52% support budget, 32% support water hike

According to Reach, 52% of the people support the budget but only 32% support the 30% water hike. Put it in another way, 43% was against the water hike, 24% neutral, 32% for and 1% dunno.  How to put these numbers in a simpler form when there is a 24% in the neutral category? This is like a 35% Elected President, which did not look or sound good. Saying 43% against can also mean less than 50% against or can give the impression 57% was for it if the details were not given. On the other hand, saying 32% support could give the impression 68% was against. Luckily the numbers for neutral and dunno were also given to prevent the confusion.
Talking about confusion, when it was reported that 52% supported the budget, does it mean that 48% were against the budget? Was the survey conducted using only for or against, with no neutral or dunno? If that was the case, then it is understandable. If neutral and dunno were included, then the 52% for could mean a few things. One, no respondent ticks the neutral or dunno option. So it is a clear case of 52% support. Or it could be like 24% neutral and 1% dunno, leaving only 22% against the budget.
If this was the case, then there is no need to fear that support has fallen from 70% or 80% to 52% since only 22% was against. Wondering how they could get a 70% or 80% number in the past. Apparently from the reports in the media, it is likely a case of for or against type of survey, no buts and ifs, and 52% was for and 48% was against the budget.
It is not easy to use statistics to tell a clear story, like half full or half empty sometimes. Statistics are meant to make things easy and clearer to understand but turning out to be a tool for magicians to amaze or to wow the audience.

  3. In a representative REPUBLICAN system of government, the numbers describing what people like or don't like DON'T MEAN JACK SHIT.

Once the MPs (representatives) are chosen, it is their job to form and implement policy. They were voted in FAIR AND SQUARE to do exactly that.

Representative system of govt. (as opposed to direct democracy where voters have a say in everything) is the way this republic is managed and governed. It ensures that people's emotions are not taken into account because that's a very bad way of making decisions.

I'm actually surprised 32% of people surveyed actually supported the water price increase. I would have predicted a lower percentage. This is because price rises affect people "at the wallet level" and thus usually has a negative effect.

It is important not to trust surveys, simply because they are UNscientific.

Sample sizes are too small. Sample participants are generally people walking on certain streets (no variety) and don't take into account people who are missing from being surveyed. Also, there are no controls on VARIABLES like the weather (which affects mood), and other environmental and societal factors, as well as individual immediate circumstances.

For e.g.: if the person surveyed has just got off the phone with their spouse with whom they've been fighting, there present mood and mental state will definitely affect their response to the survey. Similarly, if the people surveyed had just had great sex, a delicious meal or bought a new over-priced trinket...they are likely to be agreeable and answer positively.

In my estimation, more people would REJECT the water price increase, because (my theory) in Singapore most people want to be seen as agreeing with the govt. they voted for. KIASU.

I would call this survey BULLSHIT. Number of rejections are too low!

  11. @virgo49:

Like I indicated previouosly---it is all WAYANG.

Firstly, the agency who conducted the survey was REACH.

They are the feedback unit of the government.

That's why I say the numbers for the budget and water price are LOW.

The majority of Singaporeans don't want to be seen disagreeing with the govt.

Singaporeans talk plenty of COCK, but actually most of them have NO BALLS when it comes to disagreeing with 'authority'.

    ReplyDelete
  12. "52% of the people support the budget but only 32% support the 30% water hike"

If i tell you today HK is 18 degree, Sun Mon night is 14 degree. U will look at me blank, this guy is mad right? Mad? not so if Sun and Mon u are in HK. Without thinker clothing, u gonna be chilled.

Note the difference? The set of numbers are only able to get into your head when you are involved or gonna face the problems.

Water taxes increase by 30% are not everyone in the survey s concern. Those young at Reach such as IB, are living with parents, they dont pay the 30%. U ask them, they will say they support the increases, what their masters want them to do. How many people reading this blog is also reading Reach? That means they are full time on the internet.

My point is: those going into Reach internet site are likely to support the garmen and elites, whatever they proposed. If there is a survey in other places, can still get the high support for 30% taxes? Yes. Survey among the non residents living in hotels. Will they object to 30% water increases?

So there is no concern of what the garmen want to say. As i put it. 30% taxes are nothing compare to coming gst increases. Why 30% so little, increase the taxes by 300% will be better for the elites pockets. This is within the elites rights to do so.

Not happy with the increases, vote for opposition party. No point looking at the statistics if you do not trust the figures, similar to me.

But be pragmatic. The costs of living increases on water, electricity, transport, conservancy charges, etc will slow down the purchasing of household goods further more. If IB like the increases, they still have to pay for the extra costs. Firms such as precision engineering, food manufacturing, and many others using lots of water will face small sales as they will have to push up the prices eventually.

We shall watch and see what will happen after the 30% kicks in. Be ready to see more people losing their jobs or not paid salaries. Not to forget the elites will continue to take in more pmets to kick sinkies out of jobs with their population policy, as long as pinky is in seat. U vote for them to treat u with a stick, kick you out of jobs, or the bosses lose businesses and kick u out of jobs, are the same: operating costs are pushed too high, and also the currency cannot come down due to past inflation of population policy, when S$ went up to 1.2 per usd. Again, u cannot change it as long as pap is the team, they like to have population to increase gst collection. U cannot afford the cost of living, eat less and drink less or vote opposition.

The Authority is kind of trying to pacify the People knowing very well that most hikes will rouse the Sentiment of those affected.et us put it this way, like it or not, the People have to pay. In the 1962 referendum on Singapore to merge with Malaysia
    - Singaporean voters were given three choices
    - But there was no option offered to reject the merger with Malaysia

  28. Voting Opposition or voting PAP is the same. The only difference is in name. As far as personalities are concerned, they are from the same mould of mindset and behavioral norm engineered and propagated by the PAP's Doctrine of 'Kiasuism', which permeates across the whole society. In other words, cowardice. This societal trait is well demonstrated by the number of Anonymous and Pseudonym used in the comment sections of all the social medias and blogs. So, unless there is an urgent and dire need by the masses, when a major shake-up of the whole government machinery, from top to bottom and bottom to top, from left to right and right to left, from every critical angle of personal as well as collective survival, there is no chance whatsoever that by voting Opposition, you will get a better government to lead and care for the country.
