There is a need to protect some trades and professions for citizens

The need for FWs in the construction industry and some harsh vocations is recognized by the govt and the citizens. No one is complaining about hiring foreigners to take up jobs that citizens shunned. Hiring of foreign workers in these jobs has become a necessity and not a choice.

On the other hand there are many jobs that Singaporeans would want to do, not highly skilled but could provide them with decent incoming. These jobs do not need ‘foreign talents’ to compete with the citizens. The profession of taxi driving is an area of last resort, the fall back position of many PMEs to earn a decent living. This has been in a way protected for citizens. Is there a change that foreigners are now allowed to be taxi drivers? Foreigners turned citizens to become taxi drivers cannot be of any talent, and cannot be of better than Singaporeans to replace Singaporeans. It would be dreadful and shocking that one day foreigners are preferred to Singaporeans to be taxi drivers because they are more talented. Would that day come?

There are foreigners, citizens and PRs, engaging in many professions that Singaporeans are quite happy to be in without the need to be terribly talented and highly qualified. Entry barrier to these trades are fairly low, eg insurance agents, housing agents, recruitment agents and stock broking agents. Should the govt allow free access to these trades by foreigners? What kind of expertise and extra talents or contributions would foreigners bring in to add value to these professions? There is really no need to allow foreigners to be in these trades. What is the point of having PhDs and masters graduates to be in these trades to compete with the citizens?

When would the govt have a change of heart, a change of policies to protect some trades for the citizens? When would the prostitute mindset be changed? Opening these trades to foreigners, even new citizens, is a threat to the quality of life of Singaporeans and cannot be allowed if the interests of the citizens is to be protected. Opening our economy and country cannot be a blank cheque to open up everything, and stripping off our panties. Some vital parts must be protected from uninvited intrusion to retain some dignity and self respect.

No entry signs must be erected in some areas. There are things that are sensitive in nature, critical and important to the average citizens and cannot be given away freely without affecting their lives. The govt has no obligations to provide good jobs and vocations to foreigners, but owe a big responsibility to make life better for the citizens. Or am I wrong, that this govt owes the citizens of the world good jobs and a good life, not to its citizens?

When would the policy makers descend from the high clouds to understand what is going on at ground level?

  1. When I lived in Singapore 20 years ago, the majority of bus drivers, sales people were local singaporeans. When we came back to Singapore in 2010 we were shocked to see the change. Bus drivers are now mostly PRC, and sales people at M1, Starhub, etc are mostly Filipino.
Most probably the salaries for these jobs dropped dramatically and it hypocritical to say "Singaporeans shun those jobs" when you're taken those jobs away by paying FWs much lowr salaries

  4. In A meritocracy, those who dare win. There is no place for laggards and slackers who need "govt protection" because they cannot or will not compete for the dollar, and expect things to handed to them in an iron rice bowl.

As I've mentioned in several older posts, entrepreneurship is growing amongst the young -- people who enjoy freedom and autonomy, supported on personal enterprise and (eventual) success.

This Forbes article on Singapore entrepreneurship and the MASSIVE govt support thereof reflects what I've been saying all along.

Singapore is built on private enterprise -- right from the very beginning. And as I've said before: you can do almost any type of (legal) venture here -- it is, beyond doubt the easiest place in the world to start a business.

Of course starting a business doesn't mean you are going to hit gold the first time. Not everything you try is going to yield a profit.

I have just spent the last 2 weeks in Malaysia -- what a fucking mess of a cuntry that is. The govt is fucked. The work attitude of the people are fucked. The only thing holding up the whole cuntree is the spirit and activity in the private sector: those people GALVANISED BY THE PROFIT MOTIVE producing goods and services to make life worth living for the rest of us.

But even the private sector business owners have to struggle with butt-fuck lousy work ethic from the slack-arsed locals...particularly from a single ethnic group, which I won't mention by name. This specific culture in general, expects the world to provide them everything with zero effort or sacrifice. Many of them insist on stopping work altogether (whilst their boss continues to pay their wages) to pay homage to their invisible sky-fairy-ghost not one, not two, not three...but FIVE fucking times a day!! Contrast that ridiculous and POINTLESS cultural practice of the fact that most of us eat 3 meals and shit probably twice a day -- activities actually necessary for our health and survival.

So Singapore comes out tops as a place for entrepreneurship to flourish. The data prove the shift in culture: young Singaporeans are becoming more entrepreneurial in their outlook and expectations. They are not going to WASTE THEIR TIME on a bunch of SAD OLD FUCK LOSERS with lousy attitudes, who expect (still in these happening times of the 21st century) the govt to provide and protect them form all manner of competition.

    Got meritocracy and profit motive?

  5. Now this is true. After the taxi driving trade has been taken away, the only profession left for Singaporeans is political office. But this may not stay for long. It would be like the taxi drivers, issue them a pink IC, no need to do NS, and can become MPs, ministers and PM.

  6. Many MPs and Ministers are not true blue blue Singaporeans.

Many are from countries that ostracized them with no choice of political offices except to kow tow to their bumi Masters.

So, here they come, initially with much patience and humility with their masks on.

Sucked up to the daft arrogant Masters who put them there.

Now on top of you, show their true colors by by scorning you as daft and let them took over your rights and privileges.

No meed attend Parliament lah unless the Great Leader is there.

Now he also unable to attend so boh cheng ho liao, just take allowances and do your own things for extra monies.

    Singaporeans too daft,
    kind in their wrong ways.

Helping those who bite you rather than their own.

Deserved to be replaced and screwed by them.

  7. @RB: a few weeks ago, I had a rare bad experience with a Singaporean cabbie coming in from Changi Airport. He was one lazy motherfucker, scowling attitude, absolutely abominable customer service. Never even budged from his cab at the airport or when I arrived at my destination. Usually the cabbie gets out to help you load/unload your luggage. This fuckwit stayed put.

Some more want to argue with me on which route to take to Farrer/ Holland area, and then gets pissed because I reminded him who is the one paying. And then he drives like an idiot. I usually pay cash give $5-10 tip to airport cabbies. This guy, fuck him -- I use debit card and paid to the cent. To top it off this fucker had been smoking in his cab, so the trip became a test of endurance of being immersed in a smelly ashtray. I should have complained to COMFORT about this guy. No "comfort" for me in this experience.

Contrast to this loser, yesterday I came from KL and got an Indian cabbie -- obviously a new citizen. Wah, damn polite and helpful. Cab pristine like out of showroom. Smooth driver, yes he got a nice tip.

Meritocracy rewards the willing and able.

This is not to say that foreigners are better cabbies than locals -- after all these are only 2 data points, and experience is SUBJECTIVE. However it does suggest that those who take their work and attitude more seriously, and pay attention to the details, are likely to get better rewards.

In KL I used an app called My Taxi which is similar (same company) to our local Grab Taxi app. The difference is that the KL version has a TIP feature: you can state a tip amount in your taxi booking. After extensive use, I have found that adding a RM5 or RM10 tip to the booking makes cabs appear in 3-5 mins :-) (RM10 is only AUD3.30 -- you can't even buy a pie for that in Australia. Bus fare minimum is AUD4.20).

But even as a cabbie, regardless of nationality, there's competition from entrepreneurs like UBER.

Transport problem? What transport problem? With entrepreneurs and a good work ethic from sub contractors, plus govt oversight and protection...EVERYONE WINS -- investor, operator, suppliers, customers.

If you start protecting lazy fucks, you won't get innovation. Cuntrees like Australia have learnt this lesson painfully. Malaysia needs to learn this lesson and fuck off their "protected race".

    1. With due respect I don't think Comfort cabbies behave in that manner. Maybe it's from another operator. I say this cuz Comfort won't hesitate to sack errant cabbies. Those sacked cabbies then jump over to other operators. This is what I know.

      Delete
    2. To add further. If what you say is true then all the more you shld lodge an official Complt to weed out errant cabbies in order to safeguard the rest! What's the point of talking here?

  8. P.S. The best hope for any cuntree which is trying to foster an entrepreneurial spirit is to EMBRACE creative destruction even if it means your tired old job is soon going to be done by cheap electronica made by Chinese, programmed by Indians and marketed by some global multinational, probably American.

Here's another kicker: if lots of people can do your job, then the market price for the labour will fall. No govt intervention can overturn economic law lah. Get fucking real.

Free wheeling capitalism must be moderated by a bit of restraint. They don't create bikinis for nothing. It makes the gals look much better than without them.

While agreeing that capitalism and competition are good, it cannot be left so free like a loose nut in the head. Some things must be held back. Not that every citizen is lazy and fucktup just because you met with one.

The govt is crazy to let things go so free, but they will not be the govt anymore if they follow and do as what you said.

    ReplyDelete
  10. @ RB:

    >> The govt is crazy to let things go so free,

Let's just agree the govt, all govts are crazy because they are made up of crazy people who are given absolute power.

So the sg.gov shifts and changes occasionally. A few years ago: open borders. WOW business popping up everywhere. Now, curtail foreign labour. Many businesses -- especially in the hospitality industry have closed, because they cannot get the labour they want.

But all things considered, Singapore remains reasonably free. You can do anything, and pocket the profits. The downside is that rental is expensive. For foreign entrepreneurs, that is a multi-sided whammy: they have to live somewhere -- and no where is "cheap" anymore, then they have to aquire premises, also not cheap, and probably a fleet of vehicles (backside koyak). However, there's an alternative by relocating to Johor, but that also comes with added challenges.

Still, all things considered, Singapore -- at least to me, and I am not alone -- is the foremost, Numero Uno place to do business on the whole planet. So fucking easy lah.

      Really?
Why are SME claiming that it is hard to get workers, rentals are horrible, utilities and transports are big problems and the multitudes of regulation hamper their operations from time to time.

Read reports that many businesses resorted to many means to make money. Overchargings for goods and services, pirate imports and imports of fake goods. Under declared GST, phantom employees, under report revenue, income and exaggerated tax-deductible expenditure etc are said to be common practices.

Maybe there are professionals working as experts and consultants to businesses on how to make their money the easy way in Sin.

Please lah RB, they understand very well what is going on at ground level, much better than what u bloggers think or understand.

If not, how could they have won at least 60% votes every election and become govt and not a blogger, u tell me lah?

    >> Fucking easy. <<

    >>>> Really?

I think, in this context we have differing meanings of "easy". I meant "easy" in the sense that mandatory admin and organisational work to comply with govt. requirements and laws are so much more "easier to deal with" than if you do business in other cuntrees (although many are changing). In Thailand, they make foreigners jump through hoops like performing monkeys -- although if you are "well connected" things are alot easier.

    >> Read reports that many businesses resorted to many means to make money.

Yes, that happens almost everywhere. I don't think it is worth spending the resources to even police this. Just let it go. Businesses (run by bosses) which consistently do unethical and illegal shit are usually poorly run anyway, and will eventually fail catastrophically, or the fuckers will get caught up in legal entanglements with stakeholders as well as the authorities.

Being an SME, you are always going to get buffeted by markets, labour supplies, competition, financing, partner woes, expensive litigation, ...and all sorts of shit that can mess up your day, suck out your equity, and leave you occasionally living off your credit cards just to stay alive. It's hard lah. But in Singapore, less so.

  15. No job is safe these days. Even in EU, professors worried all the time they will be let go.

THis ruling party has long given up on locals. It is the locals (60%) who continues to cling on to them and unable to let go. There is bound to be conflict in a situation like this.

Jobs in the job bank are for singaporean only ie citizen and PRs.
I thought these jobs are strictly for citizen only. PRs are not citizen. Why are they allowed to compete freely with citizen for coveted jobs?

Citizens of Singapore not encouraged to do ... correct?

  20. The Criterias and Conditions to stand for election are exclusively for certain candidates only.

Shall it be said that anyone should be eligible to be candidate so long he/she is of sound mind and has never being convicted for crime. It is the popularity of a candidate and not educational and station in life that matter. So long voters like the candidate, he/she shall be their representative .

  22. Singapore is using the meritocracy system. Why can't you accept that there are those who are better than you Singaporeans. If they are, then why can't they get the job. Why should there be a ring fence around certain profession. It should be, the better people get the job. Singaporeans are so spoilt. You want to be nannied all your life. Why should you be given a golden rice bowls when other are better than you? If you are good enough then by all means get the job. Don't cry and bitch for the government to change policies just to suit you. Lets be fair, you cannot have the win-win situation all the time. Being pampered and spoilt does not entitle you to get preference when the competition get fierce. If you cannot compete with the new FTs, then no one is stopping you to go to another country where you will be the FTs.

RB, stop your dribble and be more constructive in your postings.

If You are better, You would have and should have remain in your motherland to make your country as good as Singapore, BUT YOU DO NOT HAVE THE ABILITY TO DO SO. SO YOU COME HERE AND TAKE A RIDE ON SINGAPOREANS.
AND NOW YOU TALK BIG HERE WHEN YOU CANNOT EVEN CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR OWN COUNTRY.

Time will come when Native Singaporeans will bear You no more and You shall learn to keep your big mouth shut for good. The Day will come and You shall your worth only lies in YOU BEING CHEAP AND YOU WILL ALSO SHOW YOURSELF TO BE A COWARD WHEN YOU ARE TESTED.

The FTs are cheaper than the Singaporeans because they are more hard working and hence more productive. If you own a company, and the bottom line is important, who would you employ to work for you? Would you honestly say you would still employ lazy and pampered Singaporeans or would you opt for cheaper and more productive FTs. Be honest OK?

  27. To Anon 8:15 pm.

The problem does not lie with foreign workers. It is the Rulers that pawned and sold us out. They do not protect our rice bowls, quite the Contrary, they broke it. Our costs of kivings in everything went up simply because the rise in population inflate everything in this tiny rock. Even our space, quality of living are badly affected. And why are our Rulers selling us? So that they can have their sinful greeds for wealth and power. Of course they will deny, but there is no running away. The Way they remunerate themselves is beyond comparison anywhere in the World. And Sin is less than 800 square kilometres, much smaller than many cities in other countries.
If the foreigners are detestable, they are chicken compare to the Monsters that rule us.
Foreigners can never bully us if our Rulers do not sanctioned them to settle and work here. The Ones that deserve the antagony of the People has to be our very own Rulers. So, fuck them.
