Water hike protest at Hong Lim

Last Saturday’s protest at Hong Lim was reported in the Straits Times not because of the protest but because Reuters gave the wrong and misleading reason for the poor turnout. Reuters said it was fear that kept people from attending the protest. The SPF objected to the argument of Reuters, claiming that it was misleading and untrue.

I think there could be some element of truth in Reuters’ point but how much was due to fear is debatable. Who is able to quantify this data? What I think could be one of the major reasons for the pathetic turnout of 100 was the lack of publicity on the event. How many people really know of the protest to even want to attend the event if they did not even know of it?

What I think organizers of future events at Hong Lim should take note of is to at least create more publicity and awareness of such protests. Don’t expect people to know if very little is said of it. Even poor Donald Trump must go down to twitting to get his message to as many people as possible. Organisers must know that they are not Donald Trump and only need to hold an event and expect everyone to know and to want to attend.

Organising an event with little or no publicity, with little or no notice, is as good as not organizing it at all. When failure or poor turnout is assured, what is the point? Are the organizers trying to prove that Singaporeans are not interested in such protests and let the attendance speaks for itself? What kind of impression are the organizers going to create with a 100 attendance?

My advice, do it properly, seriously, and no effort should be spared to inform the public of the event. Make use of all the options like social media, twitter, youtube, google, facebooks etc etc to get the message across. It must be quite disheartening for the speakers and those attending the event last Saturday to see the handful of attendance.

Want to hold more protest at Hong Lim again?

  2. Probably the organizers r being warned by the authority with something like " NO Publicity OR ElSE U GOTO JAIL"...remember a time when RN, TSL activists their homes were rampage, Mobil devices & laptops confiscated & intense interrogation by the blue men in cold room etc...Reuters is not wrong to say that the people feared being charged in court..

  3. Even if got full-page advertisements in all the newspapers & 5-min TV adverts on prime time slots, also will have pathetic turnout. Sinkies are pragmatic & self-centered --- where's the money?!?!? Why waste time?!?!? Better you buy war stocks like me & shake leg at home collecting fat profits.

  6. RB,

I agree with Reuter because I myself and some of my friends are afraid to go there. Since the last incident when Han Hui Hui was arrested and charged and fined $3100, I concluded that there is madness in the political leadership of Singapore. That is why I started to write about this in your blog.

The Police has the authority and power to do whatever they like. A matter of fear is inside the heart and mind of citizens. No one can accurately say whether Reuter is right or wrong, until they interview those who are really afraid to go there. The fear may be due to various reasons, according to different people; but I believe the fear is there to a certain degree.

My fear is that there are too many unseen, hidden cameras and plain-clothes agents from the authorities hanging around whenever there is a protest or a talk given against the government's actions. Plus the draconian handling of some of the protests and protesters is so glaring for everyone to see - to me, is actually the sending of a strong signal to the public, those who would want to be involved, to refrain from doing so.

Han Hui Hui's and Roy Ngerng's are cases in point.

If protests do not work, the people, citizens must find other ways to voice their unhappiness.

    RB

Even do it properly, seriously also won't help lah.

Simply because Sinkies jolly well know that protests or not, turnout big or not, is of no use as PAP will still go ahead with the water price increase.

So like that ah, protest for what? Sinkies not happy, so what? PAP voted out? Tan ku ku lah.

  8. "reported in the Straits Times not because of the protest but because Reuters gave the wrong and misleading reason for the poor turnout. Reuters said it was fear that kept people from attending the protest."

Reuters reported for their own audience. The report is like those reporting on war at aleppo or mosul. I dont trust what they wrote. I guess world wide users of information knew western agencies reporting their very own guided news benefiting their owners or own politicians at home.

On the other hand, the protest organizer Gillbird had also instilled fear among audience or teaching the foreign reporters there was fear in them. Once he said he worried he might be arrested on the rally protesting nothing, it was a May 1st rally if i was not wrong.

I lost interest after the hhh and ng did an ugly scene at hlp. I happened to see the cross loudspeakers between hhh ng group and children dancing on stage, while eager children s parent watch the stage and some parents were blocked by the hhh ng protest group. There were lots of cameras. No uniform group shooting, sure or not?

I told myself, never come to such events again, it was against my principle: protest must not disturb the innocent public s peace.

So hlp has 100 people having their own event protesting water taxes increase is so peaceful all to themselves. That is the right way to go. People has interest should keep in touch with the organizers.

Singaporeans are not supporting taxes increase protests. The welcome more taxes increases. I hope the pap take the messages clearly and increase more taxes. Areas like transport, electricity, property taxes, are strategic to the survival of Singapore. Every 4 months must have increases in taxes in all these areas. That will boost gdp, if not, can still increase civil servants pay packets.

Pap is not shutting hlp for good, not need to have fear. Look at the support for gay and lesbian life style, Pap allows the gathering to grow among the young. I heard there are lots of goodies for joining the party. But i am not gay. I find poking the ass hole is not clean. Not to the authorities. Its ok and its right to be pink.

So HLP actually is a gay or lesbian area. I told my kids not to set steps onto it. Where can protest find big group??? Even there are publicity and materials, few will want to be gay or mistaken to be gay to be at that gay park. Btw, HLP used to be a gay park when it was planted with lots of small plants. Go ask people living at chinatown to confirm what i said.

Despite that incident and your conclusion of madness in the political leadership of Singapore, 70% still voted for PAP on 11 Sep 2015, tio bo?

So why 70% voted for mad PAP? Or is it the 70% are also mad? Or something wrong with your conclusion? Or Sinkies now think it is madness to be seen attending Hong Lim Park protest?

  27. "From the look of things, PAP is going to be the exception of all history. It is going to be the only political party that would rule till eternity."

This is not the reality. Opposition is having greater chance than the past. Voters are more willing to listen to what opposition gonna offer to voters. Reason probably: Pap has been making mistakes. The biggest is using foreigners to replace citizens. It is still going on.

Matter of time when, Pap lose its last vote as majority and cross to the <50% side. Not too long i believe.

On opposition side. I remember went to Hg to attend WP first night rally, the crowd was huge, never seen before. The crowd went all the way to the edge of the grass field near the mrt station. But i was disappointed as i was at the edge and there was no speakers there to listen to the speeches. I went back cursing WP. It reminded me, all over the island, opposition supporters were more proactive and willing to show their support to WP.

But WP is disappointing or lacking resources to field more. To WP s expectation, they did not even win the Eastcoast grc, and almost lose the current grc.

What does that mean? Opposition needs to stay on, get in more good candidates like Lim Tien for example. Old opposition who cannot win even in bye election should bye bye. Let someone else to build on the party.

Opposition cannot build on strength but keep shooting at Pap for keeping the seats is not real opposition. May such opposition is helping Pap to stay on, as such opposition is sure lose opposition. Pap will love them like chocolate sweet.

The crowd s thinking is swinging. When Pap keep making policies to hurt voters pockets, opposition must also build on strength. Sure lose politicians must give up seat first so that new people can gain footholds to build up the party. If not this way, how can opposition win by keeping putting up the sure lose faces as candidates? These faces are forcing voters to pick pap again and again.

One of the justifications for the 30% price increase for the essential basic live-supporting item, water, is that there has been no increase in water price for 17 years.

What they conveniently left out is to highlight that the
price of water was only $0.53 per cu m in 1990.

What does it mean if the water price in 1990 was only $0.53 per cubic meter?

The price of water is now $2.25 ($2.10 + 7% GST).

The price of water will be $2.93 ($2.74 + 7% GST) after the 30 per cent increase from 1 July 2017/18.

Therefore, it means that the price of water will be increased by 396% in real terms from 1990 to 2017/18!

  41. After this Tit for Tat merry too and fro ing, a speech by Ms Irene Mortensons in YouTube at HL brought me back to a past conversation with a water purification engineer while together waiting for our turns at a bone setter clinic.

He was commenting of how his patented discovery of a purifying machine been usurped by a GLC in a tender where they hold an advantage and the client been arm twisted to award the project to the GLC in requesting them to relinquish their discovery to them.

Besides, he told me to get a water distiller to distill the water before drinking. It's for our health sake.

This Lady mentioned about our drinking water with fluoride. It's a health hazard drinking them in the long term. Joking ge told me. Why the PAP wins every elections?

Because you people been numbed by their water.

Why is that nobody brought up this matter??

The Health promotion board prompting all to have healthy meals and check ups for sickness and yet nobody seemed to care of this health hazard in our daily use of the water.

Is it really ploy to numb our brains??

    WOW! Spectacular.

You need to leave the adult's table and go sit with the children if this is your rebuttal. ;-)

...and wheb your mom walks by, ask her to expose her breast so you can suck on her tetek. That might change your mood, and her milk might even nourish your brain.

    @ AhKong:

Please feel free to call me anything you like lah. Will not change the facts. Will not also change your genes. Sorry lah....You're STUCK! ;-)
