The Statestimes Review also said, ‘Due to insufficient CPF retirement fund, Singaporean elderly are turning to crimes to get free lodging and food from the prison. According to state media Straits Times, the number of elderly prisoners above the age of 60 have doubled in the past 5 years from 359 at 2.8% of the prison population in 2012, to 651, or 5.3%,in 2016.’
With no jobs, no money, little CPF savings, Medisave as good as untouchable for minor illnesses that did not incur more than a few thousand dollars, the senior citizens are just following the trend of developed western countries like the USA, commit minor crimes to get free lodging, free food and free medical from the prison institutions.
The Singapore Prison is quite forward thinking, thinking ahead, planning ahead to cater for this new trend. Unfortunately 25 cells may not be enough given the size of the senior citizen population now about 1m and growing. The Prison authority should be more generous in the expansion of facilities for the seniors that are planning to make the prison their permanent home. A couple of blocks of HDB flats may be the solution and may shall be inadequate in view of the rising demand.
Senior citizens are getting innovative and creative in planning for their retirement, in the comfort of Changi Prison, everything taken care of. And the facilities have been upgraded to make sure they did not slip and fall. Comforting thought.

ReplyDeleteHi Redbean, speed here. So sorry to hear that more seniors in Singapore are resorting to crime. I am a very senior and I do feel for those who are in prison and those who will be imprisoned. Coping with prison life at our age must be very traumatic. I AM sorry.

..huh?...me tot these seniors citizens r able to get Long Ge's Silver Bonus $$, or they never qualify at all or consider outcast..as wat 1 swim king mum said few week ago ..to get garmen grant or subsidy got to "..Tan Ku Ku...", these seniors r so desperate so even resort to stealing to go to jail, those a bit oked one "rented out" their house & stay in the airport by nite & live in library by day, some unlucky one rented out their flat but couldn't get it back ...a hotel Sinkieland now is bankrupt of ideas & sinking fast..

Long time ago lah, when Sinkieland was poor and so was prison food.
The "ow tau" is also the dish and only dish and served inside the png as one meal.
Actually "ow tau" fried with chilli and salt is quite tasty and nutritious.

I saw those foreign workers eat their rice (a lot of it to give them energy) with curry gravy only. Not say meat, not even vegetables! So sad.

Including foreigners who are PRs, there will be at least 2 million seniors. If only 10% go to prison, either self-elected or forced to, because the failed to pay up their compulsory life-long stranglehold medishield life premiums, the number of extra cells required will be 200,000 conservatively.

Workers eats so little vege and meat but a lot of rice is because of exploitation by their middle men hr agent. They paid both native country agents and sg agents who team up with the native agents lots of money up front, as much as $10k. These agents take the money to enjoy ktv and screw women. Malaysian Guards are much cheaper and so are the Expenses for the Utilities and Amenities.
The Elderly Prisoners can be made to do primary productions for the Food and Other Needs for themselves.
Homeless senior citizens indeed should find ways to get free food, shelter and medicare by getting themselves into jail.
There is no better option as job is not available and costs of living are beyond most Sinkies.

They are needed to carry the elderly to/from beds to wheelchairs, and to help bath them in the mornings, and also to carry them to/from commodes & toilets. It's like nursing home liao.

It is not what's wrong but rather less wrong, or the lesser evil.
Because for obvious reasons, it is more wrong to support opposition, given the state they are in during GE 2015 and even now.
No opposition leader has announced that his/her party is ready to be govt, so this alone is reason enough not to support them, or so the 70% thought.
So either the opposition is ready to be govt, or 70% need to be convinced that it is OK to vote for a opposition which is not ready to be govt. Which is easier?

It is because the SPF and judicial system is so on-the-bola they have managed to capture, prosecute and incarcerate all the dangerous career criminals, who obviously have had lives in crime, given their ADVANCED AGES when apprehended.
Can you imagine all these apeks hobbling around, terrorizing citizens with knives and firearms? Lucky Shanmugam and the 'Home Team' have brought these dangerous people to justice, and ensured the security and peace of Singapore.
