Singapore China relations – Damage control mode

The last few weeks Singapore leaders have been gloating about the good relations between China and Singapore, going back to the days of LKY and claiming all the credits for Suzhou, Tianjin eco city and telling China that we are old friends, honest and reliable, we have common interests, that our good relations have deep roots and small differences should not derail this relationship.

All the negative reports and articles about China have disappeared to a trinkle, though still one or two appearing to irritate the Chinese. There was no need for such pleadings to remind the Chinese that we used to be good friends if only our diplomacy was based on more sensible approach, knowing our place instead of being khongcum and everyday wanting to punch above our weight, to poke China in the eyes. Oops, no we did not do that, according to Tommy Koh and several other highly talented Singaporean diplomats. Even Vivian has been saying all the nice things about how honest we are in our dealings with China and the South China Sea dispute. No, we never do anything bad or harmful against China. And the Chinese are so stupid, thinking Singapore was anti China!

See, relationship with China is now on even keel, back to normal. Everyone is smiling now. Forget about the Terrex incident or the non invite to OBOR. These are normal things and would soon be blown over.

Let’s see how long we can keep the media and the politicians and diplomat’s mouths shut. Let’s see how long Singapore can restrain itself from wanting to punch above its weight and wanting to poke China in the eyes. In diplomacy, they don’t invent such words called diplomatic for nothing, everything is about being diplomatic and not about punching above one’s weight when there is no need to.

Did Singapore learn anything from the hot headed cocky approach prior to this damage control exercise with China?  George Yeo better tell his former colleagues to know their places and stop being ‘boh tua boh suay’ in the international arena. The rule of the game is different, oops, in a way the same as domestic politics except that the person holding the big stick is not Singapore, so be prepared to be clobbered if one steps out of line

The horse has bolted from the barn, is it a bit too late to close the gate? Oops, more military exercises in the South China Sea, this time anti submarine exercise with India.

Is this a friendly or unfriendly act against China? Why not anti submarine exercise with China’s navy in the Indian Ocean?

  1. Alamak, sg should know that China has Long memory and do not forget thing easily. They still remember the last 100 years of humiliation. The only way the relationship can improved is when sg has a new leader and not past unpleasant baggage left but u and I know it's not going to happen at least for another 10 years. By then the Malayan port is fully developed and we are toast already.

  2. Good morning RB .. U must have been breathing more than fresh Malaysian air .. our country is already on war footing le ..except u choose to ignore it!! Look at all the BGs fronting our essential services .. from the head of government to the recent head of pang sai chua.. which other government in the world has a higher % of combat ready ppl in charge ..maybe ISIS .. al Qaeda? ..israel? You expect the military trained people to back down? No sir!! If they do.. they'll be equated to our men in blue .. I don't see us backing down.. I see an escalation .. we have friends .. US of A at our beck n call .. mother England to keep on buying stuff stuff from us .. India to supply us with cheap labour ..what me worry!! We will counter China's OBOR initiative with our NBPD (No belt pants drop) .. the Chinese will cringe in fear when they see us charging at them with no pants ( wasn't that why the kilt was invented? The Scots killed their enemies just by flapping their kilts) I daresay that the Chinese will die laughing too!!

  3. Very obvious PAP Singapore is poking China's eye - evidence: siding USA on the South China Sea issue, and carrying India's balls - evidence: CECA, offering jobs to India nationals in Singapore at expense of Sinkies; joint naval exercise with India in the South China Sea against potential enemy naval forces (which China guessed is China itself).

  4. LHL said Singaporeans had developed our own distinctive indenity. He meant to tell the Chinese Singaporeans - don't look to China.

We are not Chinese, we are more now more Ah Neh than Chinese. Don't know whether maybe they traced their family roots and find that they have Ah Neh blood.

Those Chiap Cheng from time immemorial just simply dislike Chinese. Worse traitors to their own race.

So,sinkie Chinese don't kpkb that we spite the Chinese. You have your own identity and please do not look to them as your kinsmen and saviours.

  6. This pee-sai is out of the starring roles in the China OBOR.

This pee-sai not bad, this pee-sai has their OBOR, Own Belt Own Road!

What so good about the pee-sai that China want to learn?

    Nothing! Nothing!

    China don't need this pee-sai!

Just look at Malaysia and China, hand-in-hand, smiling and smiling.

Give another 10 to 20 years, Malaysia will be the Asean HUB with the help from China!

That time........ They will shout.....Malaysia boleh!

    Will this pee-sai Boleh?

Will this pee-sai shine under the 4th generation leadership? Or fade?

    What say you?

    RB

Having weigh the pros and cons, PAP thinks it is still in Singapore's interest to have anti submarine exercise with India lah, even though it may be an unfriendly act against China.

Just as 70% Sinkies, having weigh the pros and cons, think it is still in their interest to vote for PAP, even though PAP has "jobs for foreigners and NS only for Sinkies" policy.

  8. Is this a friendly or unfriendly act against China?
    RB

That'a a wrong question to ask.

The right question should be "Is it in Singapore's interest?"

So Singapore's interest must come first.

And since many already think Singapore = PAP and vice versa, and which is also not that wrong, Singapore's interest also = PAP's interest.

And sometimes, and not always lah, PAP's interest can be very bad for Sinkie and Sinkie opposition's interest.

  9. Our powerful politicians think Singapore is the leader of ASEAN and foolishly think they are of world status comparable to Trump, Putin and Xi Jinping. Therefore they always talk the most and the loudest and like to punch above their weight. They will never shut their ugly itchy mouths. They always use third parties or underlings in the many institute of higher learnings and international studies to bad mouth China. No need to tell China Singapore is a friend and is neutral in the affairs between China and the US or Japan or in the South China Sea matter. They must be out of their mind to think China was born only yesterday or as the saying goes they think that China is a three year old child. They are full of their own self importance and inflated ego. Their uncalled for insidious utterances and actions are driving Singapore dangerously over the fatal cliff.

In what way? Can u be more specific or else my simple mind catch no ball.

Because my simple mind always think that if PAP can win elections and win big, then nothing is dangerous, let alone fatal, for Singapore.

  13. With India and Japan in Asia as friends, Singapore does not need China for anything.
    And
    with USA having military
base or the Use of military facilities here in Sin, all the More China can be put aside.

Sinkies can pick workers and talents from a pool of almost 1.5 billions from the lndian Mainland.
    Mana chiak a liao?
Zero point five percent of lndia lndian come to Sin, the Tiny Dot will boom no end.
lmagine if they cater to the lndian Mainland Market and get cheap labour from there to work in Sin.
On one hand India supplies cheap labour, on the other hand it gives Sin a super huge market, can Sin cope with them?

Work 10 years before retiring as Prime Minister.
And then ownself promote ownself to Senior Minister

And then work 10 years before retiring as Senior Minister
And then ownself promote ownself to Mentor Minister

And then work 10 years before retiring as Mentor Minister
    And then die.
Then ownself promote ownself to Founding Son & the 10th Immortal.

  20. Sometimes I wonder, why Changi Business Park and those in the Marina financial district got so many nationals from a certain country hah?

Why they are not from China, Myanmar or Philippines? Or even from Ang Mo countries?

Or lagi best, why not Sinkies from Sinkieland?

Why hah? And is the anti submarine exercise with India also got something to do with the above?

  21. PM Lee Hsien Loong said Singapore manages population growth carefully - so careful that essential water becomes short supply due to increased population demand, and he had to hike the water price by 30% (excluding GST and additional water tax on the incremental 30%) . . .

There is no basis for your MORONIC projection. U need to eat shit when it doesn't happen. H & A highly unlikely will change but E & M & many others highly possibly will ...... Ha ha ha u moron. 80% is your farting wishful wet dream & masturbation plucked from the sky. When the opposite happen, make sure u swallow 80 eggs for your foul mouth lousy moronic no basis 80% projection! That's why some people could be busy redrawing boundary to make E & M disappear from the map but that will only fall into Mr Ah Hia trap! As the saying goes, "Don't blardy count your farting piglets before they come out from the bitchy piggy CBs" .... ha ha ha

  25. What your leaders had done is for your country's interest and own good though the way it's executed may not be acceptable to some.
When you appear to be botuabosuay to your elder brother, naturally he got to show colour to let you know your status and as a junior, just kwaikwai n be humble.
A matter of time that your big brother will forget any unhappiness.
Big brother is known to be magnanimous. He will still support you
so meantime do not fall into any trap and got yourself involve with those up to no good so call street brothers like "cobra or whatever".
Most important now is to be more friendly to our immediate good neighbours.
Chinese use to say ,far away relatives cannot compare with nearby neighbours.
    遠親不如近鄰。
    So,let's move on.
