‘(6 Nov) – Malaysia has the highest English language proficiency level
in the entire Asian region, according to a latest research by
Swiss-based international education company EF Education First (EF).’
The above is quoted from an article in TRE. OK, you can start laughing.
We all know that it is a joke right? Now who are we laughing at, Sin
City or Malaysia or the Swiss based international company EF Education
First. Whoever you are laughing at, it is good to see such highly
claimed agency making such a farcical report.
With no disrespect, we know that the education system in Malaysia is
Bahasa based and Sinkie education is English based. And Malaysia is more
proficient in the English Language than Sin? Hehehehheh. OK OK, give
them the benefit of the doubt that they are far away. It is OK, we
understand. Angmoh tua kee, must be right. We may invite this
organization and all its foreign talents here to set up office for such a
brilliant find. Issue them with EP immediately, no need to question
their talents that are so remarkable.
Or we won’t as they have disputed our proficiency in the English Language. They are insulting us whoa!
PS. Maybe it is the way how some of us speak English that are found wanting.
I agree, the natural instinct is to burst out with raucous laughter at this claim.
ReplyDeleteHowever, for me, when someone makes a claim, I ask for evidence to support the claim, and the method used to verify then interpret the evidence to arrive at a conclusion, i.e. the claim itself.
heh ....heh
ReplyDelete... mi nok surprice
... giben de infuck of forlan tatent on de sampang thoo courtesy of papig, we had evolved from singlish to papig england
... nok plat plat okay
Ya hor, our Ingrish is getting betterer.
ReplyDeletesimply because ...
ReplyDeletethose countries except singapore has their own written and spoken language.
AND ARE PROUD OF THEIR HERITAGE!!!
and for matland up north, yes their national language is in english too ... english characters
"knnccb" .... hey this is england too
They are number one because they used simplify English.
DeleteShort form- block to book.
Short and sharp.
These people wants to establish some Unis there so have to say nampar one in Hong Kong English.
Should be block to blok.
DeleteI laughed until I fell off my $1500 ergo chair and rolled onto the floor still laughing until my wife nearly called the IMH ambulance.
ReplyDeleteThese alpine tua kee lan ang mohs must be living in the cold for too long.
When the mata mata stops me on their highways and demand a toll, my protestations are always met with a blank stare and then a torrent of gibberish worst than singlish laced with their bahasa.
Which starts me thinking. Are all these rankings by so called international bodies really that accurate?
WTF, now, I am beginning to think that we don't deserve the world's best airport title because I know for a fact that it isn't really that great.
Airport staff no longer speaking Singlish but Pinoyish. Washrooms dirty and not mopped with all those Ah Peks gossiping their latest tryst at Geylang after their day is done. Security staff recruited from that country up north who always greets the ah moh tua kee lan with servility while we the Sinkies are ignored and worst subjected to a stricter check. Talk about a chip on their shoulders and having an axe to grind.
We need to send out teachers to Malaysia to brush up their English. Our university students better go to Malaysia to perfect their English. Our angmoh expatriats should find Malaysia easier to communicate using English.
ReplyDeleteOur English education hub is not at stake. Foreign students would not prefer to go to Malaysia that now has a better English speaking environment.
Someone bride the agency lah! seriously I agree with RB that perhaps this is a classic example of how we should not think foreigners are better than locals and to give employment passes easilly without verification.
ReplyDeleteHope MoM learn something from this episode. Not all whites are better educated and more skillfull.
RB, you are so diplomatic. A rubbish report is a rubbish report. It is good that it is reported to show the silliness of the people behind it.
ReplyDeleteAre Sinkies not all along laughing at survey results concluded by international survey, research and marketing agencies that claimed Sin is the best and top in everything from happiness, cleanliness to saftest?
ReplyDeleteSin is Number One in everything.
Uncle Redbean happy or not?
You know what is a laughing stock?
ReplyDeleteEnglish is the official language here, taught at first level in schools from pre school to university.
ReplyDeleteIn Malaysia, official language and working language is Bahasa. Bahasa is barely taught as a second language.
And Malaysians are more proficient in the English Language? I know the reason. The Swiss don't speak English and cannot tell the difference between English and Bahasa.
Why get so worked up?
ReplyDeleteUK, the home of English, did not even make it to the list.
just to show how silly these surveys are lah.
ReplyDeletehow do we explain that lots of Malaysian hua ren can also speak better Mandarin than Sporeans
ReplyDeletewhy channel 8,u need to take in foreign news readers despite the bilingual policy!
Chinese education in Spore cannot even produce enough talents to read news on local TV??
Malaysia Chinese news station has no such problem !!
CNA also hires so many foreigners given jobs to read English news and host current affairs program
why ?
We need more foreign talents mah.
ReplyDeleteSinkies all so daft how to use? Only good to drive taxis lah.
Today I buy kopi for RB. Like dat proper English or not?
ReplyDeleteI tend to agree. Now, Bahasa Melayu is so much like English in the sense that so many of their malay words are derived from English eg technologi, universiti, ekonomi, prospek etc etc. Don't they have words to describe such things instead of wholesale borrowing?
ReplyDeleteMalaysia is murdering the English language would be a more apt finding.
Walau..People say Malaysia got highest English proficiency you all oso jealous.
ReplyDeleteWhy everything Sinkie want to be number one huh?
Eberytine want to be the highest but pay COE and bill want the lowest.
S'pore should have been first. I think what might have happened is this: That Swiss company EF Education First when they did the survey, their survey pool must have been those newly landed Ah Tiongs and Apunenehs who had been given S'pore citizenships. Ah Tiongs can't speak English to save themselves and the newly landed Apunenehs's English must have been indecipherable to those who conducted the survey. That is why we lost to Malaysia.
ReplyDeleteMalaysia ranks 11 and Singapore 12. Another 10 countries were ranked better and mostly European countries but with English as a second language.
ReplyDeleteEnglish is the first language in Singapore and has become the mother of many Sinkies, the primary language. Many Sinkies spoke English, study English and nothing else.
I think the survey is correct. Singapore is ranked so low because our teaching of English is basically screw up and Sinkies thought they were taught English and spoke English but not at all.
They were taught Singrish and spoke Singrish. This must be the reason.
RB,
DeleteYou are correct. Maybe we don't speak English. We speak Singlish with those alien acronyms COE, ERP, COV, WSQ, AYE, CTE, KPE, HDB, NEA, SAF, URA, MOE, PSLE etc etc. No wonder those silly angmos don't understand at all. Langgar daa!
Maybe the survey ask basic question like 'How are you?' and the Sinkie answered 'Can lah'. So the assessor jotted down, "Person doesn't understand English". I've been to my grandchildren's schools. The teachers nowadays speak a different kind of English, very very different from the English spoken by my teachers in the 50s and 60s.
ReplyDeleteWas taught in the 60s by English Language teacher to pronounce Corps as Core.
DeleteNow news readers pronounced Media Corps as Media Crops instead if Media Core.
Which is correct??
What kind of kindergarten did you send your grandchildren to? My grandchildren twanged like American kids and I almost fell out of my chair.
ReplyDeleteThey went to the best kindergarten in Singapore, PAP type. Still scratching my head where they learnt to speak like angmoh.
I also pronounce as core for corp which is a military unit. In the case of Media Corp, I think the corp is short for corporation, so they read it as corb. Just my guess.
ReplyDeleteHoly smoke, I did not know that nowadays even teachers here speak a different kind of English. Please do not blame me because I am a long time retiree, who was schooled under the old system of speaking outdated English.
ReplyDeleteThat our English is different from International Standard English must be the reason people, like those Swiss researchers, do no understand us and so think that we are speaking a Martian language that only those educated under the Singapore education system can understand.
Gosh, losing like this to Malaysia in this region must be like being hit below the belt. 'Malu' betul! How did the University rankings ever put us in such high position I cannot understand.

Halo Mr Red Bean or Ang Tau,
Why don't you email OSC chairman on this matter since they are very keen to engage Singaporean nowadays.
Incidentally, you may be speaking with the right person since he is the highly esteemed minister in charge of education in SinkieLand.
Otherwise, you should feedback to your part-time $16k a month co-drivers in name only to upkeep his election promises of keeping the drivers awake by giving HSK two tight "SLAPS" in parliament in the next sitting by asking him why so malu ranking under his watch? Laggi somemore MOE arguably on par with MINDEF in getting the humongous slice of annual budget. What happen? Over sight and honest mistake again? Must buck up if slated to be potential "crown prince in line to succeed the throne" right?
My grandchildren go to neighbourhood schools, RB. My children don't have that much money to send them to schools with angmoh teachers. I've talked to my grandchildren's teachers and attended school concerts. The teachers' pronunciation of words is really bad and almost every sentence spoken is grammatically wrong. Their written English is good but spoken English is really terrible. When they open their mouths to speak, it seems all grammatical and sentence structure rules are forgotten.
ReplyDeleteThe oldies who had their education seemed to speak and write better English than the current crop of educators.
DeleteEven our counterpart fellow Malaysian oldies under the British system of post war educational system.
After that become rojak, switching to so many changes in the teaching of the English language.
Speak bahasa Malaysia then mandarin.
One fine example is our mr redbean roadside storey teller churning out interesting articles daily with his Queen's English.
Just compare to mati-lah with his flowery English of fuxx fuxx fuxx
Tell you a secret. My Ingrish is 'goh kar kee' type.
