What can the govt of the people, by the people, for the people do?

I do not know how many Singaporeans out there are still trying to send out their resume looking for a job and after 6 months or a year or more and still could not land a job. I do not know how many are so stressed up, depressed and lost all confidence in themselves and how many are feeling so worthless and ashamed of themselves that they have withdrawn from society and hiding in some corners in despair. I do not know how many could have gone bonkers and how many just try to make ends meet with whatever jobs, temp jobs or part time jobs or manual labour jobs to get by.

Perhaps Gilbert Goh could dedicate a column in his Transitioning.org to list down the names of Singaporeans that are struggling for months or years and still unable to get a job. With the identity verified, the person can be identified with a pseudo name but with other details like qualifications, experience and duration of unemployment made known. Jobless and underemployed Singaporeans must be encouraged to put their names on the list. The numbers would get the MOM thinking.

The number of these unemployed and underemployed could be quite substantial while some silly Singaporeans are sneering at them as useless, too demanding or choosy or whatever shit they could shit on them.  Would someone want to do something to take care of these educated, some highly educated and experienced Singaporeans when there are more than 1m foreigners, many fakes and cheats, are having a good time here, fully employed, gainfully employed, over employed and depriving these Singaporeans from their right to be gainfully employed?

MOM could set up a task force to compile an inventory of these Singaporeans who are desperately in need of a decent job. Freeze approving Employment Passes and when an organization put in an application for foreign talents, send them a list of qualified Singaporeans for them to pick. Until these jobless and unemployed Singaporeans are employed, no approval shall be given for Employment Passes except on very highly skill jobs. In fact all the middle level management jobs should be closely monitored and given Singaporeans the first right of employment. Any job that a Singaporean can do should be given to a Singaporean.

And make it a law that the Human Resource dept must be headed by a Singaporean. New citizens of less than 10 years and PRs not acceptable to be head of HR dept. This would really help the Singaporeans left in the lurch and no need for silly and worthless talks of compassion and a caring and inclusive govt. And there will be no need for silly training courses to train to be underemployed. Make it happen, make it real.

Swee Say, what do you think? Can do or not can do?

PS. There are some glitches in Blogger and I can't get the font to the size I want. Those having problems can click on the gear like icon on top right of screen to change the size of fonts to your desire. 150% would be just right.

But which type of numbers really matter for PAP and MOM to think? The above hypothetical numbers by RB, or the real numbers in percent that came out on 11 Sep 2015, or rather in the early hours of 12 Sep 2015?

Tiok, there are many and they are hiding in some corners in despair, and dare not even go to Hong Lim Park to legally protest. That's why you do not know how many. Even if they had voted for opposition on 11 Sep 2015, they are only a minority of 30% or less.

  3. Right now I got this feeling about our fresh engineering graduates-- they are not very employable, in today's context.

That is not to say those in the past is very good.

In the past, when our wages are not so high compared to USA to Europe, there is a lot of redundancy headcount, and a lot extra headcount goes to hire fresh graduates, giving them training without drowning them.

Today, the team are lean, and everyone have specific roles. There is no headcount for fresh. If you cannot perform, get ready to be fired.

And why is that so? First, business cost too high, company want to cut cost. Next, everyone is asking for high pay, and high pay can only be justified by smaller headcount.

Also now our fresh grads are pitting themselves against FT with 20 years of experience. They have no chance.

One even more serious problem is the caliber our engineering fresh grads. In my time, we used to mock the arts fac people as dumping ground. Now Electrical Engineering is the mother of all dumping ground in Singapore, and electrical engineering is probably among the most difficult discipline in university, probably behind medicine or dentistry.

Engineers salary are low and unemployment rate high, so no one want to study electrical. Ironically we keep producing a lot of STEMI graduates as PAP believe we can be high tech by opening the doors wide on graduate enrollment. What we get is actually fuck up unemployable graduates.

That creates a problem. So many fuck up students in engineering school and the school start to cut syllabus, affecting the skillset and knowledge of the good students, who are already few.

In the end, even first class honors can be quite fuck up nowadays.

There is a destruction of the entire engineering ecology. I believe the only solution to rebuild our engineering is to create an elites engineering institution on the model of French Ecole Polytechnique.

Face it, PAP has too trivialize engineering and this is quite a difficult profession to do it real correctly.

  5. Engineering graduates should not look to engineering as a career to make money.

Just look at SGX CEO Loh Boon Chye. He is an engineering graduate (in fact his only degree) but he has his whole career in banking and finance and now as a Sinkie CEO of SGX. In fact RB even blog about him just a few postings before this.

Engineering graduates should look to Loh Boon Chye as a role Model.

  6. Loh Boon Chye is one lucky ass, but he got himself kick out from Deustche bank by FT Indians.

Today, even if you want to go to bank, its better to get a degree from obscure KNNBCCB univeristy in Pndeh India than the highly ranked NUS/NTU/SMU.

There is no meritocracy in Singapore, only caste system.

India high caste, the rest dalits.

  7. How good is the product of a university is relative and sometimes unreal, faked. If out local unis produced low quality engineers, it does not mean that other unis are producing good engineers.

Everyday I look at the young foreigners around MBFC or Raffles Place, I often asked, they have they got that our local graduates did not? I smell a rat. And the reason is not that they are cheaper. They are paid like Singaporeans.

  8. RB shd instead dedicate a column instead.
Instead of being a failure n kpkb claiming that our employers exploit Sinkies, causing our employees to lost trust on our local employers or discourage from taking up jobs, we shd encourage jobless to get themselves a job .Dun be choosy n lazy.
Its not MOM duty to guarantee Sinkies job.Garmen is kind to guarantee Sinkies a 2 year plus job but not many appreciate it.Free lodging , uniform ,cookhouse, food,accommodation...can sign on oso. What more do we want.

Is the Indian high caste system a "natural aristocracy"?
Is the Indian high caste system a "meritocracy" or a "married-tocracy"?
As a Chinese, can I join the Indian high caste system by getting an invitation to an Indian tea party?
If I am a millionaire, am I automatically a member of the Indian high caste system?

What is the difference between LKY's "meritocracy" and LHL's "natural aristocracy"?
What is the difference between the Indian high caste system and cronyism?

  10. Another big problem in engineering community is the commissar system of PAP. In ST, ASTAR, DSO, the upper managers are all SAF or former civil servant, and these parasites are parachuted to manage the engineers.

The engineers have no chance to get promoted and make good decisions.

These commissar who knows nothing and rely on feedback by the underlyings are perpetually insecure, make bad decision and poison the atmosphere.

They also take all the good jobs and good salary, and prevented good engineers from ascending to their rightful standing in society.

The clever engineers got to stooge among the commissar and offer them advise, be careful not to hurt their feelings or contradict the commissars. Engineers are inherently fucking direct, blunt and hones animals and facing such delicate piece of shit who care so much about face is painful and poisoning to the entire engineering culture.

    >> [...] depriving these Singaporeans from their right to be gainfully employed? <<

There is no such "right" to be gainfully employed. Any how hantam ah, uncle, shame on yew ;-)

The world doesn't owe any one of these ENTITLED CUNTS a living. So the moment to try to implement heavy quota-type policies, the private sector (where the growth and prosperity comes from) will just pack up and leave.

There is no viable "political" solution to this. The best which can be done is to legislate that all govt/ state jobs within a certain pay scale be staffed by local-born Singaporeans. Without a viable political solution is it then purely up to the INDIVIDUAL to choose and decide for themselves, how to proceed in an "unfair" world.

The world is UNFAIR. Put on your Big Boy trousers and stop the cry-baby shit.

  13. @ ALL

If you are waiting for the (useless) state to fix your lack-of-employment situation, you better bring some snacks and some reading material as you will be waiting for quite awhile.

There's a downward trend in the salaries for almost ALL graduates, and the trend is global. Many industrial processes have gone algorithmic, many more are to follow, plus the use of ROBOTICS is quickly changing the game.

To blame the govt or whatever for "lack of jobs" is a waste of energy and time---valuable resources which need to be conserved and focused on outcomes with better probability of rendering a direct benefit to the individual.

No one has ever succeeded in predicting the future with accuracy. As far as the govt. goes: The Sheeple get the govt they deserve. That will never change.

Do you think I am encouraged to hire FT Indians?
Do you think I know if the salary is even more expensive than Singaporeans?
Do you think I know if the work ethic, skills and knowledge is not so good?

Do you think I know that my FT Indian big boss wants me to train the FT Indians to eventually replace me, the remaining Singaporean?

    ----------------------------------------------------
The United States General Accountability Office reported more than 150 incidents from 2001 to 2006 alone of nuclear plants not performing within acceptable safety guidelines.

According to a 2010 survey of energy accidents, there have been at least 56 accidents at nuclear reactors in the United States (defined as incidents that either resulted in the loss of human life or more than US$50,000 of property damage).

The most serious of these was the Three Mile Island accident in 1979. Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Plant has been the source of two of the top five most dangerous nuclear incidents in the United States since 1979.
Relatively few accidents have involved fatalities

Once in awhile we get a Three Mile Island, a Fukushima Daiichi, or a Chernobyl....so fucking what? The rest of the time it's been cheap energy.

  27. Actually most E-pass foreigners are paid more than Sinkies.

How I know?? Coz I rent HDB and condos to these foreigners. Even for HDB, foreigners are earning about $10K-$15K for those renting whole units and supporting their family in S'pore.
For condos, their salaries either above $15K or they have fat housing allowances.
And these salaries are just their basic monthly pay. Haven't include their cash bonuses, stock options, generous benefits e.g. $5K housing allowance, $2K car allowance, $1K-$2K per child for private school, unlimited free GP & Mt Elizabeth / Raffles hospital for entire family ......
How I know?? Coz I get these foreign tenants to produce their letter of employment before I'm willing to rent to them.

    What say you RB?

I say rubbish. The foreigners and some silly Sinkies are using a few black sheep to tarnish the image of all Singaporeans. The majority of Singaporeans are pragmatic and hardworking people. That is how we built this country. The young Singaporeans may have a better life but not spoilt to such an extent.

If the foreigners are really so hard working, so smart then their countries should be first world, not slum world. And they need to come here to steal our lunch.

    >> it is the fault of Singaporean graduates who are too demanding. <<

"If you don't ask, you won't get". I would say the entire generation is DOOMED if these folks didn't have the "gall" to ask/ demand / insist. You must ASK, and you have to give it some ATTITUDE, and if you want the attitude and the message to be "congruent", you have to say it like you mean it.

Nevermind the fact that everyone tends to over-inflate their value...that's just human nature.

    >> The ask for high pay, stress free jobs, no weekend work, only air-com environment, not in the sun, many days leave and also they ask for when they can get promoted. <<

So what? Are you discriminating against them because you don't like what they say? Or can you put your own insecurities aside and "test" their claims.

Maybe some of them are really "rainmakers" and can bring in the Big Bucks Business to your company, and that's why they ask for the sun and moon.

    You don't fucking KNOW.
    You haven't fucking CHECKED.
You simply hung a label on these folks and committed their fate to the belief you already have in your head.

    >> If I have a company I too would opt for FTs who are leaner and meaner. <<

(ii) We need to see the real numbers of jobless Singaporeans and not rely on the figures given by the govt.

If the Transitional Org fails to act, anybody else can open a website where helpless Singaporeans can post their difficulties. I'll bet we will see a lot of interesting, eye-opening stories of what they are facing. I'll bet the traffic volume will cover the cost of operating such a website. --------------------------------------

Here's my answer."LOCAL FAKERS" are our own family members, we have to put up with them. We can't throw them out. At most we put them in an institution and even then, we spend tax money to feed them.

Foreign trash are from outside our country, we have the choice to let them in or keep them out. We also have a choice to boot them out if they have already entered. Only numbskulls do not understand this. So anybody who spouts such nonsense is either numbskull or I.B. (a not so clever I.B.)

For the record, not all foreign workers are foreign trash. To say so would be really zenophobic, but you usually see I.B. twisting words around. That's what they do. That's why I took care to target foreign trash and not foreign workers.
