Now a new initiative is seeking to repurpose the funpacks to help migrant workers.
Started by A Good Space — a co-operative that brings together individuals and companies for charitable causes — the initiative is calling on Singaporeans to fill their funpacks with items that may be useful for migrant workers.
"As we celebrate National Day, we hope to take this opportunity to express our gratitude for the sacrifices that our Migrant Worker community has made in building our beloved city," wrote the organisers on a petition linked to the initiative.
Organisers have suggested items such as hand sanitizers, kettles, portable chargers, masks, or earphones... the mothership.
Saw this kind message in the mothership. Many Singaporeans who have done well, who have lived a life without knowing poverty and hardship, are grateful for the good life they are enjoying. And they can relate this to the tough life the foreign workers are having building more HDB flats for them.
While many Singaporeans are pulling their heart strings to want to share their blessings with the less fortunates, let them not forget the Pioneer Generations and the Merdeka Generations that build this foundation of wealth for them to show their kindness. The earlier generations of Singaporeans slogged real hard to build from scratch a prosperous Singapore today. It was really tough. Their life, the working condition, their pay, their living quarters, were no better than those of the foreign workers today. They did not have a govt with all the machinery and regulations to protect them.
Many from these two generations are still alive, jobless and scrapping for a living, living on charity, some working as cleaners, sweepers, security guards if they are lucky. Some are living from paycheck to paycheck and considered themselves lucky. Many have virtually no more income and everyday alive is a dreadful day wondering where the food is coming from. The extremely high cost of living has made staying alive in this island a nightmare waking up for some people of these generations. Poverty has returned to their lives. Offering them piecemeal help is not acceptable and unable to sustain a decent life with a little dignity.
May the good samaritans think of a better way to ease the lives of these generations fell by the wayside of mainstream Singapore. Show some real gratitude to the people that made the new generations of Singaporeans able to make millions so easily and living in posh landed properties and a life of luxury unknown to these pioneering generations. They were the ones that made this possible today, nothing the foreign workers can come near to. The pioneering generations contributed to the whole infrastructure of Singapore to make things happened today. They planted the trees that provide the shades and the fruits for the Singaporeans today, not counting the cash stashed away in the nation's reserves. In those days, not only the majority of the Singaporeans were poor. The state was also poor with an almost empty treasury. The pioneers and merdeka generations and several generations to come became NS men with a miserly $90 allowance when their families needed them to bring home the bacon.
Through thrift and sacrifices, the pioneering generations made the first pot of gold for Singapore, literally. And it was from this pot of gold that more gold were accumulated. There would be no GIC or Temasek with billions and trillions to feed the foreigners and Singaporeans they employed to manage the pot of gold. And to think that many of the senior citizens are struggling to live in this very expensive island with virtually no income is sheer ungratefulness.
Show some kindness and gratitude to the people that really made the difference to your lives today. The foreign workers are just passing by and doing their bits and paid accordingly. What is frightening is their counterparts that are devouring Singapore at the higher end of the food chain and might take over this island built by our pioneering generations as their own and discard the pioneers as unnecessary inconvenience, deadwoods.
Have any of the foreigners that made it good here show any gratitude to the Singaporeans that made it easy and plentiful for them, or instead showing contempt to the Singaporeans? Have they been taking their good life for granted, that they deserved it here more than the Singaporeans that built this place from scratch?
When would the millionaire Singaporeans really think of giving a helping hand to the ones that made it possible for them to make their millions today? Touch their hearts and asked, if the pioneering generations have not made the sacrifice and put in the hard work, made the first pot of gold, what would their lives be today?
Sinkies are very Seh Bok!

ReplyDeleteAnd they went home with all the dough and built castles in the air. We have seen it all.
Even Malaysians working here in normal jobs have nice 'freehold' holiday style homes when they go back. That is their gratitude to Singapore, not the other way round.

Still Remember The NKF Fiasco?
ReplyDeleteThe National Kidney Foundation Singapore scandal, also known as the NKF saga, NKF scandal, or NKF controversy, was a July 2005 scandal involving National Kidney Foundation Singapore (NKF) following the collapse of a defamation trial which it brought against Susan Long and Singapore Press Holdings (SPH). This sparked significant controversy, causing a massive backlash and fallout of donors to the charity; it then subsequently resulted in the resignation of chief executive officer T.T Durai and its board of directors.
Allegations surrounding the scandal included the false declarations on how long NKF's reserves could last, its number of patients, installation of a golden tap in Durai's private office suite, his salary, use of company cars and first-class air travel.
For every dollar donated, only ten cents went to the real beneficiaries, those the donors presumed their every $1 would go to. But it never happened. For years, under Durau's steeringship, 90 cents out of each dollar donated went to cover administrative costs, administrators' fat lucrative pays and annual bonuses, charity shows organizations, promoters, reserves and stocks speculations!
Former NKF patron Tan Choo Leng, wife of Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, sparked further outrage when she remarked that T.T Durai's pay of "S$600,000 a year is peanuts".
President of the National Council of Social Service, Gerard Ee, has since been appointed as interim chairman of the organisation.
A full independent audit on its finances was conducted by KPMG, and a 442-page report released on 19 December 2005 revealed a host of malpractices by the former NKF board and management.
Durai was apprehended on 17 April 2006 and charged under the Prevention of Corruption Act by the Police.
A S$12 million civil suit to recover funds by the new NKF board against Durai and four other former board members began on 8 January 2007.
Do you still trust big charity organizations?
Mr SSO
DeleteOne ex Chinese Boss Like Dotard Trump, maybe now should be kicked out ex what's Lions Club what's Charity Organisation just for name sake ex Chey Man aka Blind Man.
He talked very loudly even with doors closed in his room..Angry even with one ar sia staff boy whose Father is a Doktor introducing his son to be a member of Tanglin Club which he is NOT. Not okay as maybe be kachang puteh businessman but NOT professional.
One fine day he boasted to his secretary on the phone to do some chastity, oops charity works for namesake and same time can made piles of monies from doing this.
He ordered his Lions Club Secretary to order dozens of dozens of pencils from China's Xi production at a cost of fifty cents.
Had them engraved with the logo or emblem of the Lions Club of West Avenue or West Geylang Point.
Then sell as Charity to the daft members of their club or the General Public at 3 dollars per pc.
Two dollars of which goes to the Charity for helping the Geylang Mobs.
For for every piece he swallowed 50cts.
This is what's the Esteemed and Honourable Members of Charity Clubs do charity works.
Let Heavens be the Judge to send them to Hell or Heaven.
Starting a charity organization is a very rewarding endeavour. It doesn't only bring you fame and popularity. It also rewards you Well in funs and funds.

ReplyDeleteThe The founding fathers of the country were selfless, dedicated and devoted their entire life to serve the country and the people except one who had clearly shown an underlying desire to found a dynasty. The second generation leaders were still hardworking but a bit more calculative to make sure they get their worth for their contributions except one whose wife said publicly that $600,000.00 taken by an Indian CEO of the Kidney Foundation as salary is only peanuts and followed later by his own pronouncement that if you earn only $500,000.00 in salary you are a mediocre. No wonder as soon as he assumed leadership of the government he increased the pay of serving politicians by the millions. Then come the third generation and fourth generation leaders some of which arrogantly and publicly claimed that they are the natural aristocrats. They conveniently forget that the million dollar salaries they take and pay themselves are from the people. Then we see somewhat the appearance of nepotism and cronyism where many highly paid posts were created just for that. These leaders are arrogant, selfish, self-satisfying, self-aggrandizement, ostentatious, demeaning and unthoughtful. They are the bane to the people and they are sowing the seeds of national destruction by their mindless acts and behaviour such as granting citizenship so freely to millions of outsiders just to preserve and maintain their power and also their unkindly indiscriminate and immoral increase in taxes which greatly affect the people's livelihood. These disgusting people come into politics to serve themselves and not to serve the people. Since their first priority is to be rich and pompous they should not be in parliament which is not a place for amassing wealth and riches, instead they should have gone into the business world.
A forsaken Singaporean
An octogenarian who sadly and regretfully has seen through the degenerative scenario
Mr Octogenarian.
DeleteOne weeping Minister said Monies Not enough. He had to support his Fathers-in-law and Mothers in law and his own Fathers and Mothers.
Even with his already million dollars salaries plus Part time MP allowances and also his law firm.
He thinks the Rest also no need to support their Fathers in laws and Mothers in laws and own Fathers and Mothers?
Only HIM?
Now promoted Full Minister should be more than ENOUGH.
Or he still thinks that he id better off in private practice in his law firm?
Then go out lah. See how much he can ready earn.
Come on, take the plunge. Scared ah? How lian.
WITHOUT our pioneering generations building up Sinkapoor, do you think all these Cabinet Emperor & monisters of Parti Against People could receive million$$$ and million$$$ each year and living in ivory towers ? This includes those of them who have retired and now living a Swiss standard of living. Now think what about the many PGs of age 70 y.o. and above who are living from day to day till their dying days. Many cannot afford to eat 3 meals a day. Hope these millionaire politicians touch their hearts and have a conscious mind. Now, what are you going to helping them live a decent life (not Swiss standard)? Are you going to share the country's wealth with them or having an altitude of "you die your business" ?
ReplyDeleteThink that poor soul who sky dived from my neigbouring block is in.this scenario.

DeleteHowe Yoon Chong/候永昌, Sin Minister of Health from 1982 to 1985, was the One that proposed the CPF Full Withdrawal be moved from 55 Year Old to 60. His rationale for his proposal was to allow CPF Members to be able to collect a larger sum for retirement. From then on, the CPF Scheme underwent numerous tweaks and do expect more of them.
ReplyDeleteWhilst Aliens are being accommodated with much welcome treatment, the Locals are side-lined. However, the Average Sinkies are as kind and caring to foreigners but treat Fellow Countrymen with You die Your Bizness.
Why are netizens rile by the Behaviour of their Fellow Sinkies ?
Because the Leaders ALREADY shown bad examples.
DeleteThey pampered and loved other children MORE than their own children.
They grabbed the money made by the pioneering generations to pay themselves and foreigners in the millions. Never think of treating the pioneering generations a bit kinder.
ReplyDeleteThere's the saying charity begins at home. In Singapore this means charity begins with the foreigners in our homeland. This is led by our rulers who feed, educate and give jobs to the foreigners, sacrificing our own citizens. To our rulers the poor and needy Singaporeans, both young and old, deserve their fate as it is all their doing because they are stupid, lazy and spendthrift. To them the foreigners on the other hand are hard driving, hard working and talented and deserve all the help they are given, including the reserves built up over decades of toil by our citizens.
