Brighter prospect for cleaners
Some years ago this guy came to me for advice on his career path. He was going to take up the job as a cleaner and he wanted to know if there was any prospect in this job. Yes I called it a job, not a profession and I could not really see any prospect in the job except to become a supervisor if the company was big enough. I had a bit of difficulty explaining to him about a dead end job or a job with dim prospect.
Today I could be more optimistic and could tell him to take up the cleaner job. The prospect is brighter. A new law will be introduced to pay cleaners a minimum salary of $1,000. Four figures you know. And the prospect of $1,600 as a supervisor. Cleaners will also be sent for training to improve their skills and probably higher salaries. There will be a career path for them.
From a HR point of view I would like to develop an organisational structure for the cleaner profession for the big companies. Organise them like the army with section leaders, platoon commanders etc etc. If big enough, can even have a cleaner general at the top of the pile.
Things are changing. Poly grads, interested in becoming cleaners? Just kidding. Poly grads prospects are even better. Could look forward to join the Admin Service or maybe become a politician and a MP or minister.

I am very very happy for the
ReplyDeletecleaners.....
Finally they are decently paid....
I hope this salary adjustment is
just the start and not the end.....
Cheers, uncles and aunties......
Poly grad be minister? U forgot about the O level results comparison years back. U think still hot chance? Don't anyhow advise people ok, u have to be responsible for the rest of his life
ReplyDeleteanon 9.09am......pls note
ReplyDeleteOf course everyone with or without paper qualifications can become ministers if they have the HEART for people.
Look at other countries, even film stars can also in high political offices.
Chiam got so so O level. Mah got straight As. Who do you think would make a better minister?
ReplyDeleteIt is not about "prospects". Lets be realistic here. What sort of prospects does a cleaner have? Even if say increase the pay to $1200-$1400, what can that do in Singapore?
ReplyDeleteIncreasing to $1000 to me, plays a part whereby daily subsistence living is more of use. For an old folk, if they have payouts from CPF or savings or children, this $1000 can better supplement what they have. For a foreign worker, it means more money to send back to the family.
But please, don't call this "prospects". Swee Say included.
Daft Sinkies live like a toad in a coconut shell.
ReplyDeleteThese basic 1 K will only benefit the foreign workers and will only encourage more foreign workers here as a cleaner or even cleaner in the name of construction general workers.Sleeping on the job oso 1 K.
I am more concern that our elderly may lose job because of this PW which may back fire.
And cleaner, galang guni men ,garderner etc can become millionaire easily and make more than scholars if they are willing to work hard ,have some connection and luck.
Who say cleaner can only become supervisor?Have some entrepreneurship and think big lah.
Become cleaner towkay can or not?
Just follow the PAP Millionaires;
ReplyDelete- their children got become cleaners or not?
- their children got go to polytechnic or not?
- do they cut their salaries so that they can become cheaperer, betterer and fasterer?
There are ex-cleaners that become bosses of cleaning companies, employing lots of foreigner talents, getting all gov cleaning contracts. Maybe they discover some secrets when cleaning.
ReplyDeleteNew get rich scheme -> be a cleaner and discover a MP having affair or doing threesome in the office. No one asking why certain cleaning companies kept on having their contracts renewed despite increasing of charges?
