Joseph Schooling - Singapore's golden boy in Rio

Picture courtesy from TRE. He looks so Singaporean.

The elusive gold medal in the Olympic Games finally arrived, in style, in Olympic record time at 50.39. What is more special is that it was brought home by a true blue Singaporean, a third generation Singapore born Singaporean. This gold medal does not come with all the controversies of foreign talents, of mercenaries, but home grown and hard work. This is a medal that all Singaporeans can be proud of.

Schooling won his 100m butterfly in the company of the swimming greats in Phelps, Le Clos and Cseh, all wanting to win this event to add to their cupboards of gold medals. And there was Joseph Schooling standing there up front to deny them this glory.

Would this home grown talent spur a rethinking in the sports field, to think and have faith in our very own children, that we should start to grow our own timber again, though 30 years late? See how much wasted opportunities for our children, how much time and money wasted on the foolish dream of money can buy everything, including honour!

This crazy fad of buying talents transcends all fields of enterprise in the island that was once proud of our own talents and our ability to be better than the best in the world. But for the last 30 years Singaporeans have been living in a sick belief that we are daft and useless in everything and anything from anywhere, from little third world villages, are better than us. And many silly Singaporeans believe so even today. And they are still bringing in plane loads of rubbish to replace Singaporean talents and our children and expecting Singaporeans to down grade to become security guards and taxi drivers.

No, all the craps about upgrading, skills upgrading, are really skills downgrading, income downgrading, expectation downgrading, and downgrading of pride and dignity.

Schooling may be a champion in sports, in the swimming pool, but his triumph should open up the eyes of dead gold fish eyes, to see that Singaporeans are not 'has beens' and can be the best', and be proud people once again, not daft in their own countries, not good enough for everything and we need foreigners to replace them, replace their genes and see to their extinction.

Well done Joseph Schooling. Your victory is more than a victory in the swimming pool in the Olympic Games. Your victory is a victory for all Singaporeans, that there is still life and goodness and talent among Singaporeans. We are proud to be Singaporeans again. No need to hide behind foreigners, behind mercenaries for our glory. We should end this silly pursuit of buying foreign talents to do us 'proud'.

Yes. Let's celebrate by voting PAP in GE 2020.
Let's vote out Workers' Party in Hougang.
Are we stupid enough to do just that?
    You bet.

Let's bring in more foreign talents.

Dont be jealous and spoil sb's party.

If the rest of people don't know how to fight for their rights. It's their fault.

Not so easy to sway voters unless someone or more sacrifice ( i do mean real sacrifice ). Last time woman have no voting rights, how they achieve it go watch the movie "suffragette".

  10. Schooling's dad had to take him out of the Sg system to train in US. Had he stayed under Singapore Sports Association he may have never won gold. Think the likes of Tao Li and the rest. Ironic that his family had to out their own cost to be a world champion, while SSA with all the funding from the mega rich PAP government, cannot even produce a single Olympic champ. Pathetic.

    Congrats to Schooling anyway.

It is subconcious obsessive behaviour, all emotions devoid of logic and reasons. So sad that you are inflicted with such a disease, likely to be self inflicted or being programmed by what you read.

NS is to show at stadium with shouting, and the elite can go into seating waving at u lah. U dont like that honor?

Honestly, as working crowd, NS is pulling force against our chance to get employed by the employers hiring foreigners to save employer cpf. Vote for opposition to get rid of employment pass and s pass free passage into singapore like their grand father s land.

One kitleng go, another kitleng is hired to replace him. And more kitleng are hired when citizens are retrenched.

Schooling if deferred NS is not end of his problem. The weight lifting old medal of Singapore was unable to pay for a trip to see Olympic the last time of his life.

Old medal is for Singapore as a brand, the real winner can be jobless when is not needed in sports. Pap is bias against citizens is an attitude of the elites. Only voting opposition can get the level ground again. Dont be too overjoyed. Look at the big picture. Its doomed for citizens.

Sometimes, it is good to be average and have plenty of fun and don't give two hoot about winning when winning will mean that the rest will have to "live like schooling" - in pursue of success or slavery - though schooling being a national hero will have his life set for him.

Some Facts about Joseph Schooling, you decide for yourself
Joseph Issac Schooling, born in SIngapore. Father is a 3rd generation singaporean of mixed English and Eurasian Portuguese heritage. Mother is a Malaysian Chinese who is a singapore PR. She has been living in singapore for decades but has not taken up Singapore citizenship.

Went to ACS Primary school. After PSLE, his swimming potential was identified by the parents, and they decided to send him to the Jacksonville, Florida to attend the Bolles School, which is a school specializing in training atheletes, in particular swimmers. Bolles has had a swimmer alumnus or student competing in every Olympic games since 1972. Their swimming program was set up by Gregg Troy who was the US Olympic Swim coach for the 2012 Olympic games. Imagine your secondary school swimming coach is a former Olympic swimmer and coached Michael Phelps in the 2012 Olympics!! What a powerhouse your school would be in the pool. because he is an international student, Bolles has a boarding program for its foreign students. The cost of one year of school fees and room and board is USD $47,000. Guess how much the PAP and SNOC contributed to this amount. Zero would be a fair guess.

After he graduated from Bolles, he was offered a swim scholarship at University of Texas, one of the top 5 swimming programs amongst US universities. The Head Coach for the U of T swimming program is Eddie Reese, former head coach of the US Olympics swim team in the 2004 and 2008 Olympics. If you know anything about the swim program, you know that nothing is left to chance. Professional full-time dieticians, sports psychologist, strenght and conditioning coaches, multi million weight rooms, etc are all part and parcel of what atheletes get when they go there. But even on a scholarship, its not cheap, with frequent travel to Singapore to compete in the SEA and Asian games and other social visits. Also, out of pocket costs and other costs in USD is also not cheap.

It was at this point when the big hooha between Schooling's mother MINDEF took place over his deferment. After a protracted and public fight, where she used the news media to put pressure on the PAP, you know who won the fight. Unfortunately, in earlier times, without the aid of modern day internet and social media, many other atheletes were lost to NS and a short sighted govt. policy. The race driver Andrew Tang is an example of a failed request for NS deferment. Ang Peng Siong in an earlier time was another case.

    So to sum it up.................
The Schoolings and not the govt paid huge money to send Joseph to Bolles for his swim coaching and studies
The Schoolings and not the govt got the U of T scholarship for Joseph, even though it seems the PAP is giving full scholarships to every tom dick and harry FT
The PAP wanted to sabotage the whole thing by making him do NS at such a critical junction in his swim career, and it would have happened if not for his mother's intervention.

The other Republic swimmer Quah Zheng Wen was not so fortunate that his family can send him to Bolles and hence is stuck with no name national coach carlos lopez, a bronze medallist in the Olympics and with the pathetic facilities in singapore. If Quah had the same opportunities, maybe we have 2 medals or more.

U decide how much credit the PAP should get. Then see how many of these assholes jump on the bandwagon until it breaks.

If winning is really everything in Singapore:
    a) Do you think we would have had a new SMRT CEO 2 years ago?
    b) Do you think Chip Goodyear would have been Temasek CEO 10 years ago?

  98. In a rat race, the gods can choose the winning rat by offering "incentives" to boost performance. When that happens, it is no longer a natural race between rats. There is now a political element introduced into the race.

People should be very concern about the implications of such "unnatural competition".
