Signs of desperation to collect more money

A suggestion that the govt is desperate for money would be simply brush aside as hogwash. How could the govt be short of money when they could throw parties and spent millions, hundreds of millions without a blink of the eye, spending billions on scholarships for foreigners, etc etc? And the national reserves, probably a trillion dollars, and the regular pumping by the people into the CPF in the billions every month, the COEs and all kinds of schemes to collect more money, the govt has plenty of money, even with the big losses in HDB flat subsidies, the govt got so much money that it can be described as ‘chiat buay leow’.

But why is the govt introducing such unbelieveable schemes to make the citizens pay and pay like it is desperate for money? The stock markers all over have fallen and a lot of billions must have been wiped out recently, easily 20% of any fund. But many of the schemes to collect more money from the people were conceived before the collapse of the stock markets so have nothing to do with the losses in equity investments. Anyway such investments are long term.

The Medishield Life, with a stroke of a pen everyone must pay from birth to death, to this insurance scheme must reap in a lot of money. How many insurance agents could sell insurance to 3.5m people in one go? That is not all. The CPF still demands the contributors to top up a Basic Healthcare Sum of $49,800 to be locked up for life. If 2m members the sum will come to be nearly $100b of the CPF contributors money stuck in the Scheme. For what and for who?

And that is not all. Citizens who are living overseas, paying their own insurance schemes overseas, some may not even return and been overseas for decades, must also contribute to the Medishield Life Insurance Scheme! Like this, you think desperate or not? Many of our citizens may not even return here to benefit from the Medishield Life. Why must they be made to pay for it, for life? There are many children born overseas by parents that are PRs to their host countries. These children who are still Singaporeans, must also pay for Medishield Life without stepping into the island. Like that, right or wrong? Can or not?

And they taking away free parking in schools from the teachers? What about the police and soldiers in the camps? What about grassroot leaders having free parkings, want to take away also? In remote corners of the islands, more and more of such parking spaces would be turned to pay parking.

What do you think, desperate of not?

  2. Why?

Long long ago the old people, the pioneers that is, already know that when they are given candies and chicken wings, they have to pay back one whole chicken. Pinky already said that there is no such thing as a free lunch. So, stop wondering why the sky is so high.

When the pipe piper plays the PAP tune and the people wants to follow, who is to be blamed? Pay and pay means pay and pay lah, nothing more nothing less. We have to live with it now and forever.

  3. Apply 80-20 rule, after school parking fee benefits more n gives back to school . For example, the (contracted) big school bus can utilise (charges apply) the empty parking space at night . Hands-On Green Matters

  4. When oil prices dropped to a third of their peak, we were given a few cents back in fare rebates and a few miserable dollars in electricity rebates.

And the daft citizens live happily ever after, like the animals in animal farm, oblivious of the warped arguments.

  6. In Australia, we have Medicare levy (everyone pays, even temporary foreign workers) ~ 2%, and then, just because it is wise not to trust the govt., take out PRIVATE medical cover.

For most working people with family, this works out to around $4k per annum.

And then if you happen to still be a Singapore citizen, you kena Medishield. That's just part of the price one has to pay for FREEDOM. (aka "freedom" is not "free")

  10. Why China's GDP lower than the US but named the top economy?
The real value of RMB is big. One car maybe $10k but here more than $100k.
One good meal $10, here $50.
Other than the big cities, one house or flat cost half or less of what we pay here.
The Sing dollar is now so cheap in terms of real purchasing power.
Serious illness, pay hundreds of thousands or millions to get treatment when people in China pay a token.
China built one stealth aircraft for $1m, the US built one for $100m or more.

  11. Say whatever, a City with 70% Smart Voters will certainly fare well, not forgetting they are First World Citizens.
Not just smart, they are brilliant, so much so that PRC, US and Other Nation have much to learn from or at least copy Sin.

Sinkies must be proud of Sin.

  12. The gov is desperate and sick for wanting overseas sg who have to pay for another compulsory medical scheme overseas to pay sg medishield. Its never easy to obtain another citizenship so its not that people can just give up sg citizenship and swap for another one. people should have the option to opt out in such situation and if they opt out, they cannot be treated in sg. people sometimes go overseas because there is no better option within sg. why would people go overseas if sg is so good? the gov is out of touch with reality.

  20. @ jigg 1155:

    >> Actually those running this show are stupid MFs... <<

Err...the people voted them in. So maybe the people themselves are "MFs" or they just know that managers need to be hardcore and do what is necessary, not do what is popular.

    >> U ask the absentee Singaporeans to pay...they give up their citizenship n then be allowed to withdraw their cpf? <<

OK, there's a need to distinguish between ex-Singaporeans and overseas Singapore citizens. Ex-Singaporeans---they are out of the picture because they no longer have the state-to-individual relationship with Singapore since they are no longer CITIZENS.

Singapore citizens living overseas---that's a completely different matter: they are BOUND to the state and are therefore OBLIGED to obey the rule of law by the AUTHORITY of state they are citizens of.

    >> No overseas singaporean is going to come back for your multi ethnic, multi national, overpriced, under experienced health care services la.. <<

Oh yes they will and I will wager that they have. Obamacare is going to cost too much, many Singaporeans domicield in the US could be returning to Singapore for live saving procedures.

Same goes for Singaporeans living in "welfare states" whose medical systems are already straining from the weight of people still alive at 80 or 90-something, and the growing numbers of aging Baby Boomers requiring health services.

When these 'welfare' systems eventually run out of money and fail, Singaporeans will be flocking back for treatment.

I have lived as a Singaporean overseas for 40 years. And I pay heavy premiums for private health cover. I will BEGRUDGINGLY pay Medi-what-the-fuck in Singapore. Being an overseas Singaporean reaps ENORMOUS BENEFITS (low tax, excellent banking, good services), and Singapore is like a "hotel" to me---probably the best "hotel" in the world. For that reason I will pay to keep BENEFITING from this fucking awesome arrangement I have by having the best of many worlds!

So overseas Singapore citizens, pay the fuck up you stingy cunts!
