NTU to remove Chinese words in foodcourt signages

Below is a post in All Singapore Stuff on the removal of Chinese signages in NTU.
‘Food stall vendors in the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) are complaining about a new management regulation that is trying to force them to remove Chinese wordings on their signboards.
According to Chinese newspapers, the food court, North Spine Food Court, is managed by Select Group.

Vendors told reporters that they had received instructions from the management to remove Chinese wordings from their signboards by end August. Many stall vendors were unhappy with the change as the university has strong cultural ties with Chinese students.

However, many vendors said that they would comply with the instructions as they did not want to strain relations wit the management.’

What? NTU does not allow Chinese words in its premises? What is NTU? Nanyang Technological University!  What was it before? Nantah or Nanyang University, a Chinese university built by the Chinese community to provide Chinese education to their children. To think that Chinese words cannot be put up in the foodcourt except English is outrageous. What is happening? Who decided on this ruling? Does the person know the history of Nantah? Who is this person? A Singaporean or a foreigner?

The same matter has been reported in the Straits Times and a Professor Kwok Kian Woon, the Associate Provost has come out to explain that this was a misunderstanding. A misunderstanding or not wanting to understand? He said, ‘NTU would like to assure everyone that Chinese can be used in the signage in its foodcourts, as long as the same information is also displayed in English for the benefit of non Chinese.’ What is this nonsense? Is there anywhere in Singapore where one has to put up a Chinese signage, the condition is that it must also be accompanied by English or else not allowed? When is this ruling implemented in Singapore, in NTU? Who set this ruling?

Chinese is an official language in Singapore. Why should there be restriction or condition for its use? ‘The issue was not limited to the foodcourt. Chinese daily Lianhe Zaobao reported yesterday that Prime supermarket, at North Spine Plaza, was told by NTU it could not have Chinese promotional signs displayed inside the supermarket. The foodcourt is located in the plaza.’ Is this also another misunderstanding? How can such a serious and unacceptable ruling be made without anyone in NTU objecting to it? How can this be a misunderstanding?

What is happening to NTU? What is happening to Singapore? Tan Siah Kwee, President of the Chinese Calligraphy Society of Singapore said, also reported in the Straits Times, ‘that removing signs that had Chinese words on them “would not be acceptable at all”.’ Now, what would the Chinese Chamber of Commerce got to say about this? What would the Chinese Clans say about this? What have the Ministers of Education got to say about this? What has the Prime Minister got to say about this? Is having Chinese signage unconstitutional?

I suggest a Ministerial Committee be set up to find out why was this thing happening in NTU. Is it a misunderstanding? If not, the culprit must be made to answer for it. What is wrong with having Chinese signages in a university which has its roots in Chinese education? What is wrong with having Chinese signages in Singapore? Too many foreigners in charge?

Are we back to the Suharto era in Indonesia? My God, I almost faint reading this news. I feel so violated! This is Singapore isn't it, where Chinese is an official language and the language of the majority of its citizens. What has become of my country?

What would be next?

Highly educated but brain stuff with shits?Such instruction should have been carefully considered before passing down.
I am not surprise that it's likely headed by either a geh angmo, angmo or some one with bad intention who does not know about nantah history.
Or likely someone with the intention to change history for a reason known to himself.
    Our pioneer's effort are wasted.

Reminded me of a formal primary school somewhere in the east that not many are aware of...
    Nong nong time ago...
A group of more well to do
Clansmen built a school, provide land and finance it to help the children of the poor....
These bortartcheh towkays entrusted the property to someone, who happen to be a bit educated but not from the same clan,to be principal or administrator.
In the end the school and land, worth millions today, were transferred unknowing by this principal to his own clan.
Moral of story.Get a local with sense of belonging from the same background instead of getting any Arthur Ah kow to run such institution.
Believe there are many talents who graduated Ntu can do a better job..Or are we saying ntu got no talent or they are taught to be ungrateful?

Thought you always sang and praised the Papies for what's Goblaosation?? You never know later, they put Chinese and Dogs now allowed in NTU.

The Chancellor can be s white or neh.

At one time with the influx of many PRC PRs in sinkieland, they wanted to put up chinese language sign boards in MRT stations to let the PRCs know when to disembark.

Others also demanded that they also put up the same. Especially in Little India. See Sinkieland gonna be dark and gloomy soon as many became boh lean chor and been brainwashed to be Dalits in own country.

Better stay in Matland with better conditions of living even as minorities rather than here as outcasts been in the majority.

The later part to claim that one can use Chinese wording provided it comes with English words is just a no brainer argument,
      probably running out of idea
      on how to defend oneself.
These no brainers are just bookworm, never eat at food court ,maybe good in study but they know nothing about running a food business and yet want to impose rules to teach others how to run a business, bullying our local entrepreneurs.
Patron, whether Chinese educated or not,are educated adults and can tell what to order even if they dun read Chinese wirds.
Simply let those stalls to display 抄粿條,kwayteow goreng,or in Indian wording for fried kwayteow if they want.Is the word fried noodle necessary?
I dun see the necessity to impose such regulation for contract renewal.
Only make me think one is up to no good.

We especially welcome agongkia post on this issue and agreed with him. We would like to invite agongkia to our Kuda riding session. Whoever he is, he has a hidden agenda to stir shit and trouble in Singapore. This evil culprit must be called up by the authority and exposed. If he is a Singaporean which I believe is not likely he must be fined and imprisoned for at least ten years. If he is a foreigner or fake foreign talent he must be declared a personal non grata and be fined not less than a million dollars and thrown in prison for twenty years and thereafter deported for good. If the culprit is a caucasion from America or Europe he may have insidious motive of trying to deculturalise Asian tradition and culture to break down the Asian spirit and thereafter to plant the seeds of instability and trouble among the different Asian races in Singapore and perhaps in the whole of South East Asia.

Why the National Archives was no Friend of the Court
    -------------------------------------------------------
Earlier last year, we commented on the case of Lee Wei Ling and Lee Hsien Yang vs Attorney-General that due to their specialist knowledge and unique mandates, the National Archives of Singapore, its fellow SARBICA member associations, or even the International Council of Archives should have submitted an amicae curiae brief to the court if they were not approached by either side to testify.

We argued that a community of archival experts could have provided their perspective on how archival institutions are mandated, given authority and institutional independence, and governed via a clear set of legal frameworks and strict operational and ethical guidelines to handle "secrets", "copyright", and "ownership".

At that time, we were confident that had the NAS or its fellow international archival bodies raised their voices on archival procedure and copyright, the case could've been settled differently, and we were perplexed on their no-show. That is, until today.

Are the Heritage Board and National Archives fatally compromised?

  25. Whoever that has have mooted and tried to undermine the Use of one of the Official Language namely: the Chinese Language should be charged for playing up
Racial Discrimination. Be it any other languages are involve, the Culprit(s) is racist beyond doubt.

NTU was former Nantah, the First and Chinese Language Tertiary Institution sponsored privately by successful Chinese Businessmen led by Tan Lark Sye.

Nantah was made defunct by the First Prime Minister of Sin, the Late Lee Kuan Yew, who also banned all Vernacular Schools allowing only the Madrashah.

There were many reasons been speculated for the Closure of Nantah and the Main and Controversial Ones remain that the English Language is more able to make Sin progresses internationally.
Detractors, however content that Nantah was suspected to be a breeding ground for left leaning activism which was constantly at loggerhead with the Regime. To date and maybe for many generations to come, this suspicion that Nantah was nullified for political reason will last for a long time in the History Of Sin.

Anyway, the Fact that as Singaporeans, especially those of Chinese Origin, we CANNOT HELP FEELING badly hurt by this NONSENSICAL REQUIREMENT AND RULING THAT THE OFFICIAL CHINESE LANGUAGE CANNOT BE USED IN SIGNAGES.
    WHAT WILL NEXT?
Removal of all roads and streets bearing Chinese Names?

How Sin is getting awry with the Many Recent Events does not augur well for the Wellbeing of the Country.

The Leaders have to be very mindful of recent unsavoury events happening after one another. They cannot be too complacent and neglect issues affecting the Sentiment of the Citizens.

Chinese can learn English and Chinese, not tamil or tagalog.
Singapore is almost broke, looking at the "investments" one go can lose USD3 billions. How many investments are not able to turn back into original cash capital?
It will not increase NS pay. In next 50 years can they still pay S$500pm as "duties" to young citizens? There will be no defence as majority are chinese. Let the chinese go and fill up the vacancies with other races who will support the dragon s rule.

Dont depend on opposition parties. Vote for the dragon party. Son of dragon blessed by invisible old man can live pass 100 years. Be ready to lose more billions, but secure the defense with tamil nadu soldiers and ceo from chennai managers speak takalog, the economy will still prosper.

Let the chinese go to find new hopes at young age, then no more need for chinese characters sign boards. Better do it island wide scale. First must abolish NS. Young gens love it.

We should rename NTU - Nalanda Technological University.
So that we can help George Yeo to be a Chancellor of a University named Nalanda.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nalanda_University

Surpassing the foreign government contributions, former Chancellor George Yeo’s initiative to raise funds from private Singaporeans has led to a pledge of 10 million Singapore dollars (Rs. 48.89 crore) for the library building.

On 25 November 2016, George Yeo resigned as the chancellor of Nalanda University accusing the Indian government of failing to maintain the university’s autonomy. This came following the sudden replacement of the governing board with a new one ending the long-standing associations of eminent persons like Amartya Sen with the university.

Actually, it was not "clerical error"? It was an outright lie to deceive Lee Hsien Yang and Dt. Lee Wei Ling, the Official and Legal Executors of Lee Kuan Yew's Estate.

Why I say this? Because on the date stated in April (to replace Feb 2013) Ho Ching was not in Singapore. So how can NHB received the items from Ho Ching on that date in April 2013.

Moreover, if Ho Ching was the one (as stated in the record) who handed over the items, then the one who took over the items cannot be a "clerk". It must be the Chief of NHB. (Elementary, Dr Watson!)

Thirdly, those items belonged to LEE KUAN YEW, nit any ither people. So how can the Chirf of NHB left them to be received by just a clerk? (Elementary, Dr Watson!)

  48. Hi anon 2.12

Not only the NHB telling fables, most of the main characters of this drama also telling fables

They are just looking for any loophole to justify not demolishing the House.

Using Heavy weight what's Ministers to press their case.

Just for the sake of what's heritage that important to the History of our Founding Fathers.

They just want it to remain just to remind Sinkies to be subservient forever to the PAP

Now they found the loophole of the clause as stipulated by LKY.

In the case, that due to what laws in future that the House can not be demolish, then the House should be accessible to only his descendants.

Now, Big Nisw and his kakis are trying to use this to their advantage. They will proclaimed that the House is of historical value and be under the umbrella of NHB.

What's LHY and LWL can do about it?? That's why now they have Indranee to press further.

Only LHY and LWL can do is to make sure that it is not open to public.

The main objective of the PAP is that the House remain. As an icon to remind the people to vote for them every elections.

So, they just simply pass the law that the House should be a National Heritage.

    Case closed.

Unless LHY do something drastic like what been happening in Tuas just yesterday and everywhere in the world.
