The world is under threat. Free trade and globalization under threat. And out came Joe Biden and Xi Jinping in Davos to speak up in defence of free trade and against protectionism. Trump’s America are going to raise trade barriers and protectionism, threatening the very institutions the Americans were championing in the last 7 decades. China benefited from the existing world order but Trump is out to dismantle it, claiming that the Americans are losers and he needs to make America great again by breaking down the global system that was built by the Americans.
China is protesting and leading the world leaders to tell the Americans and Europeans that free trade and globalization are good for them and they cannot run away from them. Xi Jinping promised that China would keep its economy open to the world. Klaus Schwab, executive chairman of the World Economic Forum, WEF, hailed Xi’s key note speech, as a ‘very important speech at a historic time’. The free world of the West returning to isolation is raising fears of trade wars.
Joe Biden in his dying days as the Vice President of the USA, joined Xi Jinping to call for the preservation of free trade and globalization. His last few words before his expiry as Vice President spoke volumes on the dire consequences when Trump moves into the White House.
What is happening? Where would Singapore stand now, siding with its old allies that are now against globalization and free trade or standing on the side of China to promote free trade and globalization?
What if the USA raises trade barriers against Singapore imports? What if both China and USA closes their doors to Singapore? Would Singapore take its principled stand on free trade and globalization and joined the Philippines and Malaysia to be on the side of China against the anti free trade and pro protectionism Trump America?
President Donald Trump's speech after taking the oath of office - Part 1
ReplyDeleteChief Justice Roberts, President Carter, President Clinton, President Bush, President Obama, fellow Americans, and people of the world: Thank you.
We, the citizens of America, are now joined in a great national effort to rebuild our country and to restore its promise for all of our people. Together, we will determine the course of America, and the world, for many, many years to come. We will face challenges. We will confront hardships. But we will get the job done.
Every four years, we gather on these steps to carry out the orderly and peaceful transfer of power, and we are grateful to President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama for their gracious aid throughout this transition. They have been magnificent.
Today's ceremony, however, has very special meaning. Because today we are not merely transferring power from one administration to another, or from one party to another - but we are transferring power from Washington, D.C. and giving it back to you, the people.
For too long, a small group in our nation's capital has reaped the rewards of government while the people have borne the cost. Washington flourished - but the people did not share in its wealth. Politicians prospered - but the jobs left, and the factories closed. The establishment protected itself, but not the citizens of our country.
Their victories have not been your victories; their triumphs have not been your triumphs; and while they celebrated in our nation's capital, there was little to celebrate for struggling families all across our land.
That all changes - starting right here, and right now, because this moment is your moment: it belongs to you. It belongs to everyone gathered here today and everyone watching all across America. This is your day. This is your celebration. And this, the United States of America, is your country.
What truly matters is not which party controls our government, but whether our government is controlled by the people. January 20th, 2017, will be remembered as the day the people became the rulers of this nation again. The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer.
Everyone is listening to you now. You came by the tens of millions to become part of a historic movement the likes of which the world has never seen before. At the centre of this movement is a crucial conviction: that a nation exists to serve its citizens.

President Donald Trump's speech after taking the oath of office - Part 2
ReplyDeleteAmericans want great schools for their children, safe neighbourhoods for their families, and good jobs for themselves. These are the just and reasonable demands of righteous people and a righteous public.
But for too many of our citizens, a different reality exists: Mothers and children trapped in poverty in our inner cities; rusted-out factories scattered like tombstones across the landscape of our nation; an education system, flush with cash, but which leaves our young and beautiful students deprived of all knowledge; and the crime and the gangs and the drugs that have stolen too many lives and robbed our country of so much unrealised potential.
This American carnage stops right here and stops right now. We are one nation - and their pain is our pain. Their dreams are our dreams; and their success will be our success. We share one heart, one home, and one glorious destiny.
The oath of office I take today is an oath of allegiance to all Americans.
For many decades, we've enriched foreign industry at the expense of American industry; subsidised the armies of other countries while allowing for the very sad depletion of our military; we've defended other nations' borders while refusing to defend our own; and spent trillions and trillions of dollars overseas while America's infrastructure has fallen into disrepair and decay.
We've made other countries rich while the wealth, strength, and confidence of our country has dissipated over the horizon. One by one, the factories shuttered and left our shores, with not even a thought about the millions and millions of American workers that were left behind. The wealth of our middle class has been ripped from their homes and then redistributed all across the world. But that is the past. And now we are looking only to the future.
We assembled here today are issuing a new decree to be heard in every city, in every foreign capital, and in every hall of power. From this day forward, a new vision will govern our land. From this day forward, it's going to be only America First, America First.
Every decision on trade, on taxes, on immigration, on foreign affairs, will be made to benefit American workers and American families.
We must protect our borders from the ravages of other countries making our products, stealing our companies, and destroying our jobs. Protection will lead to great prosperity and strength.
I will fight for you with every breath in my body - and I will never, ever let you down.
President Donald Trump's speech after taking the oath of office - Part 3
ReplyDeleteAmerica will start winning again, winning like never before. We will bring back our jobs. We will bring back our borders. We will bring back our wealth. And we will bring back our dreams.
We will build new roads, and highways, and bridges, and airports, and tunnels, and railways all across our wonderful nation.
We will get our people off of welfare and back to work - rebuilding our country with American hands and American labour. We will follow two simple rules: Buy American and hire American.
We will seek friendship and goodwill with the nations of the world - but we do so with the understanding that it is the right of all nations to put their own interests first.
We do not seek to impose our way of life on anyone, but rather to let it shine as an example - we will shine - for everyone to follow.
We will reinforce old alliances and form new ones - and unite the civilised world against radical Islamic terrorism, which we will eradicate completely from the face of the Earth.
At the bedrock of our politics will be a total allegiance to the United States of America, and through our loyalty to our country, we will rediscover our loyalty to each other. When you open your heart to patriotism, there is no room for prejudice.
The Bible tells us: "How good and pleasant it is when God's people live together in unity."
We must speak our minds openly, debate our disagreements honestly, but always pursue solidarity. When America is united, America is totally unstoppable.
There should be no fear - we are protected, and we will always be protected. We will be protected by the great men and women of our military and law enforcement and, most importantly, we will be protected by God.
Finally, we must think big and dream even bigger. In America, we understand that a nation is only living as long as it is striving. We will no longer accept politicians who are all talk and no action - constantly complaining but never doing anything about it.
The time for empty talk is over. Now arrives the hour of action. Do not allow anyone to tell you that it cannot be done. No challenge can match the heart and fight and spirit of America. We will not fail. Our country will thrive and prosper again.
We stand at the birth of a new millennium, ready to unlock the mysteries of space, to free the Earth from the miseries of disease, and to harness the energies, industries and technologies of tomorrow.
A new national pride will stir our souls, lift our sights, and heal our divisions.
It is time to remember that old wisdom our soldiers will never forget: that whether we are black or brown or white, we all bleed the same red blood of patriots, we all enjoy the same glorious freedoms, and we all salute the same great American Flag.
And whether a child is born in the urban sprawl of Detroit or the windswept plains of Nebraska, they look up at the same night sky, they fill their heart with the same dreams, and they are infused with the breath of life by the same almighty Creator.
So to all Americans, in every city near and far, small and large, from mountain to mountain, and from ocean to ocean, hear these words:
You will never be ignored again.
Your voice, your hopes, and your dreams, will define our American destiny. And your courage and goodness and love will forever guide us along the way.
Together, we will make America strong again.
We will make America wealthy again.
We will make America proud again.
We will make America safe again.
And, yes, together, we will make America great again.
Thank you, God bless you, and God bless America. Thank you. God bless America.

Please stop conflating Singapore with PAP.
ReplyDeleteSingapore is not PAP.
And PAP is not Singapore.
Respectfully suggest redbean's last paragraph should be read as:
What is happening?
Where would PAP stand now, siding with its old allies that are now against globalization and free trade or standing on the side of China to promote free trade and globalization?
What if both China and USA closes its doors to PAP?
Would PAP take its principled stand on free trade and globalization and joined the Philippines and Malaysia to be on the side of China against the anti free trade and pro protectionism Trump America?
-----------
Please remember.
There is no Singapore.
There is only the kingdom of PAP.
What if the USA raises trade barriers against Singapore imports? What if both China and USA closes its doors to Singapore?
ReplyDeleteRB
Doesn't matter, PAP will still win elections because the opposition is still not ready to be govt, tio bo?
ReplyDeleteYou asked......"Would Singapore take its principled stand
on free trade and globalization and joined the Philippines
and Malaysia to be on the side of China against the anti
free trade and pro protectionism Trump America?"............
The answer is........Why not! Why not!
Should! Should! Should!
Remember this old chinese saying........
没有永远的朋友! 没有永远的敌人!
Be happy Worry less!
Will there be a day when we have a Prime Minister as elected by the People of Singapore???
ReplyDeleteHe/She will say the same : Singapore belongs to you and not just a rodent breed of elites who enriched themselves at your expense????
GE 2020???
Any body guess???
Thank you Dragon Fly and anon. I will rewrite Trump's speech for Singapore and Singaporeans. This is what a President and leader of a country and nation should be saying and doing. Some people have forgotten the basics of a nation and the role of a national leader.
ReplyDeleteThings were already so bad now that it may not get any worse lah.
ReplyDeleteYet there were no legal protests in Hong Lim Park, let alone illegally on the streets.
And even as recently as May last year, Chee Soon Juan could not even win a by election (caused by PAP MP affair some more!) against a PAP minority candidate in a Chinese majority SMC!
So like that PAP where got worry even if they screw up like what is happening?
And smart Sinkies either make money and vote PAP, or if not, they emigrate to a better place. So why would they bother to join opposition to fight PAP in elections, tio bo? And luckily for PAP, majority (aka 70%) are smart, make money and have good life.
The opposition, without enough smart people and money, of course will lose lah. And lose big some more. No surprise, tio bo?
ReplyDeleteVirgo49 11.06am, I know where you come from.
But the best one can hope for in ge2020 is:
PAP 80% vs 20% OPPS
This Singapore lah! Singaporeans! Home!
Correct?
And smart Sinkies either make money and vote PAP...
ReplyDelete11:13 am
Tiok. And smart Sinkies, even if they want to vote opposition, also will not join opposition. So opposition smart people and money no enough.
Because obviously not smart to join opposition with 93% chance only to lose big big, tio bo?
Kpkb in blog like what others and I are doing, although to no effect, is still better and shiok, don't u think? Like they say, kong song lumpar song. Hahahaha.
PAP 80% vs 20% OPPS
ReplyDelete11:24 am
Seriously, no surprise to me even if that happen.
U want to be MP? Better join PAP.
And even as recently as May last year, Chee Soon Juan could not even win a by election (caused by PAP MP affair some more!) against a PAP minority candidate in a Chinese majority SMC!
ReplyDelete11:13 am
This will give Ah Loong even more confidence that PAP will win big big again in GE 2020. And Ah Loong indeed have good reasons to feel confident. So I think he will not be bothered by the kpkb of Sinkies, whether in blogs or otherwise. He knows Sinkie opposition and Sinkies very well.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous 11.32am, thank you very very much!
No! I am not qualified to be a MP or PAP member.
I want to be a 小人物! 贡献一份微薄的力量!
Cheers!
I predict Charles Chong will win GE 2020 for Punggol East (PE), if PE is still there and he still alive by then to contest.
ReplyDeleteBecause PAP candidates, whether it is LKY or Charles Chong, all have equally good chance of winning, their health and age notwithstanding.
On the contrary, the opposition, save for Hougang, all will have equally good chance of losing, no matter who or where they contested.

But who can stand in the way and stop a tsunami in its path?
In terms of parallel, the last globalisation trend was at its height between 1850 and 1870s, not unlike the current one between the 1970s and 1990s?

The Pathetic and Tragic Story of the Little Red Dot - Part V
ReplyDeleteThe New King's temper hit the roof. He threw the Knuckle Duster straight into the face of Jinx Forever. She dodged and it missed her entirely. She grabbed hold of a small stool in front of her dressing desk and dashed toward her husband. She was so fast that the New King had no time to react. She used the small stool and whacked hard onto the head of her husband. He fell down to the floor unconscious, unable to even move a finger. Blood was oozing out from the wound on his head. She panicked. She wanted to shout for help but only managed to make a faint squeak, "Help ...". Nobody came. All her maids, servants and body-guards had scurried when they heard the commotion. They knew very well, after working for them for donkey years, that it was better not to hang around during such a situation.
Jinx Forever called out again and again. Still nobody answered her calls. In the mean time, blood from her husband's head continues to ooze out. Seeing her husband lying unconscious and bearly breathing, with blooding flowing out of his head, she had no choice but to get out of the bedroom to go and seek help. She was away for about 44 minutes. By the time she came back with two security guards, her husband's body had disappeared, totally vanished in thin air! She could not believe her eyes.
For many days, not a single person could tell her where her husband had gone, or why he simply vanished. Initially, she tried not to inform others. As days past into a week, she could not conceal the fact of the New King's disappearance any longer. She had to inform someone. She called up her mother. Her mother advised her to inform the Chief of the Cabinet. She did.
The Inner-Cirle of the Cabinet, composed of five persons who were related to the New King in one way or another, held an urgent meeting to discuss the matter. They decided to enthrone the New King's 2nd Son to replace him. The next day, they announced to the whole country that the New King had died of a heart-attack and proceeded to prepare for his "funeral" without a body in the coffin. The "funeral" was rushed through. The New King's "body" laid in state in the Hall of the Ancestors for only 3 days. Then it was "burried" at the 'Tomb of Kings'.
One week later, the 2nd son of the New King was enthroned. He was only 25 years old and was still studying overseas when his father "died". He had to terminate his studies abruptly and flew home in a jiffy.....

@ "panic, panic, panic...the sky is falling!!" Chicken Little aka redbean:
ReplyDelete» The world is under threat. «
No, it isn't. And especially because you have no proof that it is.
» Free trade and globalization under threat. «
Free-trade has always been under various sorts of threats...from govt, to unions, to gangsters, to lazy, unremarkable and uncompetitive organisations, companies and even individuals. Globalisation too has been under threat ever since the Roman Empire and British East India Company did what they did.
However free trade and globalisation have always won out---eventually---even though it had to take wars, politics and massive loss of human life to do so.
HUMAN NATURE---the nutshell.
✮ 1. Humans life to OWN STUFF...beginning with their own lives and sense of existence
✮ 2. Humans are social animals...they like to gather together and engage in "exchanges"
★ 3. Humans ACT to achieve PURPOSEFUL GOALS. (for e.g.: He kills his wife's lovers one by one for the purpose of JUSTICE, as the exclusive "tenant" of his wife's vagina 😡)
Even a choice not to act is an action taken to achieve a purposeful goal (for e.g.: He refuses to kill his wife's lovers fro the purpose of his own humanity or because he would like to join in the fun! 🤡)
The world was doing fine with globalisation and (sort of) free trade without the TPP. And the world will continue to do so. There will be a few hiccups here and there as politicians and their toady special interest groups try to influence "The Game", but because we have globalised, freely traded capital, debt and currency markets, any asshole president is welcome to try putting up barriers.
China + India populations make up 37% of all the humans on earth. They are going to trade their goods and services freely and secure themselves in every corner of the globe to produce, trade, exchange and GET OUT OF POVERTY and then onto FABULOUS WEALTH, and not even the (so-called) "great" Donald J Trump is going to stop them.
So all you panic merchants....relax lah. If US has trade barriers for you to sell your "widget", go somewhere else lah. The world is a huge tent for anyone to play "The Game". There's always some fuckers who will try and spoil "The Game", that is why it's a game...you need skill, guile, tactics and strategy to play.
"The Game" is never played by rules. There are some "guidelines" which players sort-of agree to (like FTA's bi-lateral agreements), but the aim of the game is to focus on your own SELF INTEREST and make as much GAIN as possible.
Everything in The Game follows the 3 axioms of human existence:
⁍ Humans like to own stuff
⁍ Humans are social beings
⁍ Humans act to achieve certain ends
If anyone tries to make LAWS which contradict these basic attributes of HUMAN NATURE, those laws will be BROKEN. Guaranteed. 🤡

ReplyDeleteOne week later, the 2nd son of the New King was enthroned. He was only 25 years old and was still studying overseas when his father "died". He had to terminate his studies abruptly and flew home in a jiffy. His name was Hong-Yee (meaning Wind of Wishes). His mother confided in him how his father had "died".
Hong-Yee was reluctant to be entrhoned so soon and suggested that they should search for his father and exhaust all avenues of hope before replacing him. However, his mother and the Inner-Circle of the Cabinet advised him otherwise.
"If the truth goes out, the royal family would become a laughing stock," echoed all five members of the Inner-Circle of the Cabinet.
For the sake of The Family, Hong-Yee accepted to be enthroned but he insisted to be known as "The President" and named his tiny country as the Republic of Little Red Dot, to replace the Kingdom of Little Red Dot. All those in positions of power felt uneasy but dared not go against his wishes.
On the Day of His Inauguration as the President of the Republic of Little Red Dot, he proclaimed himself as The First President, and his tiny island state as a Republic and tasked a Constituional Committee to draft out the Republic's Constitution within the next six months.
During his Inauguration, he gave a 16 minutes' speech, which was as follows:
Dignataries and Fellow Countrymen,
We, the citizens of the Republic of Little Red Dot, are now joined in a great national effort to remould our country and to build upon the glory left behind by my predecessors, with you and for you. Together, we will determine the course of Little Red Dot, and the world, for many years to come. We will face challenges. We will confront hardships. But we will get the job done.
In future, every six years, we shall gather at this Hall of the People to carry out the orderly and peaceful transfer of power, and you shall be very grateful to me and always remember me and my ancestors.
Today's ceremony, however, has very special meaning. Because today we are not merely transferring power from one King to another, or from one administration to another - but we are transferring all the powers to me, your First President, your Supreme Commander-in-Chief, the Highest Authority in the Land.
From now on, only a small group of my Inner-Circle, the special white-horses, my cronnies, the sychophants and the lap-dogs in our Republic shall reap all the rewards of government while you, the people, shall bear the cost, especially through taxes, insurance and compulsory savings.
Only my Ministers shall flourish through the benefits gained in the growth of our GDP at all costs. You, the people shall only benefit through goodies dished out during our staged general elections every six years.

Going back to deglobalisation, what were the triggers (for this trend reversal)?
DeleteGlobalisation largely benefitted the big businesses, the global elites, the top 1% but the exploitation of the global resources namely land (raw materials), labour etc brought about enormous imbalances such as global warming, decimation of the middle class, terrorism, unstoppable sliding into the abyss and abject poverty and vicious cycle of the lower strata of almost every society etc?
Despite the unprecedented media bash, coverage and warnings of the peril of BREXIT, the British majority unequivocally and resounding say no to "more and further integration" within the European region.
The outcome of the US election in Nov 2016 left no one in any doubt what to come next?
DeleteWas this a new trend that just popped up overnight in 2016?
Obviously not?
It was already evident as early as start of the new millennium but many chose to pretend the global imbalances and deep fissures within societies brought about by rapid globalisation were non-existent?

DeleteIs it too LATE now (to do anything)?
A perfect storm is brewing (as far as this extremely open, small and vulnerable peesai is concerned)?
To be cont'd ........
The current de-globalisation process seems inevitable given that climate change, extreme mass poverty in developing countries, worsening income inequality between the top 1% and the rest in every country and the tidal wave-like migratory pressures all proved to be too overwhelming for the global ruling elites?

What does DT's appointment of ultra far right leader Steve Bannon as the incoming White House Chief Strategist portends for the fate of globalisation (and with that the fate of a peesai)?
Nonetheless, in the short run, exonomic growth should maintain status quo?
ReplyDeleteFrom 2018 onwards till 2022, if some measures are taken, the 3conomy would most likely be fortunate to stay flat?

ReplyDeleteSurbana, formed after the TC Legislation was set up with mainly ex HDB officers to do what's LUP lam.par upgrading etc.
Then, they branched into some overseas projects after the Lam Par LUP or MUP die their death.
Fifty Four of their employees given walking certs.
Their wayang unions upset.
So,do not think that unemployment does not affect ex civil or statutory board workers who sponged on tax payers monies.
Karma works in mysterious ways
We will make Singapore GREAT again.

The Pathetic and Tragic Story of the Little Red Dot - Part VII
ReplyDeleteOnly psuedo-politicians who work for me and obey my command will prosper. The rest of you will have to work day and night until you die, in order to pay for all the taxes, compulsory insurance premiums, life-long savings, bills and expenses, and the instalments of your small-space government flats, your exhorbitantly and artificially priced highly expensive ordinary cars and your children's compulsory education from age 3 to 18, after which they will be conscripted and serve as cheap labour in the Military, Policle, Civil Defence and Nursing Homes.
Most of the jobs will be given to foreign talents and Multi-National factories will move to other countries; and many of you will be retrenched with very little compensations.
Our Laws, Police, Judges and Armed Forces will only protect my Establishment and my Family, even to the extent of protecting the names of my Father and Grandfather against commmercial exploitations and criticisms of what they did in the past.
My victories will not be your victories; my triumphs will not be your triumphs; and while My Family, relatives and cronies celebrate in our country's five-star hotels in the city, there will be little to celebrate for you and your pathetic struggling families all across Little Red Dot.
That all will be the changes - starting right here, and right now, because this moment is My moment: it belongs to Me. It does not belong to everyone gathered here today and everyone watching all across Little Red Dot. This is My Day. This is My Celebration.
And this country, the Republic of Little Red Dot, belongs to everyone, not just you my fellow countrymen. It also belongs to the foreigners working and staying here helping to grow our GDP for my Instant Multi-Millionaire Ministers to grow richer and richer. And you must welcome them with open arms, open heart and open legs; you must give up your decent, good-paying jobs to them, integrate with them and work for them as maids, servants, toilet cleaners, taxi drivers, chauffers, cooks, security guards and other menial low-paying jobs, because they are here to create such jobs for you and you should be happy to accept them without complaints.
And they will be buying up all the expensive, luxurious real estates and condominiums, and also staying in your midst, using up all your common space and facilities, taking up all the hospital beds, overload and overwork our trains to the maximum until they keep breaking down so frequently that you will take it as a norm in my well-run country. They will also infiltrate, intrude, invade and infest all your eating places, food courts, restaurants, shopping centres, entertainment centres, sports complexes, swimming pools, and other essential services and facilities.
We shall have a dominant political, which shall be my party known as the Pay And Play Party, PAPP in short, and many other small psuedo political parties to help give a semblance of Democracy and hold staged elections, so that I can decieve the world that we are not a Dictatorship. What truly matters is not which party controls our government, but whether our government is controlled by MY Family.
Ask not what Little Red Dot can do for you, ask what you can do for Little Red Dot and My Family.
January 20th, 2017, will be remembered as the day the people became the slaves of this Little Red Dot. The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten forever and ever. Are you listening now, everyone?
You came by the tens of thousands to become part of a historic movement the likes of which the world has never seen before. At the centre of this movement is a crucial conviction: that a nation exists to serve its Master, Me and Me Alone.
To be continued in Part VIII.

I guess our little boy is not going to be invited to the White House anytime soon.
Good.
Let's save some taxpayers money and spend on our needy Singaporeans instead.
Vote Opposition.
Let's make Singapore great again.
Let's make Singaporeans proud again.
