Ong Ye Kung – Multi party system not for us

This is the headline in The New Paper. The Today paper has this at the front page, ‘Multi party political system could ruin Singapore, Ong Ye Kung.’ I am a greenhorn in politics, coz I have never been a politician, so I am not sure what the ‘us’ meant. Who is this ‘us’? Multi party system not for us?

I disagree with the one party system is good for ‘us’ as I have a better system for Singapore, better than a one party ‘democratic’ system. I have Plato the Greek philosopher to back me up. It is a kingdom, a state ruled by a philosopher king. A king ruling a state, even not a philosopher, is half way there. A single party ‘democratic’ system does not have a king so not good according to Plato.

Ok, I can write a hundred books on the weaknesses and demerits of a kingship. But I am selling the kingship idea so I must ignore these bad things about the kingship and tell you only the good stuff. Please don’t say I am biased. If I am selling the one party idea I will say the same thing and don’t say the bad things.  I am just trying to be honest, by telling things that I want you to know, the good stuff and not the bad stuff.

Why is a kingship or kingdom good for Singapore? I won’t use the word ‘us’ as ‘us’ can mean only a small group of elites. The problem of most political systems is the politicians. Politicians tend to fight for their own interests. In a democracy, one party or multi parties, they would still face the problems of infighting, fearing that they would be voted out or be ousted by a conspiracy. They would always be on guard, or trying to fix other politicians so that they would not be fixed in the end. By so doing they would be spending more time politicking than trying to work for the good of the people.

In a kingship, the king will be very secured, life time hereditary position, so no fear of be ousted by voting, maybe a coup. The king, being secure, would then appoint the best jesters to work for him. King needs jesters to humour him. But he would also have many good ministers appointed by him and no one can accuse a king for nepotism or cronyism. That is what kingship is all about.

A king would write the pay check for the politicians and would not allow the politicians to write their own paychecks. The king would also check on the politicians and would not allow the politicians to check themselves.

See, so many good points in a kingship that could prevent the problems of a single party ‘democracy’ already.  Basically the king rules over the politicians and would behead any politician that is corrupt, so no need to pay million dollar salaries. I could go on and on about the goodness of a kingship especially for a small country like Singapore.

And Singapore is ideal for a kingdom. We have already developed an aristocratic class here, the natural aristocrats can assume their roles as lords, dukes, counts and of course as kings, princes and princesses. No need to hunt for such noble men and women. To turn this island into a kingdom is a piece of cake.

Yes my Lord, I am your humble subject. God bless the king. For those who love the English can look no further when we have our own king or queen and can sing God Save the king/queen with gusto.

And the children in schools can read all about the handsome princes and their white horses, not the kind in NS, and the beautiful princesses every day. So beautiful, full of enchanted stories for bed side stories too.

  5. Just for general background info for redbean readers who are not familiar with Plato's book on government called "The Republic"

The weakness of Plato's logic is his concept of the mythical "philosopher king"
    - what a modern politician might called "natural aristocrat"

Plato's idea is that this mythical philosopher king will "ownself check ownself"
    - this was Plato's pathetic response to the question of "who will do the check and balance on the actions of his mythical philosopher king"

The key question of any government or political system is always: "Who guards the Guardians?"
    - what is the system checks and balance?
    - how strong is this system?

Only a strong Opposition ... supported by an independent civil service, judiciary and army (whose loyalty is to the flag and constitution) ... can perform the checks and balances on a self-serving incompetent philosopher king.

  8. Yes! I think PAP is likely to hold on to power for a long long time
unless there is an internal split between the military and non-militery
    politicians within the party.

Unlikely to split in the next 4 GEs.

    Maybe before the 5th? 6th?

Nobody. That's why Ong Ye Kung said "Multi party system not for us". Because us, including Ong Ye Kung of course, are happy and have good life with one party.

  13. Finally, Mr Ong noted that the challenge for the PAP was for it to be as pluralistic a party as possible. "A party of all colours – take in everyone with different views … There are many PAPs, in a way. You have the PAP of PM Lee Hsien Loong. You can also have the PAP of DPM Tharman (Shanmugaratnam). You can have the PAP of Louis Ng, of Denise Phua, of Patrick Tay or Halimah Yacob. Everyone with a different bent, different objectives they want to achieve - and it must be broad enough a party to take in all of them," he said.

Doesn't matter, as long as majority voters see only one PAP, one that is the best to be voted as govt.

Best of course does not mean good, eg best among the worst.

  16. Whether one-party system works or multi-party system works, it is only a matter of personal opinions. The key thing is not whether it works or not. The key thing is whether the people of a particular country during a particular time want a single party or multi-party system.

With people like the failed-to-be-elected-by-the-people and shamelessly snaked through the back-door piggy-backed by the Prime Minister himself, Instant Multi-Millionaire Minister freshly assuming as the actor of an Educationist, it is very dangerous to have a single party system that "works to his liking"!

The Chinese history of 6,000 years has proven that a single-party system will definitely lead to a despotic state and finally to tyranny. The Communist System of a single party works because within the single party, there are multiple sub-parties to provide the checks-and-balance and alternative views. In Singapore, the pretentious parliamentary-democracy system is simply a dictatorial system using the "whip" to dictate the outcome of votes within the parliament. It has already led to ownself-check-ownself-without-checking. It has already stifled initiative and alternative viewpoints from within the PAP, within the Parliament, and within Singapore as a whole.

Moreover, Singapore has not experimented with the multi-party system, so how can anyone say with certainty that it will not work? This was the same as Taiwan when it was under the single party system of the KMT dictatorship. Now, Taiwan has a multi-party system which works. So is Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan, Thailand (with some problems) and lately Myanmar.

"The proof of the pudding is in the eating," so says the wise people.

  25. No sane people, who are true to themselves, will say one-party government is good for the people. Only self-serving, self-rewarding, self-enriching bastardized liars will attempt to deceive others that a one party government is good for any country.

One party means one leader. One leader means no other leaders can arise to challenge him. No challenges means easy-going for that leader. Easy-going means no transparency, no accountability, no efficiency, no effectiveness, total no respect to anyone other than his own ego, which means nothing or no one to fear, not even God.

Therefore, such a leader will have total unfettered powers to do anything he desires at his whims and fancies. Such a state of affairs is extremely dangerous for any country. Such has happened to Germany when Hitler rose to power, resulting in World War I and II, and the killings of and atrocities to the millions of Jews.

Such has also happened to Japan when the Emperor Hiroshito had absolute power together with a group of ruthless greedy expansionists advisors to give the wrong counsels to engage USA and destroy Pearl Harbour, which led to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Such has also happened to Ancient China, Ancient Europe, Ancient India and the lawless aboriginal tribes in the Amazon Jungles, Australia, Africa and Americas.

Such has happened during the Crusades and the Rise of Islam when conquests were the norms of the day and deaths of innocents were nothing but a matter of course at the pleasure of whoever the leaders were at those times.

Modern educated people should never allow such proponents of a one-party state to even be given any credibility, let alone to come into effect in the present or the future. Whoever that person is, he has Hitler in his blood and/or psyche - an extremely dangerous person to watch very closely.

Think, think, think again. Think deeply. For the sake of all mankind.

  29. Reality vs False News and False Hopes - Part 3A

Close cooperation between Singapore and the US on defense and security matters has advanced speedily and significantly over the last two decades.

On 15 January 1998 DPM and Defense Minister Tony Tan announced that Singapore would build a new New Naval Base to accommodate US aircraft carriers and other warships.

On 21 March 2001, the Changi Naval Base was completed.

On 22 March 2001, the USS Kitty Hawk (based in Japan) was the first Aircraft Carrier to berth at Changi Naval Base, which will support the US presence in the region for many years to come.

A Command Logistics Group Western Pacific, established July 1992, has been expanded and continues to be even more active today. It is the US 7th Fleet's principal logistics command and chief bilateral exercise coordinator for Southeast Asia and directly supports the execution of training exercises with Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines and Singapore.

More than 100 US Navy ships call at Singapore yearly, and US fighter jets regularly deploy here.

Singapore was a transit point for US ships, troops and aircraft during the Persian Gulf War. Its Paya Lebar Air Base supported US airlift operations to Somalia and elsewhere.

On 4th June, 2011, US Secretary of Defence, Robert M. Gates openly stated at Shangrila Dialogue: "Maritime security remains an issue of particular importance for the region, with questions about territorial claims and the appropriate use of the maritime domain presenting on-going challenges to regional stability and prosperity. The U.S. position on maritime security remains clear: we have a national interest in freedom of navigation; in unimpeded economic development and commerce; and in respect for international law. We also believe that customary international law, as reflected in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, provides clear guidance on the appropriate use of the maritime domain, and rights of access to it.... In Singapore, we are strengthening our bi-lateral defense relationship within the context of the Strategic Framework Agreement and pursuing more operational engagement most notably, by deploying U.S. Littoral Combat Ships to Singapore. We are examining other ways to increase opportunities for our two militaries to train and operate together..."

Singapore's Defense Minister, Ng Eng Hen, responded, "The US's strong presence and continued engagement in this area has been, and will continue to be a critical force of stability and progress for this region.... In that spirit, we are open to his proposal for forward deployment of the littoral combat ships in this area, so that it allows them to achieve that purpose of having a strong presence, a continued presence in the Asia Pacific region".

  31. The advances in military cooperation between Singapore and the US culminated in the station of four US Navy Littoral Combat Ships in Singapore, started in 2012. This has given the US Navy a direct advantage in exerting its military might to influence the outcome of the boiling disputes over the South China Sea, which China claims as her territorial waters. Singapore has now become a defacto US Military Base, joining the colossal groups of 900 US Military Bases around the World, specifically one of the 400 US Military Bases encircling China.

Repeated assertions by Singapore PM in Japan, elsewhere and in the Singapore Parliament to insist that China follows the bias "judgement" decided by the staged one-sided Hague Tribunal's regarding China's position in the South-China sea, confirmed that Singapore is strongly on the side of the US and belligerently against China, throwing her long-term good relationship with China into the gutter.

With the series of provocations by Singapore's leadership against China's national security and integrity concerns, the time was ripe for China to respond appropriately.

Hongkong has just done that on behalf of China by confiscating the 9 Terrex Amoured Vehicles, illegally landed on China's soil at the Hongkong Harbor, using a US Shipping Organization that bears the name American President Line. (Remember the First Pacific President accolade given to flatter President Obama at the White House dinner on 2nd August 2016?)

He will scale down all the tensions so that hen can cut the military spending.

Screw businessman, every penny made is a penny earned. He even ordered Mexico to pay for the Great Wall of USA.

This gives China time to further build up their Navies and Air Forces to match the USA.

  39. SINGAPORE — With dozens of online platforms passing off falsehoods as “citizen journalism”, individuals are increasingly empowered by social media to harass organisations, and the possibility of amending the Protection from Harassment Act (Poha) to include entities such as the Government is a welcome one, said legal experts.

Singapore Management University law don Eugene Tan — who had participated in the debates on the anti-harassment Bill as a Nominated Member of Parliament in 2014 — said Poha, if applied to non-natural persons, will “fill a lacuna in the law”.

“Otherwise, a public body might have to spend (an) inordinate (amount of) time and other limited resources to defend itself ... In today’s world of pervasive social media, the ability of an individual to harass an organisation is real and the real threat posed by false information cannot be underestimated,” said Associate Professor Tan.

  47. Politics emerges from culture. If Singapore was going to have multiparty politics, it would be in existence already.

The nature of Singapore culture is surrender to authority. You have to admit, that Singapore has done really well under a system of governance by Natural Elites.

Of course no system is ever "perfect", and Natural Elites being human are prone to error.

One also has to accept the presences of "losers"---the SJW's, hopeless cases and rebels without a cause in the society. But no need to worry, they're HARMLESS. Why? They are harmless because they don't initiate any ACTION for the changes they're looking for, the best they can do is write screeds of derision on forums, make useless but marginally entertaining YouTube videos.

Being fortunate to live in a stunningly wealthy society, these "losers" are actually "winners" because very few of the have to do any real work, and thus can spend inordinate amounts of their time hammering the establishment. This is a phenomenon you find only in RICH cuntries. In poorer cuntries like Vietnam or Cambodia, people just work together. People rarely complain.

Singaporeans are the world foremost CHAMPION COMPLAINERS, but they don't actually take any ACTION, so they need an efficient and effective government who will ACT on their behalf and get the necessary fucking shit done. To do so the govt-in-charge cannot afford to be hamstrung by dissent and people who talk shit and get in the way of PROGRESS and PRODUCTIVITY.

So occasionally loud-mouths will have to be taken down or silenced. Singaporeans as a majority LOVE THIS SYSTEM. As long as they're making money, most Singaporeans don't give a damn about assholes spruiking nonsense from Hong Lim. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

The minister did not have to mention it at all. The fact that he did is now going to send many of the sheeple into paroxysms of horror---believing that "one party system no good lah".

The evidence suggests otherwise: One party system VERY GOOD lah. But it must be the "right" party.

So the question is: IS the PAP the "right" party?
