Amos Yee – Heckling special needs children

When special needs children were in the wrong place, many cried outrage, vile, vile, vile. How can people heckled children with special needs? That was the kind of reactions from caring and righteous people out to protect special needs children. What a show of nobility and compassion.

Would a boy suffering form Autism Spectrum Disease be called a special needs child?  Would such a child need the protection of caring adults from wicked people out to do harm to him? Got diminished responsibility or not? Any clever lawyer wants to comment?

What if such a child is snatched away from his mother, pronounced mad and thrown into a mental hospital where serious mental patients are locked up? Is it vile? Is it the right thing to do? Is this to help the child, to protect the child, to save the child? What would a child affected by ASD ended up in the company of mental patients?

And the child is screaming for justice. Would anyone listen and offer a helping hand? While the child’s plea gone unnoticed, abandoned by the caring and righteous men and women with halos above their heads, a lonely mother cries. The world turned to look the other way.

First World or Third World?  What happens to human decency? Where are the people of kindness, the people of God or Gods, the angels and immortals?

After this shameful ordeal, would anyone dare to talk about moral high grounds, about righteousness, about kindness, about compassion, about a caring society?

And a mother cries.

  1. There is only ONE REASON why Amos should be a free individual: Freedom of speech and expression

Not because he has been diagnosed with ASD, and thus may be a "special needs" kid (Redbean). Not because he's a minor. (Roy Ngreng)

When you bring in "other reasons", you weaken Amos's arguments and his steadfastness in standing by his words.

You either stand for freedom of speech and expression in SINGAPORE, or you don't. There is no "in-between" compromise on this issue.

Take the above case: Not everyone has ASD, not everyone is a minor. So if someone else gets caught slagging off the authority, you may not be able to use those arguments, especially if the person is not ASD nor a minor. However if you stick by the idea that freedom of speech is a PRIMARY requirement for individual freedom and liberty in CIVIL SOCIETY, then you send a clear message to the authority and the government.

However, I stand by my claim that although it is important for driven individuals to campaign for free speech in Singapore, I have my doubts whether it will be possible.

Singapore is a place where the citizenry are still immature and do not have the emotional/ impulse control. If they didn't have an authority telling them where to live, what to study, when to shit, "the correct way" to be a good obedient Singapore citizen...the people would be LOST and RUDDERLESS if they were not "controlled" by their Elite Government.

"The Government" are actually from the same stock as "The People". And the culture dictates that Singaporeans are either too lazy/ scared/ unmotivated to think, decide and act for themselves, or can't wait to play fuck and cheat/ bully others so that they can get ahead by adopting "the ends justify the means" philosophy. Deep down, Singaporeans know the type of Singaporeans they themselves are.

Therefore they've chosen a government to rule them in the BEST MANNER WHICH SUITS THE CULTURE, using FORCE if necessary to "tekan people into line". Please lah, dear uncles and aunties, and you younger don't-know-shit-yet young fuckers: Singaporeans simply luuuuurrrrvvvveeee the idea of TEKANING PEOPLE into line!. This is straight out of the Lee Kuan Yew playbook.

The question is: Did LKY "invent" the tekan method of governance, or was it already a part of the culture? ;-)

  4. RB, as a start up owner stuck in the west. I genuinely cannot help but sympathise with that child's demise. And harsh as it seems, I feel like you are as good as the people that are putting through it.

Hear me out; in this mass media day and age it is truly the inaction of those who are willing and yet incapable of making the right difference that will define us.

I've been here a couple of times now and you come across to me as someone who has the right attitude and influence to make this slightly easier for that child. I'm going to have to call you out here and ask you - are you doing enough for Amos?

  6. Hi T, welcome to the blog.
Everyone one of us is like a drop of water. You can do just that much as a drop of water. Only when all the droplets of water get together to become a pool of water, a pond, a lake, a sea or an ocean, the water becomes something else.

No one, acting like a drop of water can do much. But everyone can do just that little bit within his means. And if everyone is willing to do that little bit, it will be enough.

Would someone close to Tan Cheng Bock knocks at his door and tell him to save Amos Yee?

How many Roy Ngerns are out there?

How many Amos Yees are out there?

Are the emergence of all the RNs, AYs in society to voice their views a sign of some serious underlying fissures simmering underneath the artificial glittering facade of this (man-made) mermaid ( merlion ) islandlet microstate?

Are the present methods of handling the RN and AY issues the only ways or the best ways or the right ways in the long terms interests of Singaporeans?

Or are there serious root causes in the (MOE) system that fomented up individuals like RN, AY and very possibly many, many more of them in the midst if this society bothers to be more observant?

It seems to appear that "tackling" RN and AY may be akin to trying to solve some symptoms than the real underlying illnesses in the system ......?

As far as the eyes can see and the mind can foresee, going forward, just like the casinos effect in the economy and society, the impacts of the current chains of events (many self created) may be an inverted J curve .......?

Who is leading who in this society?

Lions leading the donkeys and the rest or donkeys leading the lions and the rest?

  9. @ everyone:

    >> And if everyone is willing to do that little bit, it will be enough. <<

Yah sure. In a perfect world lah. Not just get the willing and able to "act", but also act for the good in the LONG TERM...which is nearly impossible, because human action is invariably chosen to be SHORT term. (minimum pain, immediate pay off)

I put it to you, supposing Singapore was aflame and burning to the ground, some will stay and fight the fire with their lives, other will flee as fast as they can to save their hides.

The ones who stay will label those who flee 'cowards and traitors". The ones who flee will label the one who stay as "foolhardy martyrs". The ones who stay say "we're fighting for our homes!" The ones who flee will say "We're fleeing for our lives!".

....and we're back to square one: the real world, imperfect but still awesome ;-)

  13. RB, final notes,

Your comment section seem to be a breeding ground for self righteous trolls.

I suppose what you said was neither selfish nor gracious of you - just factual. The very problem with the the pre-aging population (same gen that voted for PAP) in Singapore, too much logic and too little feelings. My generation had to go through what they class as "world class education" just so when I look up from help from the next gen, I get put off by snide comments like "Don't know shit yet fuckers" - ℳatilah_$ingapura.

We are a society, a nation. When your gen voted for PAP 25 years ago, did any one of you actually gave 2 shits about my generation or even the next? It hard to imagine someone anyone of you did by the out look of our country now.

Let's just say that because Russian government are against gays, doesn't mean all Russians are homophobic, there are people actually in Moscow still fighting for that simple basic human right that YOUR generation seem to not get at all. Peer pressure and social norms are powerful influences on behaviour, and they are classic excuses - Andrew L

  14. Just re-read that comment and I sound a little too involved. For that I will apologise...and mainly because I cannot find a way to delete it.

In hindsight, your blog touches on the right issues and pulls on the right heart strings (hence that comment). Guess I might be staying for awhile.

    If you don't mind.

What is so "snide" about that comment? I'm just being factual. You might have book smarts and even creative non-book wild imagination smarts, but you still don't know shit about life simply because you have yet to experience it.

So suck it up and grow a pair lah.

  16. P.S. A blog doesn't do jack shit, except foster the activity of (in your words) "self righteous trolls, which means 99.99% of people who write stuff on the internet. The internet is THE PLACE for anyone to vomit their opinion for everyone else to smell.

Anyway, back to my point: self righteous trolls and blogs---no matter how "well intended" don't change the world. HUMAN ACTION is what changes the world.

In Singapore, talk and write plenty, but in the field, singularly objective directed ACTION...nope, not happening.

    Whither the young people? ;-)

  17. We the silver brigade generation did support and vote for two generations of PAP that were good to the people. They deserved our support. Many had started to vote opposition long ago as the third and fourth generations are not worth voting for. They are mercenaries that did nothing good except for themselves with self serving policies. They are a bunch of asses.

It is not fair to blame the silver brigade for supporting the early PAP. They did good and brought us here but no one could know the new kids are going to destroy us and the future generations.

The silver brigade have changed sides and will vote wisely for ourselves and for you new generations. You people are most affected and should do the necessary.

    Good luck.

  18. Singaporeans response to such blatant abuses and criminal actions so far has been simply "voting them out" in the next election!

Rome is burning to the ground and the people will act some time in the future. What a DISGRACEFUL people.

  22. Hi T, just ignore Matilah Singapura. He is renowned as the jester here. And for your info, he is an addict and when he did not get his fix he would lose control of his faculties and start to mouth all kinds of vulgarities. He also shows signs of bi polar.

Two ways to dealt with him. Just ignore him. And do not try to be nice to him. Doing that will trigger him to become insane. That is why some bloggers here will instead fuck him when needed. He loves that.

    Cheers.

  25. Dear Redbean, thank you very much for your article.

    Somebody above posted this blog...

    https://matheliztic.wordpress.com/2015/06/30/dear-hk-student-leaders-dont-waste-your-time-on-singapore/

I disagree with the advice in that blog. HK students are not wasting their time. Nor are the Taiwanese, the UN institutions, the Penangnites. By supporting Amos, they have drawn the attention of the world.

Singaporeans who have any ambitions to work or do business overseas will now face a world that sees the Singapore population as lacking in morals and human decency. Foreign students studying in Singapore [Listen up, Harvard Singapore!] will also face the same suspicion when they return home - did they also lack the same morals when they see a young boy being raped in prison?

Singaporeans who keep silent thought that is the safest thing to do. They're so wrong. They're short-sighted not to see the whole chain effect. The Singapore reputation has now sunk to the same low level as the German population under the Nazis, who stayed acquiesce while the Nazis rounded up the Jews. Is it so hard to see how this damages the chances of Singaporean candidates seeking employment overseas? Or Singaporean businessmen trying to sell their products? We have been living in the past, when the Singapore brand used to be reliable. Get used to the future, when the Singapore brand stinks. The Singaporean used the be seen as honest, even honest to a fault - we don't even know how to cheat others. Now, we will be seen as having no morality or human decency.

Singaporeans who keep quiet because they are "kiasu" have to realise that they have plenty to lose. The actions of the HK protesters and those elsewhere will drive home the understanding that the spineless Singapore population have much to lose.

There will also be Singaporeans who question what I've written above, they think "why would employers bother?" Well, that will prove my case - that the world will look at these Singaporeans and wonder where are the morality and human decency of this population?

Ask yourself this simple question: would you want to employ somebody who has proven that he simply walked past when he saw a young boy being raped? Would you feel safe even to have him in your circle of friends?

  26. Agree with anon 10:46. The Singapore Brand is now a brand of shame.
