Taxi driving, the last bastion for Singaporeans gone to foreigners

Jehangir Ibrahim wrote an article in the TRE on the lost of this exclusive vocation that used to be the preserve of Singaporeans. It used to be the choice of last resort for PMETs being replaced by foreigners.  Only Singaporeans were allowed to be taxi drivers. This is no more. Any foreigner can become a taxi driver.  The PMETs will now have to compete with foreigners again and are likely to lose out. There will be no more jobs for them if they lose this last vocation for self employment. This is what Jahangir wrote:

‘It was announced in Parliament yesterday that Uber, Grab or other transport app drivers will be regulated soon. Like taxi drivers, they will need to get a taxi vocational licence and be subjected to the various LTA taxi regulations.

There is no minimum age as long as the drivers held a Class 3/3A driving licence for at least two years.

But the biggest caveat is, both PRs and work permit holders can now apply….

Previously, only Singaporeans can drive taxi as can be seen in LTA website.. Only Singaporeans above 30 years old can drive one: It was announced in Parliament yesterday that Uber, Grab or other transport app drivers will be

• You must be at least 30 years old;
• You must be a Singapore Citizen holding a pink NRIC;
• You must have a valid Class 3/3A Singapore driving licence for a continuous period of at least one year at the point of application; and
• You must be able to speak and read basic English.’

I would not be too worried about the ex PMETs getting more competition from the foreigners. They are capable of looking after themselves, and hopefully bringing enough food to put on the table. I hope.

I have this aching concern for our women folks especially the young girls. How can any govt be so thoughtless to allow foreigners, with nothing to hold on them, with nothing to lose, with no records of their character and past, to drive our women folks around, and our young children, boys and girls? Getting into a taxi is like walking into a trap and become the prey and victim of the taxi drivers that harbor ill intent. Our women folks will be at the mercy of these foreigners. Are the well being of our women folks, our children, so cheap?

Singaporeans have been so accustomed to security and safety and take these for granted. How is this foreign element, foreigners allowed to drive taxis, to drive our women folks and children around change their lives? Very safe, nothing will happen to them? Not to worry?

My goodness, I thought only the masses are daft. I cannot expect those making such decisions and policies are more daft, putting our women folks and young children to unnecessary and unacceptable risk.

For those who think is kpkb, is unwarranted, so be it.  Any crime against our women folks and children due to this policy is the work of those who allowed it and those who condoned it.

I am just saying my peace as a concerned grandparent. I disagree with putting our women folks and children to unnecessary and unacceptable risk to their personal safety, at the mercy of unknown foreigners.

Stupidity has no cure.

The MIWS gahmen...ho lee shit...can u find a gahmen in the world that allow it's citizens to be screwed by foreigners? Most probably it can happen here in Sinkieland ..& the employers & greed r to he blamed as well. U may say that these taxis have CCTV so passengers r safe & Sinkieland is tiny island..but what bout the case of a robber of Stanchart that escaped to Thailand last year still on the run la..see we can't depend on the authorities here all the time...the Sinkies passengers of vulnerable group will b in great danger in the not so distant future & the blues men will have a hard time to handle..look like Sinkies days r numbered..do we have a Trump like garhmen to take care of Sinkies? Or the 70% dafts really serve u right? ..only time will tell..

  2. Mr RB,no worries lah. The PAP elites, even their children, grandchildren are heavily escorted by our First Class Security Branch officers.

The PAP elites do not mixed with the peasants only on election periods when they showed their humanity. So they think that the refugees are like Sinkies very disciplined and obedient.
No way they commit rapes or murders.

So they DONT worry or Care less as their own are well protected. Straits Times getting monotonous with even The Lady editors writing of lives living with her cats and husbands.

So need to have some sensational gory news of rapes, murders, riots for sale of their papers.

When I was in My Vernon camp with shooting range for arms repair testing and for those elite pistols and chew Chen clubs, LKY's sweet young daughter wearing NPCC cadet uniforms used to solo pistol training at the Range.

You know how many lady and men security officers running after her??

These Papies ministers and MPS are escorted by these paid by the state body guards worse than DEATH ROLL prisoners.

They must have committed worse crimes than them to be fearful of their citiZens

Are such policies the "WORK" of so called "SANE" pple?

Nicholas Copernicus, who discovered the Earth was round, was called "Insane" (by the elite establishment then) and thrown into jail bcos he went against the beliefs of the so called elite establishment?

Now, is Trump, who is maliced by many in the media (which mostly belonged to or owned by the elites one way or another), the "Copernicus" of modern times?

    13. Likewise for ah neh or blanga or pinoy or mya mya or minh chi ho?

$1,000 SGD for some is like 50 times what they can earn back home, if they can find a job?

Spurs in the (sinkies) hides are "plain excuses" to open floodgates?

    14. Even blanga earning Rm1,000 (abt S$300+) in matland, after 10 years can retire well back home?

In KL, so many Thais working there?

So workers from much lower costs countries can switch to work even in a relatively low per capita gdp cuntry like matland?

      Delete
    15. But can sinkies do that?

Can they go ah nehland earn S$100 a month and remit S$50 back to their families in peesai?

S$50 enough even for pocket money for a sch boy?

    16. So sinkies workers at the margin are "TRAPPED" between a ROCK (most expensive peesai city) and a HARD PLACE (other countries wages much lower)?

      So how?

U never hear "U DIE Ur Own Biz"?

      Delete
    17. The scary thing in peesai is even the cheapest pasar malam is more expensive than the shops in neighbpuring matland?

      Siao liao?

JLBs create most expensive city policies (while sinkies asleep) must thjnk for u meh?

Never hear "U DIE Ur Own Biz"?

  49. But kpkb cant change reality?
    February 01, 2017 6:49 am

Of course kpkb can change reality.
    - if cannot, then why are you here?
    - if cannot, then why PAP Millionaires try so hard to control Amos Yee?
    - if cannot, then why PAP Millionaires got so many laws against bloggers?

kpkb is how a democracy works
    - you need to return to China or North Korea if you don't know how to behave in a democracy
    - please don't emigrate to functioning democracies and spoil their democratic culture with your slave mentality

That begs this qn, isn't it?

Why the garment want to "hoist so much responsibilities on themselves" by making CPF with so many "BIG ROLES/ DUTIES" such as retirement funds, payment for housing mortgages, healthcare expenses and medical insurance and tertiary education?

    Ha ha ha

(Can) recall what old man called ainkies?

    Anybolee got the answer?

  55. CPF is now OPM and many people are looking at CPF as their private ATM. When they lose money, need money, they will find ways to take from the CPF and create all kinds of silly excuses saying it is for your own good. The truth is it is for their own good.

  56. Heooolo Bro,

OLDIES like us no need pick cardboards lah. Reserve for you all, don't be surprised near future and not you are old.

With making profits out of selling our Cheep cheep flats brought at a fraction of costs and earning 1000%.

Withdrawal of full CPF at 55.

Retrenchment benefits of nearly half million for some in the Oil Refinery Sector as protected by now defunct CAs.

Many had houses, apartments and condo in Matland to weather any emergency in sinking land.

The burden is passed to Today's daft new generation who still believed in the PAP.

Many oldies had blood in.their hands as accomplices to the sad fate sinking land is now having.

So, no need to pick cardboard.

    Here to you.

    CHEERS
