Is it Singapore's responsibility to solve India's unemployment problem and also to provide education to Indians?

Below is from an article posted in www.theindependent in Dec 2019.

'Indian nationals who were awarded scholarships advertised by the Ministry of Education (MOE) are set to arrive in Singapore in the December-January period, in time for the next school year. The two scholarships that are administered by the MOE are the A*STAR Youth Scholarship and the SIA Youth Scholarship.

Both scholarships are open to Indian nationals only.

The A*STAR Youth Scholarship is one that allows youth scholars from India to study in selected Singapore schools from Secondary 3 to Pre-University 2, until they earn the Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education Advanced Level (GCE ‘A’-Level) (or equivalent) certificate. The scholarship is renewed annually, subject to the satisfactory performance of the scholar.

Applications were accepted from 24 June to 28 July this year and had to undergo a selection test in Delhi in September, followed by a round of interviews in October. The scholarships were awarded last month and the scholars are expected to arrive in Singapore this month and begin Secondary 3 next year....

Earlier this year, Education Minister Ong Ye Kung revealed that MOE spends about S$238 million a year on scholarships and tuition grants for foreign students studying in Singapore. S$108 million out of the S$238 million is spent on tuition grants and the remaining S$130 million is spent on scholarships.

In response to questions by Workers’ Party (WP) politician Leon Perera, Mr Ong assured that foreign students are admitted into institutes of higher learning (IHLs) only after “all Singaporean students who meet the standards have been admitted” and that “No Singaporean is ever displaced from institutes of higher learning because of an international student.”....

The ruling party politician added that annual government spending on scholarships and tuition grants for foreign students has fallen by about 50 per cent over the past 10 years.

Responding to Mr Ong’s revelation, another WP politician Yee Jenn Jong pointed out that this means the Government used to spend about S$476 million on foreign students in the past:'

So much public money have been used to provide education to foreigners. $476m a year, now $238m a year and thinking this is small change. Spend OPM damn 'tua kang'. Why aren't such money be used to support our very own children? This is like coveting other people's wives. Trying to snatch other people's children and hoping that they would become useful to us. This kind of mentality/policy is nothing to be proud of. Morally not very right. Unethical, and unfair to our own people and our own children.

What do you think? Thou shalt not covet other people's children.

  1. Mr Wong also shed light on the admission process for international students. The AUs first admit Singaporean students who are able to meet their admission standards, before raising the bar a few notches to admit a small number of international students, over and above the local students.

Asserting that “no Singaporean is displaced from an AU because of an international student,” Mr Wong revealed that around 1,600 foreign students received tuition grants in each cohort over the last five years. This amounts to less than 10 per cent of each intake....The Minister promised: “We will continue to review and adjust the number of international students on tuition grant in the future, taking into consideration the quality of applicants and other factors.”

While Mr Wong asserted that the Government’s priority remains to support locals in finding employment given the current job scarcity, he said that international tuition grant holders who are obliged to serve a three-year bond after graduation will also be treated fairly. These students can serve out their obligations in Singapore or with Singapore-registered companies abroad.

  2. PM-in-waiting Heng Swee Kiat is going to raise the GST that we pay to 9% from 7%, in part to help fund these India nationals to study here for free, while we have to pay thousands of dollars for our children's tertiary education in our local educational institutions.

The thought makes us feel seething anger!

  3. From the above comments by Lawrence Wong, Singapore is financing 1 foreign student for every 9 Singaporean student using taxpayers' money.

Is this too much, is this necessary? Why the need to spend so much money to pay for foreign students just to give exposure to foreigners to our students? Singapore is a little village in the wilderness, Singaporeans never see foreigners, did not have any experience with foreigners if there is no foreigners in the universities?

Is this too high a bill to pay just to get an experience with foreigners and for what when more than 95 percent of the Singaporeans would not need the experience to make them a better person or more employable in foreign countries.

And what is the worth of these experience when it did not count in their resume on having international exposure?

  5. I think if u wanted our students to have foreign exposure why not send 100% of students fully paid exchange program. The overseas exchange program will really give them exposure Inc living in foreign countries for 6 months. Can use the few hundred million on this program

  6. I spent about 10000 for my son exchange program. For the money can send 250000 students overseas. If ownself paying half 50000 students

  7. You know, they used to send younger students on overseas exchange lasting a week or two. How much do they really benefit from that? And the irony is that in years past, they even threatened those who cannot afford to go, without the funds, that they cannot graduate without going for the trip. It is blackmail clear and simple!

How many parents would let their children suffer the indignity of being left out? So they scrimped and scraped to allow their children to join.

  9. Every time PAP's self-enriched Multi-Millionaire Ministers say they will do something for the people, the people had better be very scared because whatever they will be doing for you, the money is going to come from you.

So, it is better that they do not do anything for the people. They just do nothing and draw their obscene and unconscionable big fat pay every year until they dropped dead or get kicked out for good of the people.

    It's time to wake up!

  10. Hi RB, you asked two questions as the header to your today's post. The answers to both your questions are YES and YES. That is what your MP Heng has signed up to. Why not? Your PAP government is very pro-India. All PMETs from India are Talents. Remember, Heng and the PAP government said these FTs are in Singapore to create job for Singaporeans. This is the reality and if you do not think so, then vote them out. Anyway 61% Singaporeans think the PAP government is doing a good job. QED.

  11. WOW!!!!!!! Just read this " Majority of Singaporeans polled agree it is important for Singapore to remain open to foreigners: REACH " So, why are you complaining Uncle RB???

  12. 61% Singapore voters has approved of what the PAP ministers are saying and doing. Whether rightly or wrongly, morally or immorally, ethically or unethically, constitutionally or unconstitutionally, idiotically or wisely, sanely or insanely, IT DOES NOT MATTER.

The 61% voters are the culprits, the instigators, the accessories, the suicidals, and the ones to blamed.

Until such time the 61% come to their senses, there will not be any change.

So, near with the pains and madness.

  13. 'Majority of Singaporeans polled' is an empty quote. Just do a poll of the people here and see if is it the same as that of REACH. Do it RB!

  14. If those foreigners digging at roadside, labouring at building site, collecting refuse are considered 'talents', I think the word 'talent' has been degraded to it's lowest human level by any definition.

Rest assured it was a case of mistaken identity, the same as mistaking cotton wool as grown on sheep. I just wonder which prestigious university taught that!

  15. Just great that we have so many Indian FTs helping Singaporeans to be employed. Creating jobs for Singaporeans is such a benevolent gesture by our Indian Asean member. Thank you for being so kind to Singapore. HSK is so thoughtful and efficient and worthy to be our next PM. Cannot wait for that change over.

  16. Lee Hsien Loong vs Leong Sze Hian

The hearing for the above defamation case ended yesterday (9 Oct 2020).

The trial judge Justice Aedit Abdullah gave directions to counsel for both parties on what he would like them to address in their submissions.

    His directions were as follows:

"In particular, I want parties to address me on that point, whether this is the kind of republication that is actionable, given the circumstances relied on by Mr Lim’s client.

The other, I think, aspect of it is perhaps foreshadowed in Mr Lim Tean’s opening remarks about how the shape of defamation should be looked at, given the presence now of the POFMA legislation and other developments in Singapore. So to what extent is defamation still to be understood in its traditional context, and how much, if anything, should be read from the introduction of POFMA and what is the appropriate balance then between defamation and Article 14 rights under the Constitution."

  18. Why aren't Indian F.T's not helping their own shit country to do it better in infrastructure, living standards and clean up their filthy rivers and dirty habits. Their own country is one big shithole.

Red Dot does not need their help. They are here to pollute our clean environment by getting drunk, spreading diseases like COVID19 and polluting minds about caste and gang rape ideas.

Goldfish eyes on both sides of the head cannot see the above problems. Cannot wait to see Goldish get cooked by the Indians by the next election, in Indian curry fishhead.

  19. 61% according to Indian Accounting? Shouldn't it be 75% now?

  20. 'Red Dot does not need their help. They are here to pollute our clean environment by getting drunk, spreading diseases like COVID19 and polluting minds about caste and gang rape ideas.'

That's what you think. But the incompetents thought very highly of the Indians. Brought here to run our national bank, to clean up our environment, to teach our daft how to work hard, how to be good in ITs, to run our trains, to run our airports and hospitals and to teach our students in our universities.

Without the Indian talents our leeders would be lost and Singapore will sink into a third world country, become a shit hole.

Be grateful, be very grateful of the Indian talents. Surely more will be brought in to replace our useless PMETs.

  21. When is Modi going to confer India's highest honour to the team of Singaporeans that made this possible with the CECA? At the very least these architects of CECA and solving India's unemployment problem and helping to provide free education to Indians should be given a position like the chancellors of some universities.

India has plenty of universities and giving a few of these seats to honour Singaporeans that have contributed to India in such a big way is the least India can do as one by one these architects would be retiring and have a lot of free time to help India.

  22. What that front-page state-sponsored survey report implies is that of the 40% of the votes that go against the PAP elites in the recent General Election, 26% don't disagree with the PAP's pro-foreigner policies; only 14% disagree with the PAP elites!

They should have made the numbers a bit more credible!

Also, the next day after that survey report (which is today), state media runs another front-page article titled "Singapore's reputation for being open to talent at risk?", which is careful not to mention anything about India nationals. The closest that they mention on anyone in relation to the India sub-continent is a guy from Bangladesh who works as an analyst.

  23. COVID-19 Alert!

India just surpassed the 7 million mark to reach 7,053,806, closing the gap with America First leading country's 7,718,947 cases, according to Johns Hopkins data.

Still no entry ban on India travelers by Singapore's very India-friendly politicians.

  24. India racked up a million cases in just 13 days. Let them take the lead. After all they are a talented and First World Country. Even Red Dot leaders think so. How can we ever argue with that?
