Garden By the Bay – Good value for money

I must say something good about this Garden or else people always say I say no good things. I will use the mathematical method to convince you people why this Garden is good value for the money spent.

There are many things in the garden that you cannot see here, and I am not just talking about miracles. Just take the average cost for a Singaporean travelling to Europe to have a look at the tulips or to the Mediterranean to see the olive. Instead of flying over there, you only need to pay $20, and you can walk in to the aircon comfort to see all the temperate plants and flowers right here.

How much would it cost to travel to Europe? Say $1,000. If 1m people were to travel to Europe to see the plants and flowers there annually, it will be $1b a year. Obviously the cost of maintenance for the garden would not be so costly, maybe $20m, or is it more? Immediately you can see the savings. Even if it costs $200m annually, there is still a $800m savings.

And think of the publicity generated by the Garden. If every now and then a miracle happens in the garden, it would appear on the TVs across the world giving free publicity, like the F1. The value is unmentionable. Just like the F1, it is money very well spent so that people around the world know that there is an island paradise called Singapore. There are still many people living in the deep of jungles and the hearts of deserts and did not know Singapore. Never mind if it is irrevelant whether they know or do not know of our existence. It is good for them to know. Maybe they can then come here as foreign talents.

We should have a few more of such gardens to show to the world and get free TV time. And our people can save their $1b and time without having to fly to Europe. Can take photos inside the domes to shoe they have been to Europe also. Just add a few cardboards of Eiffel Tower, Pisa Tower or London Bridge would be helpful.
$20 to see the flora and fauna of Europe in the comfort of airconditioning, like being there. So much money to be saved and more.

What do you think? My logic and arithmatic can jalan or not?

  1. Sir, I am very sorry to point out your glaring mistake here. Please don't scold me hor.

It is GARDENS BY THE BAY.

There are many gardens therein, not just one garden.

    Sorry, Uncle Red Bean, Sir!

    如果第一世界新加坡不是天堂 哪里是天堂?

    but...........was reported that
China and Thailand had signed an
agreement (about a week ago) to
    proceed with the Kra-Canal
    construction, cutting across the
    southern part of Thailand.....

    So.........What say U?

  3. Not to worry, people will come to visit the Garden By the Bay and the Jewel in Changi. Kra got cut or not cut no problem. These are iconic wonders that are must visit and must see. Tourists will flood this island of man made wonders.

  4. The Building of the Kra Canal is a matter of time. It shall have plenty of benefits for many countries around the Region. The Greatest benefit goes to all that uses the Canal and all those that caters to those using the New Waterway. Similarly in the Same Scale in benefit shall be Both Thailand and Malaysia. There shall be a CLEAR and EFFECTIVE DEMARCATION OF BORDERS AND MUCH EASIER CONTROLS OF BORDER CROSSINGS, LEGAL OR OTHERWISE. THIS SHALL MAKE SMUGGLING, ILLEGAL MIGRATION AND EVEN BORDER INCURSION UNDER CONTROL.

THE BUILDING OF THE KRA CANAL SHOULD BE SUPPORTED BY ALL INCLUDING SINGAPORE.

SINGAPOREANS HAVE EXTENSIVE EXPERTISE IN PORT MANAGEMENT AND MARINE ENGINEERING. THESE ARE ALL MUCH NEEDED IN THE BUILDING, MAINTAINANCE AND MANAGEMENT OF THE KRA CANAL WHEN THE PROJECT GETS STARTED.

Singaporeans should feel happy if the Kra Canal Project ever gets started, there are great benefits for all to share, including Singaporeans.

May the Project takes off as soon as possible.

  5. i have nothing but praise for GBTB. It is a fantastic integration of engineering, design, biology and earth science. The whole darn thing is ARTIFICIAL, CONSTRUCTED "reality"! The plants are real, but the environments and even their various "climates"---completely manufactured!

Fucking awesome! Plus, gentlemen, GBTB is a great place to meet chicks.

I can easily spend the whole day there. There's great coffee, can just chill out and read, after walking around taking it all in.

How much did they spend? I don't really care. I will pursue my selfish pleasures and enjoy every wonderful thing Hotel Singapore has to offer. Why not? Pay lah, enjoy!

  6. Don't worry. After S'pore become 27th province of China, everything will become good value for money. Not just the bay garden.

HDB mansionette flats will only cost $80K.

Instead of having to pay $500K for a tiny 120 square meters 5-rm HDB, you can use that $500K to buy a 1000 square meters bungalow.

China will soon build a causeway across the South China Sea linking S'pore to Hainan & Hong Kong. So shiok! Can't wait to fly China flag from my windows.

  7. RB... if somebody gave you a billion dollars and an operating loss of 100 million a year forever...would you be able to conceive a project like GBTB. It requires great minds cloistered in great places like the Cabinet Room to come up with such a plan...would any civil servant be daring enough to project such an expenditure? Look at all the great projects of beauty in the world...Great Wall,Hanging Garden of Babylon or Taj Mahal...were they projects of committes? or idealism of mad men...U just dont get it...do you....hehehe

  9. RB, I read this as another one of your satirical piece. Otherwise, it would look like you have lost your beans and no longer a human bean!

GBB like the soon-to-come Jewel is but a grandeur project by that megalomaniac to impress and entertain foreigners. What right- thinking local would spend $20 just to see tulips and enjoy a temperate climate for a brief spell? You can do it for free in any of our mega-malls and shop/dine at the same time. Do you have actual statistics of how many and how frequently locals visit it? Would GBB allow you to bring your camping gear and sleep overnight for an extended enjoyment of the environment? Consider also what happens whenever such mega projects suck the heat and expell all the hot air. It doesn't get transported into the stratosphere, but spread to our HDB heartlands to add to the haze and global warming. It's no wonder we have to turn on our aircons in order to have a good night's sleep nowadays and bear the increase cost of living! Curse him for his elitist projects! Very soon we average Singaporeans will be pushed to live underground!

  10. Our neighbour up north also like to show their twin towers whenever the opportunity arises.

We have more to show, like the durian, merlion, the garden, the casinos. We cannot lose to them.

We even tried creating mountains and molehills for boasting purposes, otherwise 'boh bin' when it comes to comparing size.

In Singapore we have several mountains eg. Mt Faber, Mt Sophia, Mt Pleasant etc. Then we also have hills - Bukit Timah Hill, Bukit Batok, Bukit Panjang. And not to forget the rivers. Quite a number of condos in Punggol have rivers in their names. Even a canal is considered a river in Singapore.

  14. RB please do not talk nonsense. Spending money and making Singapore attractive is not a bad policy. We need tourist dollars and the best way to get it is to make Singapore relevant and attractive. We must be in the limelight all the time and that is the way to attract tourists to Singapore. If you think the government is wasting money then come out with logical alternatives. Do not anyhow talk cock, OK????

  15. Anon 7:25, go check the cost of building the garden and the annual maintenance cost and work out the sums, how long to recover the capital and whether the revenue can cover the operating cost.
$1b to 2b have been sunk. How to recover this sum? How many tickets to sell over how many years?

  16. building a garden still better than spending on people because this garden cannot migrate tomorrow. it will root here, spend their whole useful live here, contribute and lure tourists in and then slowly dies off without even the need for expensive medical treatment.

I very curious. This government every people knows very clever. But why build only one such fantastic garden. At least want to build, build 50 lah. Can also celebrate SG50.

We want to see the accounts that shows that the money spent on Gardens By The Bay is well spent.
Unless you are saying PAP government can anyhow spend tax money and no need any accountability and transparency.

    Here's a logical alternative.
Spend the money on Singaporeans instead.
    EXAMPLE:
Why not reduce university fees for Singaporeans instead of giving away free scholarships to Aliens?

    But will this happen?
Is PAP an anti-Singaporean political party?
Is PAP a pro Alien political party?
    What do you think?

  21. RB @ 7.55

When tourists come to Singapore they do not only spend S$20 at the Garden by the Bay, they also spend on hotels, F&B and also other sights. You have only a very narrow view and think only of the S$20 entrance fee for the Garden. Wake up please and think out of the box.

    >> $1b to 2b have been sunk. How to recover this sum? <<

What a silly question. Of course the money is unrecoverable. GBTB is sunk cost, so just enjoy it. Complai for what? Money already blown lah. At least the fucking thing is NICE, heck no, it's AWESOME.

@ local 123: >> What right- thinking local would spend $20 just to see tulips and enjoy a temperate climate for a brief spell? <<

Exactly. The "value conscious" are welcome to their mega malls. The mall owners just love people to come and enjoy the aircon, and landscaped surrounds.

However there are those who enjoy art, creation and "nature", or the visceral experience of GBTB, and don't mind paying for it.

    @831:

    >> Unless you are saying PAP government can anyhow spend tax money and no need any accountability and transparency. <<

I absolutely agree with the idea. The govt have a mandate to govern. Governance and RESULTS should be the standards of how they are to be judged. Accountability and transparency---optional lah. Just get the job done.

And here we have the good ol' Singapore ENTITLEMENT mentality in all its glorious splendour.

Sorry, I'll have to disagree with you. I think my enjoyment of GBBT guarantees me enjoyment as a benefit. This is not just LOGICAL, it is fact. However "spending the money on Singaporeans instead"....er...how the fuck does that benefit me, and why should I care?

Of course I am entitled to something in exchange.
Unless it is the PAP government that has the entitlement mentality.

    Please lah!
Tourists have been coming to Singapore in record numbers even before the Gardens by the Bay were built.
The question is how cost effective is the stupid Gardens as a tourist attraction?

Kindergarten economics and management accounting also don't know how to do.
Are you a PAP paper general or admiral?
Or a graduate from the prestigious Mumbai University?

You see lah! First and foremost, The Gardens By The Bay was built with the tourists in mind ... using taxpayers' money.
It was never built with the intention of enjoyment by Singaporeans.
Does this mean that our PAP government is always ready to prostitute Singapore for the benefit of Aliens?
