Wuhan Virus - Singapore's vulnerability

SINGAPORE — Singapore’s economy will definitely be impacted by the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak, with the tourism-related sectors being of immediate concern.
In a multi-ministry press conference on Monday (27 January), Minister for Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing said that this includes travel agents, as well as the food and beverage, retail and hospitality sectors.  Yahoo News

The Wuhan virus must have rung a bell in many people's head. Obviously it didn't. Singapore is still thinking it is a small matter. Well, our tourist industry will be hit and some people's jobs and business may be impacted. This kind of thinking is similar to the desire for nuclear energy, nuclear power station. It is small problem and should be ok. The Fukushima disaster, not fully disclosed and many serious consequences covered up, also did not ring a bell. If Fukushima meltdown would be to happen in Singapore, where would Singapore and Singaporeans be?

The closing down of Wuhan and several major cities in China, including Shanghai and maybe Beijing is small matter. What would happen if Singapore has to close down? Small matter, only the tourist industry be affected?

What lessons can Singapore learn from this Wuhan virus incident? Would Singapore still be happily opening up its legs wide wide and inviting everyone from all the dirty corners of the world to come here and reside and sleep and play and work with fellow Singaporeans? Not to worry, nothing bad will happen to Singapore. All the bad things can only happen in other countries, especially in China, never in Singapore. All the viruses would die after their carriers drink our shit water, oops, Newater, our cure all for everything. See, the facts have proven that Singapore is safe and clean after so many millions of potential deadly disease carriers have come and gone. No contagious disease or virus dare to attack Singapore and Singaporeans.

Can Singapore afford a slip, an unfortunate incident like the Wuhan virus or some slum virus from remote villages in some third world countries and think life will go on as usual? Anyone ever ponder what would happen if another virus or disease that spreads as easily and quickly as the Wuhan virus find its way here and Singapore has to close down?

Our health checks at our entry points have been so casual and relax, so easy to move in and out to the credit of our open leg policy. Just keep the fingers crossed and all will be well. There is nothing to worry about. It will not happen to Singapore.

What would it be like if someone with a very infectious disease travels in our very crowded trains?

    Until somebody dies from the Wuhan virus here in Singapore;
Our ivory tower PAP Millionaires will not do anything.

    Just like the PMD earlier.
The warning signs and problems of the PMDs were all there for everyone to see.
    But nothing was done.
Until a PMD rider killed an elderly woman.
Then our PAP Ministers finally took action to ban PMDs.

SARS is much deadlier than WARS. SARS mortality rate was about 14%. So far WARS is less than 3%.

And yet during the worse time during SARS, STI only dropped -14%. HK which kena SARS much worse than S'pore, only dropped -15% during the peak worse times.

Nah bei .... looks I can only ask for -10% drop at most!!!

Okieee ... the only thing in my favour .... stocks in Jan 2020 are at much higher valuations than in Jan 2003. So hoping for more severe drop!

  20. Just take a closer look at all the facts and figures:

    Figures:

"Figures from Flight Master (a travel platform popular in China), showed the following data from 30 Dec 2019 to 22 Jan 2020:

    1. Wuhan to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport - more than 11,000

    2. Wuhan to the Don Mueang International Airport - more than 9,000.

    3. Wuhan to Singapore Changi Airport - more than 10,680.

    4. Wuhan to Narita International Airport in Tokyo more than 9,080.

    5. Wuhan to Hong Kong - more than 7,000.

In addition, at least 7 million Chinese tourists are travelling all over the world during the Lunar New Year holiday season, some of whom may be healthy, wealthy and stealthy agents for the Wuhan Virus."

    Facts:

    1. The virus cannot be contained within Wuhan. 5 million people, out of 11 million population of Wuhan, i.e. almost half of the population, have left the city and moved to other provinces of China.

    2. The virus cannot be contained within Hubei. 30 out of 32 provinces of China have already been infected.

    3. The virus has spread to many other countries of the world. Some countries' governments chose to keep quiet, for reasons best known to them.

    4. Those 5 million people from Wuhan, who have escaped the lock-down, have already spread out in large numbers to many Asian and South East Asian countries by the thousands.

Over the last 25 days, Singapore alone has received at least 10,680 of the Wuhan people, excluding those from other parts of China.

Now, draw your own implications and conclusions.

What is the Singapore government going to do?

    What can you do?

In 2019 the estimated number of deaths due to influenza is estimated to be between 99,000 and 200,000... And the world's media didn't even think it was "newsworthy".

The Wuhan coronavirus is probably more aggressive, but our species lives day to day with strains of mutating influenza viruses which kill many more people every year.

  29. The Wuhan Pneumonia Virus As On 29 Jan 2020

    China's National Health Commission reports:

Deaths = rises from 81 to 132, in two days.

Confirmed cases = rises by another 840 in two days, to 5,974.

Suspected cases under monitoring = more than 9,000.

The fears of the spreading virus has led airlines to reduce flights to China and global companies to restrict employee travel to the country.

The Hubei province health authority said in a statement early on Wednesday that a further 25 people had died as of end-Tuesday.

With the latest figures, the total number of confirmed cases in China surpasses that of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) Epidemic in 2003, which infected 5,327 people in China (and over 8,000 people worldwide).

Confirmations of person-to-person transmission in Germany, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, UAE and Vietnam have made world leaders more concerned.

In Germany, four people from the same company were infected in one of the first cases of person-to-person transmission outside China.

A whole family in the United Arab Emirates, arriving from Wuhan, has been diagnosed as a confirmed case of person-to-person transmission, the UAE health ministry said on Wednesday.

However, one good news is that, so far, none of the confirmed deaths to date have happened outside China.

Known as "2019-nCoV", the Wuhan coronavirus can cause pneumonia and, like other respiratory infections, it spreads between people in tiny droplets in the air, from coughs and sneezes or direct physical contacts, such as kissing and touching.

It is too early to know what its death rate will be, since there are likely to be many cases going undetected or unreported.

"The virus is a devil and we cannot let the devil hide," state television quoted Chinese President Xi Jinping as saying during a meeting with World Health Organisation (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in Beijing on Tuesday.

"China will strengthen international co-operation and welcomes the WHO participation in virus prevention... China is confident of winning the battle against the virus."

China's assurances failed to calm investors, however, and health authorities around the world continued to step up efforts to stop the virus from spreading on their shores.

The United States said it was expanding screening of arrivals from China from five to 20 airports and would consider imposing further travel curbs.

From France to Japan, governments are organising evacuations of their citizens from Wuhan, and Hong Kong has suspended rail and ferry links with mainland China.

While Hongkong has claimed that vaccine for the Wuhan corona-virus has been successfully developed, Australia has also successfully replicated the coronavirus, in what scientists said would be a "game changer" in the fight against the deadly epidemic.

The virus could reach its peak in around 10 days at the earliest and 15 says at the latest, a top Chinese government expert said on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a drug store in Beijing will be fined three million yuan (S$590,000) for hiking the price of face masks by almost six times the online price, the Beijing municipal market regulator said on Wednesday

  30. This afternoon @ about 2:30 pm, I went to Yishun Polyclinic with the intention of seeing the doctor for my severe cough, sore throat and running nose, with lethargy. I usually go to the Polyclinic at around this time because the crowd would have been much less.

However, I was shocked to see such a long queue (at least 30 people, many of whom look like China Chinese) in two separate lines - one line queuing at the lifts to go upstairs; another line at the administration counter to get queue numbers and check temperature. Inside the Polyclinic at ground level, it was very crowded still.

The doctors and nurses must be working over time for the last few days? Usually by this time, they would be seeing only the last few patients, as the last admission would be at 3 p.m. and closing time at 4 pm.

So, instead of joining the queue, I decided to go and see a private doctor, costing me $88.90, instead of free (at the Polyclinic). Even the private clinics are crowded but not as bad as at the Polyclinic.

From this observation, I begin to think of the situations at other Polyclinics and Hospitals. Are they too as crowded? Most likely, either because of the 3 days public holidays or because of Kiasu and Kiasi Sinkies mentality?

  33. Timeline of S’pore’s first week with the Wuhan virus

    Jan 23: One case
The first case of the Wuhan virus was confirmed on Jan 23, 2020. According to the MOH, the man from Wuhan arrived in Singapore with nine others. One of the nine was his son.

The 66-year-old man stayed at Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort.

Two days later on Jan. 22, he went to SGH and was isolated immediately after being diagnosed with pneumonia.

The eight other cases had at that point in time left Singapore. They were soon isolated at a hotel in Johor Bahru by Malaysian authorities.

    Jan 24: Two cases
One of them was a 37-year-old male Chinese national, the son of the first confirmed case. he is also at Singapore General Hospital.

The other case was unrelated to the first two individuals, although all three were from Wuhan.

She was a 53-year-old lady who arrived on Scoot flight TR121 from Wuhan on Jan 21 with one travelling companion.

She stayed at J8 Hotel, and visited public places like Orchard area, MBS, and Gardens by the Bay.

    Jan 25: One case
On Jan 26 at around 12:20am, MOH confirmed the fourth case of the Wuhan virus.

The fourth confirmed case is a 36-year-old male Chinese national from Wuhan who arrived in Singapore with his family on Jan 22.

The man was asymptomatic during the flight to Singapore but subsequently developed a cough on Jan 23.

He was presented at SKH Emergency on Jan 24 and was immediately isolated.

Subsequent test results confirmed the Wuhan virus infection at about 9:30pm on Jan. 25.

    Jan. 27: Three cases
The 56-year-old lady arrived in Singapore with her family on Jan 18 and was isolated at the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID).

MOH said that the Chinese national was asymptomatic during her flight to Singapore, but later developed symptoms on Jan 24.

She was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital on Jan 26 and was classified as a suspect case.

The 56-year-old and her family had been staying at Ceylon Road prior to visiting TTSH.

She was subsequently isolated in NCID and test results on Jan. 27 at 2pm confirmed that she was the fifth case.

MOH confirmed the 6th case of the Wuhan coronavirus infection at 11pm on Jan. 27, 2020.

He is a 56-year-old man who arrived in Singapore from Wuhan on Jan 19.

He was reported to be have no symptoms during the flight to Singapore. He developed a cough on Jan 25 and self-presented at Changi General Hospital on Jan.26.

He was staying with his family at their Pasir Ris Grove home.

The seventh case arrived in Singapore with his family and friends on Jan 23 and stayed at Marina Bay Sands.

The 35-year-old man subsequently developed symptoms on Jan 24 and went to the Raffles Hospital and transferred to the NCID by ambulance on the same day.

He tested positive for the Wuhan virus at 11pm on Jan 27.

    January 28: One case
The eight case is a 56-year-old female who lives in Lorong Liew Lian, Upper Serangoon.

She arrived from Wuhan on Jan 19, along with her husband, but shown no symptoms of the virus upon arrival.

However on Jan 24, she developed symptoms, and on Jan 27 took a taxi with her husband to TTSH.

Test results on Jan 28 at about 11pm confirmed her case.

    Jan. 29: Two cases
The previous lady’s husband was confirmed to have Wuhan virus a day later on Jan 29, at about 2pm.

They are both currently warded in isolation rooms at the NCID.

The 10th confirmed case is also a Wuhan national, a 56-year-old male who arrived in Singapore from Wuhan on Jan 20. He is currently warded in an isolation room at NCID.

Like the others, he too had no symptoms during screeing at the airport but developed symptoms the next day. He was eventually identified as a suspect case at a health screening station at Marina South Pier.

Test results on Jan 29 at 2pm confirmed he had Wuhan virus infection.

  34. Hotel staff, tour guides, tour bus drivers, taxi drivers, healthcare professionals, MRT and bus commuters, public toilet cleaners, visitors and shoppers at crowded tourist spots and family members of infected persons are at risk of being infected by the Wuhan virus. Wonder how many of these have already been infected but escaped detection or displayed no symptoms at all?

Nevertheless, there is no cause for alarm because the death toll is only about 2% of total confirmed cases. Chances are most of the infected people will recover and not lead to death.
