that anything will change for the better for Singaporeans.

Bring in more foreigners to create jobs for daft Singaporeans, like Grab drivers and hawkers to provide food for foreigners. Good jobs for foreigners, NS for Singaporeans. The foreigners are looking down on daft, no talent, disgusting Singaporeans in the workplace. And the trend is for the foreigners to gang up to get rid of Singaporeans and to replace them with more foreigners. And this is happening in Singapore.

Who allowed this to happen? Would it continue at the expense of the original Singaporeans, the people that sacrificed their whole life for the country, as NS men? The people that would defend and die for this country, not the foreigners, not the residents, not the locals. Oh thank you very much, $100 to show our appreciation for a life of sacrifice, including compromised job opportunities.

Why are they disadvantaged, sidelined, their jobs, good jobs, taken over by the foreigners and they ended up unemployed, underemployed and being looked down by foreigners, pushed around by foreigners and discriminated by foreigners, even scorned by foreigners as no talents, no experienced to be employed?

In the past, when our currency was weak, when overseas jobs were paying better, some of our well educated went overseas for better opportunities. Today, they went overseas because jobs were difficult to come by in their home island, taken or given to foreigners. And they have to settle for lesser paying jobs and a weaker foreign currency vis a vis Singapore dollar. When would well educated and qualified Singaporeans be able find relevant jobs in Singapore and not be forced to work in lesser paying jobs overseas? There are a few hundred thousand PME jobs in Singapore that are now filled by foreigners, deprived from Singaporeans!

PS. Happy Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

  1. Real or not, pull down the curtains and we shall see. But then, anything behind the curtain is not for us to see or know, only hear about. So, is this the same product advertising under a different packaging. We already have new packaging for bus drivers, gardeners, toilet cleaners, table wipers. These are jobs reserved for Singaporeans, while the best jobs still go to foreigners with the argument that we do not have that kind of talent.

The saying that we need foreign talents for some jobs is a very wide definition and subject to interpretation and who draws the line?

  2. The fact still remains as:

    "Singaporeans and Singapore WORKERS".

What does this word "WORKERS" mean?

  3. It is imperative that we hear the leaders telling the world: "We are a nation of 3.4 million." and not "We are a nation of 5.7 million", then we can be more sure that they are truly sincere . . .

  4. Remember the one time front runner for PM position disparages Singaporeans behind closed doors. What they say in public may be nice to hear, but behind closed doors it is a totally different.

That brings me to the comment by one time opposition MP the late Ling How Dong's 'Don't talk cock' comments in Parliament and was censured. At least he was honest with his words.

  5. I do not doubt that Lawrence Wong is sincere in his declaration that "Singaporeans and Singaporean workers will always be at the centre of everything we do". The million dollar question is, will he keep his word if his multi million dollar annual salary is at stake?

  7. National Service should be abolished.
Firstly, no one will want the Tiny Barren Rock, it is a liability.
    Secondly,

It is a land that only belongs to the

  8. Why complain so much??? If you vote them in, you must live with all they have dished out for you. Singaporeans are so kia chenghu that they are very kwai and with a few S$ angpau they will be induced to vote for the clear and huge PAP mandate. After GE, Singaporeans will spend the next 4 years complaining all over again. Then comes the few S$ angpau before GE and history repeats all over again. A country of complaining sheeples!!!!!

  9. Did you copy that law correctly? It will be illegal to give preference to Singapore citizens. You happy with that?

One Singapore citizen at the core. 10 foreigners surrounding. The core does the most work at the lowest pay.

  10. Ehhhh RB, you don't know the Muslim holidays haarr?!?!?

It's Aidiladha lah, not aidilfitri. Fitri over in April liao.

Anyway why use Arabic words instead of local Malay words?

Whatever happened to Hari Raya Puasa and Hari Raya Haji?!?!?

  11. There was a time when govt speeches & news reports that used "Singaporeans" also included PRs, so don't be too happy. Don't know if he meant citizens only or what. Would be crystal clear if he had used "citizens". Even then there are so many new citizens now -- as long salary more than $7K can easily get pink IC eventually. Many new citizens have daughters becoz of NS. If sons, then many retain original foreign citizenship for them to avoid NS. There are a few chains of international schools with cheaper school fees that cater for such sons. Smart people. No wonder we want to recruit them as Singaporeans.

  12. People don't know PAP love double talk ?

    He says is

"“And I want to assure everyone, Singaporeans and Singaporean workers will always be at the centre of everything we do.”

Why true Singaporeans so easily taken in ?

Don't be surprised that he treat foreigners as Singaporeans by just saying that since they stay in Singapore, they are treated as Singaporeans too, it just playing with words and nonsense, that's it. Nothing more.

PAP can says HDB is affordable because one can buy them with salary of $1000, what nonsense they cannot give ?

Don't be naive, after all these decades, believe still in bullshit and fairy tales ?
