Eugene Tan and Roy Ngerng not selected as NMP

This is the new talk of the town. For Roy Ngerng, the writing was on the wall and is a non event. For the effable professor, many have kind words for him and would consider him worthy of a second term. His dropping is sending all the jaws dropping as well. For all the NMPs, Eugene is one that has made the most impact in Parliament, dedicated, consciencious, and I think perfect attendance. He is like the teacher’s pet, the class monitor, everything exemplary. Everyone is expecting him to be rewarded with another term.

Well, he was not in the new team. Why? Did he not say or do the right thing as a NMP? Many people are asking why such an industrious NMP was dropped? He is about everything that you can ask for in a NMP.
In my view he is deserving of better things. He is good enough, or many times deserving as an MP. The alternative parties should queue up to make their pitches to him to bring him on board. For sure he would not be absent from Parliament sessions. For sure he will take his job as an MP seriously. But these are not the only thing good about him. He has a good mind and a very decent man. At least that is my impression of him as I did not know him personally.

Oh, maybe he is being dropped but already invited for tea and would be slated as the next candidate. Now, I would say this is a good reason to drop him from being an NMP.

It is already reported in S***S TIMES during recent interview he " still doesn't know how the tea taste like ".

Meaning he is not invited lah.

Btw, YEW can be better informed if YEW look it from an Economics angle, demand and supply.

How many defenders do YEW need in a soccer team?

  2. I think Eugene Tan abstained from voting in the Population White Paper.

  3. If not invited to tea, it is obviously dumping by PAP.

  4. However, ST is giving a conflicting signal. By giving him such a prominent coverage, suggestion is that he is favoured by ruling party.

  5. Part 2:

The present cabinet already has TWO legal heavyweights and former SCs.

In the backbench, YEW have a few more heavyweight SCs as well.

Could ET being " dropped " becos he "pointed" out too many "mistakes " during parliamentary sessions?

At least on 7 occasions between 2012 and 2014 he stood up to remind parliament there was no quorum and thus NOT CONSTITUTIONAL for passing of Bills?

YEW dun know how to play the game?

YEW dun know cannot be too forthright and tell the emperor he is not wearing anything?

YEW dun know in the game it is not a matter of "会做事" but "会做人"?

  6. Alamak, Eugene Tan should join an opposition party lah, although the party may not be ready to be govt to effect the changes he want.

At least being an elected opposition MP is more respectable than being an NMP, tio bo?

    1. As NMP point out the shits the ruling astrocrats had performed in Parliament already not nominated for another term.

Join opposition party to contest in coming election??

Must be out of your mind! See what happened to those eho oppose the PAP.

They are small people with vengeance in their hearts. They knew how to fix you properly.

Put your hard earned status quo of what you have today and your comfortable life to flee like a bankrupted fugitive??

  7. Part 3:

Also now in the cabinet, the MTI "invisible ministar " is non-economics trained but mb just a "wannabe" in charge of trade?

The rest like kee chiu, "mom-my" boy, etc do not have a single day work experience running any real private sector big corporation or anything to show about running the economy since day one of their careers.

The other economics trained fellas in the team may have "hardened brain cells " and hardly capable to "rescue" the "sinking sampan " ........ otherwise any good ideas or strategies would have been implemented?

  8. "Many people are asking why such an industrious NMP was dropped?"
    RB

If Tan Cheng Bock was not even invited for NDP 2014, any surprise why Eugene was not selected for NMP again, which is a far more weighty matter than attending NDP?

  9. Part 4:

What do YEW think is the gravest challenge facing SINKIELAND now?

To borrow from ex US President Bill Clinton' s 1994 famous slogan: "It's the economy, stupid."

Look at the profile of the new 9 NMP members?

Prof Eugene Tan preferred the tea-tarek from the usual friendly and brotherly mama coffeestall.

  11. Part 5:

    So YEW have it!

The flavour of the day or the theme for the next two years plus till 2016, early 2017 will be 80% about economics?

PROF ET may find better demand in other parties?

Rb, YEW may want a backup economics team for policies, views and even research but of course pro bono lah going forward until 2016/ 2017?

It may give YEW a sharper edge and more analytical fire power and sound and assured discourse in economics issues?

As YEW know, in economics cannot "anyhow hantam " and "乱乱讲"?

SPP also has a nascent informal think tank in this aspect, isn't it?

Commenters may do better also getting a good grounding in economics?

For a start, how about reading the works of French economist Jean Baptiste Say, Bristish economist John Maynard Keynes and Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto?

That should give more sound bite in understanding fundamental economics and comment more constructively?

    Just a gentle suggestion. 没有恶意.

Pinky is on power for too long, stadying in the ivory tower and therefore out of touch. Need to remove few more GRCs for him in 2016 to wake him up.

  18. Reply to Anon. 9.02am. Yes, Eugene Tan abstained from voting in the Population White Paper. He talked against the PWP but in the end abstained. What a hypocrite, a person with no stand, just to curry favour the government. It's good that he is dropped.

Rb, YEW have given a skewed and too narrow definition but no point arguing about it.

LEEMEMBER, the late ex-DPM GKS graduated from LSE in economics. Was it that bad under his economics stewardship until 1984?

Real Economics wisdom does not advocate eat, shit and low value-add economics strategy for a small geographical city state.

Are YEW sure those in charge of this island are economists?

Old man is a trained lawyer, "young man" is a mathematician, MTI "invisible man" is engineering trained, "kfc" also not economics trained.

Are YEW saying some other people is in charge of this little island?

Maybe your good "pal" Raymond knows better?

YEW want seek his "insider knowledge"?

Anyway, it would be good if a CHINESE SINGAPOREAN economist like the late DPM Dr Goh Keng Swee is in charge of SINKIELAND.

Real economics covers plenty on sustainable supply side economics, welfare economics, income inequality and other measuresment of quality of living standard other than pure GDP numbers.

As often, whether in law, medicine or economics, people who are too "smart" applied their knowledge to further personal gains disproportionately than altruistically.

But in present day policy making, it is more like those going for quick gains than anything with fundamental economics sense.

In the real world and politics, especially current setting, it would be CONCEDED that any sensical economic proposals WHICH INCLUDE BENEFITING THE MASSES would be "manipulated" and "hijacked" for "more than maximum gains for their own kinds"? The masses are likely to get the bones?

Thus, benevolent rulers are the exception than the norm since time immemorial?

In the end, online kpkb may just matter marginally and not materially as pointed out by one regular commenter in this blog?

  20. Remember lawyer Siew Kum Hong? He asked all the right questions, probed the right places. Probably didn't sit well with the ruling party. Maybe they wanted this NMP to have new faces each time to introduce colour in parliamentary sessions.

Your guess is as good as mine.

  21. Hi Anon 10:43, GKS might be an economist, but his policies were not based on economics alone.

And some may not be economists but their policies were solely based on economic considerations, ...economic growth, and economic growth and economic growth and nothing else.

    Did I answer your contradictions?

Rb, that's what I implied as well.

No contraditions if YEW take it magnanimously and with open mindset ......

Oops, did YEW feel offended again?

This is just online kpkb right?

Somebody must have realised up there running a society without being economics trained but on eat, shit, low value-add instant tree, instant gratification economics is fast approaching the end of the road?

Thus the need for some real stuff similar to GKS policies approaches but NOW TOO LATE?

RB, anyway back to the theme in your thread.

There is quite likely another reason and possibly nothing to do with ability, industriousness or potential contribution.

In Chinese astrology, Prof ET could be a "dog" ......

On the other hand, "dog" 冲 "DRAGON".

So those born "dog" unlikely have high chance in the foreseeable future as far "political office" are concerned.

Count how many born in the year "monkeys" and "rats" amd how many born "dogs" in "THERE" and YEW might see some pattern.

    天机不可泄露。

Of course there are other considerations in astrology. Can only say this much here ..........

    ReplyDelete
  24. Rb, your favorite "poster or mom-my boy", though born 1969 but becos it was before " 立春", he is still considered born in the year of monkey (1968) in Chinese astrology.

Another dark horse in the team is born in the year of the rat.

He is the youngest among the 4G ministers and SMS.

There are others too in the team.

    Can spot who are they?

  27. I think RB should be nominated NMP. If I were a Singaporean I would surely nominate RB for NMP. I am certain RB will ask all the right questions and chiochiok a little here and there. Speedwing.

    ReplyDelete
  28. RB will not be selected even of nominated.

He may ask the right questions and chiokchiok a little here and there and therein lies the crux of the issue.

The pertinent question is whether he is with them or against them and that is what matters in selection.

  29. After Eugene Tan became a NMP, his feedback becomes more neutral and in touch with public sentiment. Yes, agree he deserve another term. Think he is out of favour because he becomes vocal of the govt. Recently when he question transport minister Liu over SIA flight path, Liu facial expression was for all to see over TV - irritated and angry. He dismissed Eugene Tan and die die must defend SIA irresponsible risk taking flying over Ukraine.

  30. What makes a good NMP?
    - Should he ask difficult questions that may make the PAP government look bad?
example: Eugene Tan & Siew Kum Hong

    - or should he just smile and look good?
example: I don't want to say who lah. You know and I know ok already lah.

Which two types of NMP have gotten re-elected for a 2nd term?

    Is it true?
The purpose of an NMP is to give the perception that "diverse views" are being heard in parliament?

    ReplyDelete
  31. In the first place, only the PAP wanted us to believe that with NMPs in Parliament, they will give 'diverse views' a hearing in Parliament.

How many of us really believe that this is true? Not me for one.

Who selected them? Did Singaporeans clamour for their inclusion, or was it a creation thought up by the PAP to, as many had envisaged, give voters the imporession that there is no need to vote for opposition MPs? You know the answer, as well as why GRCs were created, boundaries redrawn every now and then and election rules fiddled around.

  32. Special Select Committee on Nominations for Appointment as NMPs
    --------------------------------
Meet the 8 people who decide who should be a "Nominated Member of Parliament".

    - 7 of these people are PAP MPs.
    (including PAP Ministers)
    - 1 is Low Thia Khiang

So is it fair to say that Nominated MPs are chosen by PAP MPs ??

    ReplyDelete
  33. It's very obvious lah, Eugene was dropped simply because he did not display any "yes-man" qualities. But he is precisely the type who deserves to be in parliament, sharp, intelligent, articulate without being brash or confrontational. In the next GE, he can stand anywhere under any banner, he'll win without lifting a finger. This man is a talent that even the blind can see !

    ReplyDelete
  34. Eugene Tan, no problem lah. It is better to be from the outside pissing in, than from the inside pissing out.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The special select committee for nominations for appointment of NMP had 7 PAP and I WP members. It is a no brainer to think that even if that 1 WP member voted for or against, will he be able to make a difference?

The question is - why must there be 7 all PAP MPs in the committee? The answer is obvious and the 1 token WP member is just to pull wool over Singaporean's eyes once again. The result is whether all the 8 memebrs of the committee are PAP MPs or 7 of them are is just to fool 60% of the daft Sinkies.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Even the "diverse voices" in parliament must be vetted & approved by PAP.
Like that how can the voice be "diverse"?

    Typical PAP.
And this is how they are running Singapore also.
That is why, any screw up ... you can safely say PAP is to blame.
When you want to control everything.
Then you are also responsible for the screw ups as well as the success.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Maybe, diverse in the sense that humans speak differently from cows, hens and horses. At least that is what they think Singaporeans are really as daft as that.
