Ebola – Are we safe?

With our open leg policies, are we safe from Ebola? MOH said Singaporeans should not be alarmed as the transmission is by direct physical contact of body fluids. Also ‘there is low travel connectivity to West Africa, where the current outbreak remains limited to’.

Just don’t be alarmed, which means what? There is little connectivity from here to West Africa. But there are indirect connectivities to West Africa by travelers from all over the world. The disease is posing a health epidemic across the whole world. Every country is alarmed and raising checks and quarantining travelers.

Pray it doesn’t hit us. Our jam packed trains are not going to be very helpful if one joker is affected. Remember Murphy’s Law. Pray, pray hard.

PS: This is the scary part.

'The incubation period of EVD varies from 2 to 21 days. Patients are not known to be contagious during the incubation period but become contagious once they begin to show symptoms which include sudden onset of fever, weakness, muscle pain, joint pain, headache and sore throat. This can be followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, stomach pain, red eyes, impaired kidney and liver function, and in some cases bleeding. There is no vaccine or specific treatment for EVD.' 1. Rb, they also said it is safe to fly ove Ukraine mah and SIA flew so many times over what. So when they said do not be alarm, u need to be scared. Many people fly from Africa then to singapore also so the rubbish talk about direct connectivity does not hold. Bunch of idiots. With that kind of thinking u need to be very scared Tio Bo?

  2. More scary news posted by a blogger, 'Do not trust the pig' no puns intended, as a comment in TRE.

'Right now in West Africa the worst Ebola outbreak in history is in full swing and is jumping borders at an alarming rate. Already it has spread to four countries, Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and now Nigeria. This latest jump into Nigeria is particularly serious since the infected individual carried the virus by plane to Lagos Nigeria, a city with a population of over 21 million. Doctors without borders has referred to the outbreak as “out of control”.
To make matters worse, there is something very, very important that the corporate media and public health officials are not telling you regarding this crisis.
You’ll notice if you read virtually any mainstream article on the topic that they make a point of insisting that Ebola is only transferred by physical contact with bodily fluids. This is not true, at all.
A study conducted in 2012 showed that Ebola was able to travel between pigs and monkeys that were in separate cages and were never placed in direct contact.
Though the method of transmission in the study was not officially determined, one of the scientists involved, Dr. Gary Kobinger, from the National Microbiology Laboratory at the Public Health Agency of Canada, told BBC News that he believed that the infection was spread through large droplets that were suspended in the air.
“What we suspect is happening is large droplets; they can stay in the air, but not long; they don’t go far,” he explained. “But they can be absorbed in the airway, and this is how the infection starts, and this is what we think, because we saw a lot of evidence in the lungs of the non-human primates that the virus got in that way.”

  4. Uncle, what you should do is to discourage unnecessary oversea travel here to your readers .
I am specially concern about that Matilah, farmer Patriot and that lone traveler Beritas.
Reading MSN is more interesting with you and them around.
Especially Matilah, your talent will go to waste if you any how hug this time.
Dun be naive and think only Africa is at risk.
They can go Bangkok and pass to the Siam Koay,if you hug a Siam Koay you oso get it.
But as a egoistic sifu, you will surely claim you are safe becos you only hug Pinay. But Pinay seamen oso return from there.
    Be alert,airborne virus or not.
Dun be another Esther Mok here.
But nothing to worry about your Patriot here .He is safe as he only eye for a piece of land in Bolehland to plant sugarcane.

Stay safe.I enjoy reading everyone's views.

  5. Hi agongkia, what you said is true. Very experienced sifu. The chicken fly everywhere and Matilah is a real risk.

But cannot talk too much about this or else the Raymond chap, he is trying to say he is secret police', would say we are scaremongering and is seditious. Got to warn those in TRE not to talk about this Ebola thing.

    OK, enough on this.

  7. @ RB posed a serious question:

    >> Ebola – Are we safe? <

Nothing is 100% safe. Risk is quantifiable, but it means fuck all to the average human. How we negotiate the world is by "sensing" the level of risk.

In this case: NO. No one is safe.

    >> The disease is posing a health epidemic across the whole world.

So far, only west Africa, Sierra Leone, in particular. When the 1st cases appear in Europe or Asia, then you can shit your pants. Until then, save your shit ;-)

All govts and individuals can do is take precautions, and the rest is just "random chance".

Certain micro organisms like specific viruses and bacteria exist to kill us -- to use live human tissue to perpetuate their genes. (I say again, this would be the time to read or re-read "The Selfish Gene" by Richard Dawkins.

    >> Our jam packed trains are not going to be very helpful if one joker is affected.

If the virus is already in Singapore, it is absolutely silly to blame SMRT for the transmission and make them look like "the bad guy" -- since it won't matter anyway.

    Cheap shot by redbean.

    >> Pray, pray hard.

That's not going to work either ;-) "Nothing Fails Like Prayer"

    @agongkia:

    >> Uncle, what you should do is to discourage unnecessary oversea travel here to your readers .

    Won't make a difference lah.

    >> They can go Bangkok and pass to the Siam Koay,if you hug a Siam Koay you oso get it.

If the virus is already in Thailand when you go there, you should hug and lick and suck and fuck as much as you can, because it won't make a difference. Everyone will die within a month. Have a grand old good time NOW! ;-)

    --------

    >> Translation: Ebola IS an airborne virus....'

NOT NECESSARILY, but most definitely possible. However, it would be prudent to treat the virus AS IF there was a real possibility of it being airborne.

If the virus is airborne, most of the world is fucked. So go and do as you please.

You have a few months at best :-)

  8. MOH is complacent and irresponsible to say we are safe from ebola. They just want to enjoy their bonuses and do less work.
A reported case in HK should have oened their eyes.
China have so many investments and construction projects in Africa and many mainland and HK chinese fly to and fro Africa regularly.

They may drop by this sin city called little red dot on the way to or back from africa.
Chinese is not known for their personal or food hygience and some of them may be ebola carrier and passed along the virus to some of their own kind while in this red dot.
Remember this virus has a long incubation period like 3 week and not detectable while in the dormant state.
This virus is dangerous and we are vulnerale with high concentration of foreigners living here and an open society with many visitors from many lands.
With dangr lurking around us, it is deplorable for MOH to adopt such bo chap attitude.

  9. Somehow this farmer has being troubled by intuitive sense that a man made disaster could happen here in my lifetime. Has been going through much pondering and has came to two likely possibilities.
One could be due to a freak election result causing nation wide chaos and Sg coming under marshall rule.

The more likely One will an outbreak of a deadly and highly contagious disease. Sg as an international travellers and goods hub, is one with the highest traffics of people and goods passing through us. The exposure to people and goods from all over the World is almost non-stop around the clock. This means Singapore has a higher risk of importing any infectious diseases happening around the World.
If a highly contagious disease with no cure takes place in this most compact tiny dot, it will be calamitous. There is absolutely no place for complacency and the slightest negligence could be very disastrous.
There could be other minor natural phenomenon happening as well, such heatwave and flood.

Anyway, the Chinese has a saying ' 是福或是祸, 是禍躲不过. Meaning to say it is hard to avoid being a victim when a disaster happens.

Do wish that natural disasters take their time to come. As for man-made blunders, may they be not too damaging and last too long.
