A mismatch between honesty and reality

“We have proven that together, we are greater than the sum of our parts,” he said. “Most of all let us celebrate how we journeyed from Third World to First, as one united people, leaving no one behind.”

Mr Lee reminded all that every Singaporean has benefited from Singapore’s progress.

“We are a nation of home owners,” he said. “Everyone has opportunities to improve themselves. Everyone can look forward to a brighter future.”

The above is the gist of Hsien Loong’s National Day Message to the people. I would expect many Singaporeans would be very pleased and grateful to him and his govt for taking the country so far and bringing wealth and well being to the people of Singapore.

A post in TRE under the title ‘PM: We will always have a bright future ahead of us’ drew many flakes and many negative responses. Let me just quote a few comments here.

  • PWP architect:

There is no future for the people if you continue to wield absolute power !

Unlike your father who while harsh, will never think of subjecting our lives and livelihoods to the mercies of millions of 3rd world migrants.

You cannot be trusted to have the blank cheque anymore.

You have become public enemy number 1 the day we knew of your PWP.

Instead of protecting our lives and livelihoods, your PWP has, and is exposing us to dangers and unacceptable risks.

Do you realize what you are doing to this once beautiful country your father and his patriotic founding members have worked so hard to achieve?

Do you realize that the people are not that daft to know that your PWP is a policy to fix the people – to fix them for giving you lesser and lesser votes?

Do you know why you are being despised by almost half the population, if not more?

You have destroyed our motherland … sad that you chose to treat us with contempt.

The above are just 3 of 128 comments posted with very strong words against Hsien Loong and his policies. How could these people be so negative about what is happening in Singapore? The recent National Day Parade to celebrate SG50 was all pomp and pageantry, something that made Singaporeans proud for what we have achieved over the last 50 years. Or could the commentators in TRE be just a very small minority who did not benefit from the success and growth of the country? Were they biased or simply blind and not able to see the great happenings and goodness in the country arising from all the good policies of the govt? Why so negative? Why couldn’t they see the bright future going forward painted by Hsien Loong and his team? Don’t they believe anything Hsien Loong said?

Is there any element of truth in these negativities expressed by the commentators? They did not seem to be nuts or ignorant people. They did not seem to be from IMH. Why is there such a mismatch in the perception of the future of Singapore?

What is the truth? Or is this a case of the big divide, where some are getting richer and richer while some are getting poorer and poorer? Maybe the answer will come from the result of the GE. If the majority of the people are benefiting from Hsien Loong’s govt and policies, he should go on to win this GE with a comfortable majority. Otherwise his majority will be reduced and he may find himself with a bigger opposition in Parliament, or worse.

We have perhaps a month to find out the truth.

I thought there were already many such comments posted on internet even before 2011? Because I have been reading the internet on such matters even before RB started his blog in 2005.

But what happened in GE 2011? And will it happen again, maybe with even better outcome for Hsien Loong, since the Hsien Loong of 2015, although still not good lah, that's why the above comments, is fairly speaking, a bit better than the Hsien Loong of 2011?

In fact, that's exactly what is happening. And Hsien Loong knows. How? Because being PM, he has all the data and info about Sinkies mah, like the IRAS records, how many new citizens minted, etc which is not available to RB.

So of course Hsien Loong is more informed and confident than RB lah, about PAP going to win this GE with a comfortable majority.

  10. Why are Singaporeans so negative? Why are Singaporeans so uptight about the immigration issue? According to the PAP government. FTs are here to create more jobs for Singaporeans. To a large extent this is true. So why are some Singaporeans so anti-FTs? LHL said in his speech that no one has been left behind. Every Singaporeans has benefitted from the PAP policies over the last 50 years. To be fair this is quite accurate. Most Singaporeans " own " their HDB flats. 99 years is a long time, and as far as the government is concerned it is a freehold. Singaporean children have good education and good medical facilities.

IMHO, Singaporeans have been having it good for the past 50 years. The PAP government has catered for every need of the Singaporeans, from their daily needs to their future old age. Economic circumstances have gradually changed over the years. What were good ideas and economic prudence, have now been outdated by changes of events and development in this new era. So why are some Singaporeans not satisfied with the PAP mode of governance? Maybe they are the small portion of the population which have been left behind. Sadly, I can understand their sentiment, because there are old Singaporeans folks in their 70s or 80s collecting dishes in hawker centres and there are these same folks collecting cardboard.

So, for the PAP government to say that no one has been left behind is not totally true. In any system one must never expect to have a 100% success. Few will fall through the cracks. The success for any system must be measure by the percentage of those falling through the cracks. In Singapore I feel the this percentage is relatively small when compared with other Asian countries. Therefore I must deduce tat the PAP government over the last 50 years have done a good job. Agree?

    Really ah?
If everyone benefited equally, then why you benchmark your pay against the top earners in Singapore? Why not the median or the bottom earners?

“We are a nation of home owners,” he said.

    Really ah?
HDB is the owner of "my" HDB flat not me.
Since 90% of Singaporeans live in HDB flats, and HDB owns the HDB flats.
This means only 10% of Singaporeans own their own homes.

“Everyone has opportunities to improve themselves. Everyone can look forward to a brighter future.”

The above sentence sounds rather incongruent and doesn't gel but if the word "TRE" is replaced with another word "@*#!&¥%μ`/[¿^/¿[\^°#@*&!"." ( aka the name of a lowly ranked publication ), it may sound more congruent. Mati may have meant that publication rather than "TRE" ? "指桑骂槐"?

  20. Nothing, no man or system is perfect.

Time will tell whether old man's wisdom is correct given the choice he made.

Devising a sustainable system that is able to withstand a diverse culture and an unstable and tumultuous world setting is easier said than done.

Will Mr Teochew, Aung Juan Soon Chee, Sonofadud, Temporary Tahan, etc able to say publicly they can design and build a system better than old man?

After 23rd Mar 2015, the coming month is the first (major) test how well the system old man built with his PG cohort can withstand a "STRESS TEST" without him around.

He probably was observing the parade in his seat but most if not all people cannot see his presence ......

Most likely he will be observing from where he is now how the system he has ( painstakingly and meticulously ) built carries on after he exited the scene .....

Not many men save old man and the cohort he persuaded to lead would want to be in his and their shoes in the 1950s through the 1970s.

If sinkieland does not do well, it is the collective faults of all sinkies. If the leaders failed sinkies, it was the sinkies who put them there. Who voted for them other than the sinkies?

Sinkies have to live with what they got.

However, with majority seats in Parliament and all PAP MPs toeing party line, nothing will change. Singaporeans will HAVE TO welcome more FTs to make up population up to 6.9 million or maybe more. Sorry to say, there is nothing Singaporeans who are against this policy can do about it.

  31. Forget education or even Schooling. In Singapore, the legacy is a good brainwashing. At least the British were too disinterested, too bochap, and thus let the locals depend on their own God given ingenuities survive. So we had Chinese Clans to help each other find jobs etc. Under the British "misrule" we developed our own culture, some form of independent press, and a diverse political discourse. More some reason very successful local entrepreneurs somehow emerged without the misguidance stat boards like the EDB/Spring/STPB. (How our economy have survived with their meddling is a miracle).

When the Brits left, the succeeding government took it upon themselves to impose their values, their world view on a populace used to thinking for itself. All of a sudden the government knows what is best, and they imposed it with ruthless efficiency. The result of 5 decades of efficient government? A homogenous population of automatons who neither excel in English or Chinese, and either can't think for themselves or are afraid to speak their minds. This led by a class of arrogant, Kate Spade loving, IGNOBILITIES. But, I concede this to the British, the Chicopek Pommie has a great track record of leaving despots to rule their former colonies.

  33. As NTD said previously, there are too much complacency (and the accompanying incompetence).

The system can do better with more spurs pierced into the hides of some of the drivers who have fallen asleep and shake them up from their deep slumber with bigger and harder slaps.

There are many areas, some urgently in need of fast and vast improvements. Many are not new issues, some being brought to the aristocrats attention in the past decades but fallen on deaf ears of frogs and see no-evil head in sand ostriches.

The political capital built up by the PG cohort may have been squandered and depleted since 1990 and real, fundamental improvements of employment opportunities, non-discrimination in work place by aliens, unnecessary wastage in unending upgrades that lead to steep price increases must be reviewed and moderated so that rent-seeking do nothing leeches do not conveniently pass price increase and heap all the burdens onto the peasants, enslaving most if not all for life.

Lao Goa's asset enhancement programme in the 1990s has set in motion a vicious cycle of huge transfer of wealth from every new job entrants to his cohort. The artificially inflated cost of living, housing prices, prohibitive cost and opportunity cost of starting a family are all indirectly the sound of the death knell of Sinkieland' s dodo in a gradual process not unlike the frog being cooked in a pot of warm water unable to jump out.

Sinkies going the way of dodo is inevitable when the cost to reproduce is stacked against them at prohibitively and excessively high level.

Indiscriminate conflicting policies that doom sinkies must to be corrected.

The aristocrats are not listening but likely to shed crocodile tears again to "swindle" daft sinkies to let them run rampant in their lives.

The end result could be another five years of marginalization of sinkies and the point of no return.
