Chinese FM confirmed that China and the Solomon Islands have formally signed the security cooperation framework agreement
Much to the chagrin of Australia and the United States, the Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed that China and the Solomon Islands have formally signed the security cooperation framework agreement.
Australia and the US had frantically exerted unprecedented pressure on the Solomon Islands to thwart the security cooperation deal between China and the island nation and drive a wedge between the two countries.
"We have asked the Solomon Islands respectfully to consider not signing the agreement," said Zed Seselja, Australian Minister for International Development and the Pacific, according to a statement after Seselja met with the island nation's prime minister Manasseh , according to Reuters on Wednesday. Sogavare find it "insulting" as the Australian minister took a condescending attitude and disrespected the Pacific island country's sovereignty.- Anonymous
This just shows the crappy relationship Australia has with the Solomon Islands for all this while. When China starts doing win/win deals with SI, then Australia start to wake up its ideas. Its kind of like an employer giving an employee a raise after the latter resigned for better pay elsewhere. A little bit late mate.
ReplyDeleteBut it super good news, having a Chinese presence so close to Australia will sure as heck irritate the hell out of them, exactly what USA is doing to China with its military bases as well as interfering with HK/Taiwan issues. This is called having a taste of your own medicine
