Shhhh, super talents at work

Singapore is truly a nation of super talents or, ok, ok, let me be more accurate, a nation with a very small pool of super talents. Mind you, there are plenty of great ideas to learn from them, like making every ministry or minister an entrepreneur and thus making every ministry self sustaining. A very good example is the Ministry of National Development

If I want to be an entrepreneur, the most exemplary ministry to learn from is the business model of MND. For a start, get a piece of land as cheap as possible then call for tenders and let the contractors bid at the lowest price to build properties for sale. There is a slight twist in this from the business model of Singapore Land Authority. In the latter they would open tender for contractors to bid for the land at the highest possible price to take the first bite of the cherry. I think HDB also got their land at a good price from SLA.

Now, after the contractor won the contract to build flats, let them outsource whatever jobs they want to the cheapest service provider. Not my problem as a super talent. Actually my job is already done once the tender is given to a contractor. All I need to do is to wait and shake leg and twiddle my thumbs. When the flats are completed, actually no need to wait till the flats are completed, I could immediately authorise the housing agencies to start marketing the flats. All I need to do is to determine how much profits I want to make per flat. And the housing agents would work furiously to sell the flats for me in advance.

By the time the flats are built and sold, I just collect my profit and don’t even have to say thank you. The biggest talent involved is to tell the buyers that the flats sold to them are very affordable. Better still, tell them they are getting it at a big market discount and see how happy the buyers are. Bought at a discount! What choice have the buyers?

But that is not all. The supreme talent is to tell the buyers that I am losing a lot of money building and selling the flats. You know I did not lift a finger on a single piece of brick. Nevermind, as long as they pay me for the flats and believe that I lost money, that is good enough. This losing money part will make them feel so grateful to me, like I am a philanthropist, or like the merciful God that came down from heaven to do charity, to help the people.

How much it cost me to build the flats, no one knows. How much I made from the sale of the flats, no one knows. They only know that I work so hard to build flats for them and lost so much money. Next time if I raised the price of flats, they will be very understanding. They will convince themselves that my prices are really cheap, even selling below cost, so raising the price a bit will only reduce my big losses. They will understand.

See how talented I am? Or is it the other way, the buyers are just too daft to know what is happening? I am a genius.

  1. Also LTA, just print a piece of scrap paper costing 80 to 100k to register your car.

Then ten years on, have to renew based on current bidding which may costs up to 30 over k for five years and 60 k for ten years.

For five years, no further renewal.

Later pay road tax and all ERP charges which can be tee tee twice or thrice in same zone. Now day and evening no more just working peak hours.

No need yo even have a manufacturing plant for manufacturing the vehicles.

All thanks to MBT who is a supper talent and now followed by his predecessors who tried to updo him.

Twenty. One months bonus not enough, must AIM for thirty months or else upset my lifestyle.

  6. Nothing wrong to make some reasonable profit.
High prices is good as this will stop the children from staying away from their parent.
Sad to see many newly wed couples applying for flat once getting married .Ended up neglecting their parent ,less hard working ,buying car and travel for holidays instead of producing babies.
With unaffordable flat children will have to work harder and kwaikwai stay with their parent.
Dun be a daft to think getting married must get a new flat especially when its not within budget.

My Ah Kong suateng land can be built into at least 10 blocks of flat.Resettled with 200k his grandchildren have to buy at least 20 flats.
20 flats cost at least a million. He never complain becos its a sacrifice to our country so that more people can own a home.
Its selfish Sinkies who buy sell buy sell that make housing expensive and even cause a levy.
For our Ah Kong sacrifices , prices for 4 room that is bought at then 50 k should be sold at least 500k today .New flat should cost more than that.
Dun be a daft to ask for cheap flat and think they only think of profit.Even so.Whats wrong with making more$.

  10. The idea of "super talents" is a wonderful romanticism, usually based in ENVY by those who dare not try, or who gave up too easily.

The hard truth is more likely that people who succeed work bloody hard, have failed many times, have stuck with it over a long enough period such that "good luck" finally smiled on them.

I suggest you get out and hang out in one of the MeetUp groups where young entrepreneurs convene. There's plenty of HEALTHY entrepreneurial action taking place in awesome Singapore, mostly by un-super, not-very-talented people although they have passion, a willingness to learn, enthusiasm, courage and all the other attributes your grandparents told you about but have since forgotten.

I have to agree with RB here: the mother cuntry's culture is NEUROTICALLY FIXATED on thei super-talents nonsense. It is a form of creepy idol worship by the stupid, gullible and arrogant.

    Got old-fashioned values?

  13. Envy? Actually we feel sorry for the sad lonely old man behind his key board in his darkened room playing with his small tool and massaging his inflated sense of self. We all know who that is. No need to own up.

  14. Super talents or just normal talents will not lose monies. those who did are corrupted, dirty, greedy officials - fond of sleeping on the jobs, busy playing with mistresses, helping themselves to taxpayers monies, paying themselves millions etc.

(I love kittens and little babies
Can't you see that's the guy I am?
And your money is so safe with me
You never met such an honest man

    Glossies on my office wall
The rich and famous, I know them all

Come on and do the money shuffle
I've got you right there where I want you
Come on and do the money shuffle
Can't find your money if you want to - Richard Thompson - The Money Shuffle Lyrics)
