TPP – Cannot tell you!

The Trans Pacific Partnership failed to conclude once again as the members could not agree on two items, dairy products and drugs. The 12 member countries would have to go back to get more inputs to sort out these two areas to come to a compromise. The problem with the drug issue is about the length of protection for exclusive rights to the manufacturers of drugs. The USA wanted 12 years but prepared to compromise at 8. The other countries wanted this to be 5 years. The US wanted to protect the drug makers and keeping the prices of drugs high and thus not available to people from poorer countries. In the case of dairy products, farmers of some countries fear competition affecting their livelihood.

What is important is not about their failure to reach an agreement but the secrecy of the agreements. What is so secret and why so secret they cannot be made known. Anything that cannot tell is dangerous and fearful. They must have things that they did not want the world to know, the people of those countries signing the agreement to know.

Now, is that comforting or frightening? Or it is a case that it is best for the people of the countries not to know? And the proponents of the TPP did not even bother to make any motherhood statement like the TPP is good for the signing countries and also for the people. Scare or not?

Like all con men, trust me, no need to know, it is good for you. Now who are the countries so happy and willing to sign a secretive agreement without telling their citizens? Would this be another form of CECA? The countries involved in the negotiation are Japan, Mexico, Singapore, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, Chile, New Zealand, South Korea, Peru, Australia, Canada  and the USA.

Cannot tell must be good.

  1. That's right. Anything that they cannot tell is dangerous stuff.

Najib is telling the Malaysians they cannot know who donated the 2.6billion ringgit and where it is now. Knowing is dangerous stuff, so it is better for Malaysians not to know.

Singaporeans are not allowed to know the extent of our reserves and that is also dangerous stuff. Who is going to know where the money is if something goes wrong? Ong Teng Cheong wanted to know and they put him to pasture. What makes us think that Nathan or Tony know what Ong Teng Cheong cannot know. Think about it.

  5. Why should they tell anyone about this agreement?
Going by the number of responses to this piece,
no one is particularly interested at all. No one
cares that a major trade pact involving many things
which are intrinsic to their life is going thru
with no one telling anyone what the heck is involved.
That for 5 years almost nothing has been said about it.
In Spore, we're so used to secrecy and being hazed,
to being kept in the dark about vital matters.

There was a hint of how drastic the impact could be
thru WikiLeaks nearly 2 years ago, but no one was
interested. No doubt there will be lot of jumping up
and down and cursing when people find they have to
pay for expensive name brand drugs, for one. It'll
be too late then. They'll just have to cough up for
the next 8 years based on current conditions. Or die.

And you thought a 70% vote for the PAP was disaster...
    Ignorance is bliss.

  6. RB

    Singaporeans are finished!
All focused on counting the vote.
No one pay attention to capturing all the names and IC of every name and compiling them out of all constituencies.

    No resource is it?
    No brain more likely.

Do a tally of the list and citizentry
and you will know why PAP not only
    "Win" but win consistently >70%.

    Haha ...good night folks!!

  8. PAP has a 70% mandate to tell or not to tell Sinkies, regardless of whether TPPA tell or nor tell.
