What an EP was supposed to be

Anyone can recall the original ideals of what an elected Presidency was supposed to be? There was a time when there was a fear that an elected govt could turn rogue. So a second key in the form of an elected president was conceived to check on the elected govt. Please register this word ‘elected’ into your brain, hard wired it as it is the crux of the whole elected presidency. The elected president must be elected to have the mandate from the people to check on an elected govt. Simple to understand? A non elected president, one that is not elected, does not have the moral and legal authority to check on an elected govt.

The reason is simple and logical. How can a president that is not elected, does not have the mandate from the people going to check on an elected govt? The elected govt will show the president the middle finger. Who do you think you are? Where is your authority? Who gives you the authority when one is just appointed by political convenience to be the president? See, an elected president is the key to what an EP is all about. If a president is not elected, on what ground could he check on the elected govt?

So the EP schemed was born and an election is mandatory, even if against a non interested candidate in the first EP election. The people must cast their votes to give the president the authority and mandate, even if it is 35%, it is better than none. Some may question whether a 35% EP has more mandate than a publicly elected govt with more than 60% or more popular votes. See the slippery part about this thing called elected and mandate of the people?

We have seen two walkovers in electing an EP. Both Nathan and Halimah were not elected by the people. So got mandate over an elected govt?
Things get more fuzzy and slippery when an EP, elected by the people, with the mandate of the people, can be overruled by a Presidential Advisory Committee made up of appointees that were not elected by the people. What mandate or authority does a bunch of appointees, unelected, over an elected President, elected by the people? You tell me lah? Gila or not?

And the latest Malay President that is technically and legally not a Malay, at best half a Malay, is the elected President. Oops, not elected, because it is a walkover. Got mandate or not? What happened to this crucial mandate that was necessary to have the authority over an elected govt? Never mind? Not important anymore? Walkover also can as long as he/she is the EP. Never mind for he/she can be overruled by a non elected PAC.

What is happening? Is this the EP that was originally designed, to have the mandate of the people to exercise a veto right to checkmate an elected govt? Does a walkover EP have the moral authority over an elected govt? Or this is no longer important anymore since the EP, even if elected, can be checkmated by a non elect PAC?

What happened to the word, ‘elected’ and mandate of the people? Walkover also means got people’s mandate, elected by the people?

What do you think?

  1. The whole idea of an elected President was supposed to be that he will have power over the reserves. That was the whole plot in the first place to fool the daft.

But when Ong Teng Cheong was elected and he wanted to exercise this power, they knew they had opened the Pandora Box when he asked the question of how much was our reserves. Now, that is an important question, because the reserves were very, very secretive and whether there is that much or anything left is not to be revealed, at any cost. And so they panicked.

First they told him that it will take 50 man years to calculate. But that was a lame excuse that never hold water in the eyes and minds of even daft Sinkies. When they asked WP to furnished information, answers had to be quick or they will go to court.

So, Ong Teng Cheong had to go, by hook or by crook.

After him, they make sure that the following PEs do not ask this question and just sit there supposedly guarding the reserves that, they and we, do not know how much. How ludicrous is that, guarding something that is unknown and not knowing whether it existed. Like guarding a non-existent prisoner that you cannot see and they tell you is in the cell.

And so, after him, they make very sure that the following PEs do not ask this question again. So Prataman and KFC Tan came into the picture. But this charade cannot carry on.

Now Tan Cheng Bock wanted in, and almost got in, but he is deemed a great risk and so they formulated this idea of preventing him from contesting for the PE, by hook or by crook.

And they made a mess of it, firstly making the mistake of telling us that Wee Kim Wee was the first elected President when all Singaporeans, and the whole wide world, knows that this is not true. Secondly, they made the mistake of telling us that it was the AGC that said this and they followed, expecting all Singaporeans to believe this fairy tale. The third mistake was insisting that an Indian Muslim is the same as a Malay Muslim. thinking that no one will ever know.

  2. RB , elected mean one is open to a challenge whereas appointed mean not open to a challenge. So hali was elected though no qualified person is there to challenge her through no fault of her mah? Tio bo?

    RB

Because in GE 2015, the opposition is not united and ready to be govt,

    and yet contested 100% seats,

hence 70% feared that if the opposition is accidentally voted in as govt,

they will be even worse than PAP.

So 70% voted for PAP as the lesser of 2 evils and

in giving PAP this overwhelming mandate,

the 70% unwittingly also allowed PAP to interprete that

walkover also means got people’s mandate, elected by the people, or in fact

allowed PAP to interprete in any way PAP wants.

    So for PAP, why not?

  5. Hi Bro 9.36

Agar Agar, me just understand a bit like follows :

I am from Indonesia and I brought your Singapore 4D lottery and strike 50 million rupiah. Now back in home land and do business.

Thank you very muxhe as said by Japanese.

You want to strike also then bro you see the Tele number below.
    Have a go today.

But anyway, still cannot best Halimah lottery strike.

Rupiah 1000000000000000000000000000000 Juta that is millions.

LKY implemented the PE as the reserves earned and also collected from the daft Sinkies grew into Billions.

WP and other opposition like SDP make some inroads into Parliament and they were afraid further down the road, more Oppo candidates win and become the Ruling Government.

So, to safeguard, they wanted to still have their people on top to control the Treasury.

Little does he know that there is no need to as the Sinkies became more and more daft each erections.

The Powers of the Elected PRESIDENT is enormous as he plans to be if the PAP loses future erections.

But he found that the Sword has two sharp edges and can cut both parties.

So the Holy Son got to manipulate now to have the Sword cut them.

  7. PAP knows how to win elections to get power and to maintain their power, or even strengthen their power further after having got power.

And PAP succeeds, and for so long, because of 2 things.

    1. PAP understand majority Sinkies very well. They know that majority Sinkies will never vote for political parties which are not ready to be govt.

    2. And due to knowing #1, PAP make sure that the political parties of their opponents will never be ready to be govt. And PAP had been doing this since LKY's time, and this continue under his son Hsien Loong.

PAP sued Chee Soon Juan till bankrupt, sued WP Hia and his 2 other MPs for other reasons for a whopping $33M (lagi worse than what Chee kena), and make Tan Cheng Bock lose lose lose all the way trying to fight to be EP.

So like that how can PAP's opponents ever be ready to be govt, or even to win more seats?

And if they are not ready, and due to #1 above, how can PAP be voted out and lose power?

  8. The reserves were semi-secret. With a bit of research you can get the numbers: Temasek $275bln, MAS $353bln (see tbeir official websites) and GIC about $470bln as estimated by analysts. What LKY & latter "kingmakers" don't want is true transparency & accountability. The results if were made in plain language will show that they maybe incompetent & lousy fund managers. Eg in 2015/16 in midst of a global bull market Temasek lost 10s of billions. Likewise in 2016/17 GIC lost big, but tried to hide by using 20 yr moving average return. Another other fund managers with this kind of results and poor transparency would have been sacked or funds redeemed by investors. The core strategic fundamental error of Singapore since 1990 is that PAP politicians are grossly overpaid in a totally non competitive political environment. Without any effective competition and a huge very effective propaganda mass media machinery on its citizens, coupled with ridiculous financial rewards our politicians are definitely not sharp nor strategic but have become yes-men to one man & his wife. That 2 brains even how smart cannot compete effectively in a highly competitive world. The recent PE screw-up and siblings "dishonourable son" expose are clear signs of the glaring weak & non competitive political environment. Too much money can make a dull fat herd out of smart scholars given sufficient time. Time always show forth the fruits of policies. The million dollars salary policy for our politicians is a root to Singapore structurally decline. PE ridiculous mess is just a mere symptom. Much more are to come. Time will tell.

  9. Incompetent, resorting to building casinos and bringing in 2 million foreign workers to sustain economic growth while displacing local workers culminating to big drop in living standards, then keep changing the rules to remain in power - if u cannot guess who this is, then u are very very very stupid !

  10. We have the most convoluted system of electing a President.

On hindsight, I think they made a mess of things by attempting to empower the PE to make sure they have total control, found to their horror the possibility of the skeletons in their cupboard falling out when OTC did the unthinkable, tried to fix the problem by putting their chosen puppets there, but could not find peace of mind when TCB contested and almost got elected, had to do another fixing to prevent TCB from contesting by bringing race into the picture.

I am sure it will become more convoluted when more fixing is necessary when race comes into the picture.

    We shall see.

Ong Teng Cheong was a cabinet minister and a Deputy Prime Minister BEFORE he became Elected President.

    Just think.
Ong Teng Cheong as a Cabinet Minister and Deputy Prime Minister DID NOT KNOW how much money was in the reserves.
Then when Ong Teng Cheong became Elected President, he had to ask.

So if a even Cabinet Minister and a Deputy Prime Minister does not know what is in the Singapore Reserves.
    Just think.
How few people are there left who is "higher up" than a Cabinet Minister and a Deputy Prime Minister?

I think Workers' Party should ask:
"How many people in Singapore knows how much money we have in the reserves?"

    In theory and theory only.
If only 10 people in Singapore knows how much money is in the reserves and where the money is kept.
And if 9 of these 10 people were to die of "accidents" within one week of each other.

Would the 10th remaining person do the honourable thing and return all the money back to Singaporeans?

  16. Tan Cheng Bock exposes Shanmugam's Contradictory Statements on Reserved EP
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Tuesday in Parliament, Shanmugam had said in Parliament that the decision on the counting of the first elected President was made solely by the PAP Cabinet and not due to the AGC's advice.

    But guess what?

In Sept 2016, he had said the opposite during an interview with the MSM Channel News Asia.

This is what he had said as pointed out by Tan Cheng Bock:

    ReplyDelete
  30. Oh ya, after this our leaders should organise a congregation in Parliament to pray, with the usual chanting of mantras and singing of hymns.

There will not be a commission of inquiry though, because flooding was an act of God, so no fault of theirs. You cannot question God, so what to do?

Praying is the only solution for floods. I think the whole of Singapore and Singaporeans of all races and religion beliefs should also pray with our leaders. At least I know 70% should and must do just that. Voting for PAP is just like their religious belief, so it is their responsibility.
