LKY – Two articles drew more than 200 comments in TRE

Two articles, “Disrespectful to say LKY doesn’t deserve to be an MP” and “Ungrateful to criticise LKY” have attracted 131 and 97 comments so far. The gist of the discussion is about the amount of money paid to LKY as an MP. Some were not happy that LKY was only paid $16k as an MP and there were criticisms that he should not even be paid that amount, two different and opposing schools of thoughts.

Is respect to a person all about money? And how much should LKY or other ministers be paid to be respectful? It would be nice to look at the full picture instead of just talking about the last drawn basic pay. To really appreciate what is going on, perhaps someone could collate the gross sum of money paid to the top 10 ministers over their full career as politicians and ministers.

The final sum should include everything that is legitimate and legally paid to them as politician/ministers, ie basic salary, bonuses, allowances, and other legitimate and official appointments associated with their political office. This would take some time and a lot of effort but definitely would not take 56 man years.

Leong Sze Hian and company have a job cut out for them to settle this issue for the people who are showing respect and disrespect to the top ministers. At least the people would know how many millions have been paid to each of them and whether these are respectful relative to their contributions to the country. Blindly screaming paying LKY $16k a month is uttering rubbish and totally out of context. And to make judgments based on this miserable $16k pm as a measure of respect or disrespect is for the simple minded.

What do you think?

  1. In Singapore, the local culture dictates that you are defined by how much you earn. Just face the fucking facts lah, you wimp-losers...you cannot fight culture.

If you earn big money, then you've earned the right for people to kow tow to you and lick your balls and around the erotically-sensitive parts of your anus -- in the hope that with every slurp of their greedy tongues they'll get some of "The Essence Of Suck-cess" such that this magical essence will transform them into a person as awesome as yourself.

Therefore it is quite within the context of Singaporean culture that the govt pays itself enough money so that the people cower in awe and disbelief.

I defend the govt. high salaries. They have earned every cent of their pay.

Why? Because you, The People, are fucked in your collective head and will swallow bullshit without question like a bunch of desperate crack-whores swallowing the cum of their $20 Johns.

Get on your knees, useless minions!

  2. Sad to say, all these 'well-taken care' treatment to LKY didn't translate to better treatment of the aged senior citizens as a whole, whom you can see many still struggling for a living if you eat often at hawker centers.

If you're not the rich and powerful ones, Singapore is a shitty place to retire in. That's why I don't blame those people who carry blue ICs refusing to change them into pink ICs.

  9. 16K for doing no work? Hard to justify. Not even on past glory or contributions!
Why does this old man still want to cling on to this position? Surely not because of the money. His law firm can give him much more than that!
The sight of him being propped up for public viewing actually does more harm than good. And it invites legitimate question why public fund is expended for an questionable purpose.
Similar question was also asked at the Woman Tennis Finals in Singapore.
Why were two of our finest Ministers flanking a sweating tennis star in the closing ceremony? I do not see this being done in other country.

  10. Maybe WP is keeping quiet about all these things for a good reason. Time is not ripe to talk about them.

  11. Following Zhuge Liang's death, the Shu forces quietly withdrew from their camps while not revealing news of Zhuge's death.

Sima Yi was convinced by the locals that Zhuge Liang had died, so he gave chase to the retreating enemy.....

Common folklore tells of a double, or a wooden statue, disguised as Zhuge Liang, driving Sima Yi away in this incident. Another folktale tells that Jiang Wei dressed up as Zhuge Liang.

In any case, word that Sima Yi fled from the already dead Zhuge Liang spread, spawning a popular saying, "A dead Zhuge scares away a living Zhongda (Sima Yi's courtesy name)" (死諸葛嚇走活仲達).

  13. Folklore aside, the Man has an aura. It is distinctive and strong, despite his ruthlessness and intellect, the Aura induces much respectability and even fear. Nature endows him well and some rever him though not all.
Lee Kuan Yews' Reputation and or fame shall stay for a while, however, history shall not just reflect his calibre, his deed will be weighed in too. Hard to tell if he will leave a good name and the Name shall bear upon his successors(kins).

It is quite obvious that his Son Lee Hsien Loong does not possess similar characteristics. As a Prime Minister for two terms now and MAY even goes for a Third, Hsien Loong has effected the Image of Lee Kwan Yew.

Reward the Man as much as possible whether due to the Office he holds or as apppreciation. There is no doubt that he will leave it to others for there is no way he can use much of his fortune. So, do not begrudge his dues and rewards.

  14. By all means calculate the entire amount he's earned. It's not just the amount that needs to be calculated. Will a calculation also be done to reflect the worth of the money earned earlier in today's context? That is, how much would $1,000 in 1965 be equivalent to today? $5k, $6k.

And don't forget to throw in his pension and all his other benefits, such as being able to order a completely outfitted plane to fly his sick wife back from the UK - for free - because she wasn't being attended to At Once. How much is the ability to ask and Get that worth? How much is power and prestige worth?

Why does he need to work anyway? He could have pursued interests he is supposed to have given up to rule Spore. Or did he not give up anything to rule Spore? Is he so one-dimensional that all he is is a political animal? Legends are surely more than that.

Whatever it is, it is puzzling why the rules LKY applied to others don't apply to him. That is, no work, no money etc etc! After all, he has been living by His rule - nothing is for free. So his name, his reputation is not free. However, others are doing his MP duties - and have been for more than a decade.

It is also puzzling why at 91 he still needs so much money - he is getting a pension and directors' fees for GIC for eg. Not enough?

Is his family not able to support him? I note there were no pix of a Family celebration of his 91st birthday. Was there one? Wouldn't a pic of that have given family bonding a boost? Are we not allowed to see him as a man, a father, a granddad? Would the legend be so easily destroyed? Or is he an empty shell behind his political front? Is he really a puppet as portrayed at his party's 60th anniversary? My god, his son stood a clear 5ft away, as if his father had some communicable disease.

Whatever it is, that pathetic picture seemed to indicate that the PAP is nothing without LKY.

If LKY needs money badly, he can sell his house, as other old people have been advised. It is worth a pretty penny, even though property prices have dribbled down a bit. He should also live within his means. Again, this is advice the rest of us get.

Mind you, I don't dislike him. He did a good job as the face of Spore. He was very persuasive and a fantastic speaker. I am particularly grateful for all the trees and greenery he was gungho about. But this, which I consider his best contribution, is now being destroyed! Wholesale.... It is being totally trivialised.

Whatever it is, he is not god, he is not even of the same calibre as say Gandhi. And we should stop treating him as if he is. Stop insulting him with the terrible fawning and ass-kissing that he's being subjected to.

  17. Having Great Power is similar to a man riding on the back of a Tiger. Once a person managed to stay on top, people around him will fear him, partly because of the tiger.

Unfortunately, the man on the back of the tiger cannot dismount. He will be eaten by the same tiger that gives him power.

    Sound familiar?

Maybe the PM and ministers in the above scenario can even be Teochew Ah Hia or Hainan Ah Ko if their parties are ready to be govt?

Or for that matter any Sinkie too, if they lead a party which is ready to be govt?

    If this is true;
I guess maybe it's no wonder PAP Ministers think Singapore has the best healthcare system in the world.

I always thought PAP Ministers have to queue at the A&E just like everybody else!

  32. I would like to know who pays the salary of the person who stands behind him and props him up everytime he needs to stand. This person should be paid from Lee's own salary and not incur additional taxpayers' expenditure. We want transparency please.

I'm sure the govt will not agree to grant WP's MPs any additional funds for servants to hold up their bodies, right?
