The silly myth of bringing in better talents

The craps of not wanting to lose out on a better foreign talent is being waved by everyone especially the foreigners and foreign recruiting agencies as the excuse to bring in foreign talents. This silly reasoning must be put to a stop. I can replace every Sinkie in every profession, including ministers as there will be one better foreigner to replace him.

We must be very clear why we allowed foreigners to work here. We need better foreign talents, we are short of talents/professionals in some fields, but no, we don’t need to bring in another foreigner because he happens to be a little better than another Sinkie so we can replace the Sinkie.

Take the foreign footballers as an example. What good is there to bring in the foreign footballers? Do they make our national team better? Or should we replace everyone in our national team with these foreign footballers? In this particular case, the only reason for them to be here is to fill up the numbers in the few clubs that we have. Even this is really not necessary, unnecessary. We can still have our football league with our local boys kicking the balls around and the bets going on as usual. There is no real value add with all the foreign footballers here.

What is so great about having a few better accountants, managers, engineers, bankers just because they are claimed to be better? Did they change anything in the game? If they are game changers, that makes a big difference. Those are the type of talents that we need. Do we need more talented mee siam sellers to replace our mee siam sellers?

For practical reasons, we only need professionals to fill jobs where there is a real shortage in a particular field. Many of the professional jobs can be filled by Sinkies or by so called foreigners and nothing really changes. A good example is the way the Australians handle such economic migrants. There is a list of jobs like plumbers, sewerage engineers, carpenters, cooks, nurses etc that they need as they did not have enough Australians working in these jobs. The migrants are allowed in not because they were better plumbers, better cooks or better nurses, but because there is a shortfall.

If the logic is to bring in better talents in mundane routine jobs, we don’t need Sinkies anymore. And mundane routine jobs can be PME jobs. We have enough trained and qualified Sinkies for these jobs. And only stupid and irresponsible people will accept the stupid reasoning that we should replace Sinkies with foreigners because the foreigner is a better talent than the Sinkie. What difference does it make if a better foreign civil engineer or IT professional is recruited to replace a Sinkie? Nothing. They are all doing the same job, nothing more nothing less, unless the Sinkie is not qualified and cannot do the job.

Shouldn’t a graduate be employed to be a petrol pump attendant as he is better talented? Is he going to be more productive than a ‘boh tak cheh’ ah pek? The graduate is a talent of course, a better talent than the ah pek. So? What is the competition, competing against who and making money from where and who?
The only good reason is that we don’t have enough in the profession that we need foreigners. We don’t need foreigners so that our Sinkies can be replaced and made jobless, no matter how talented the foreigners are.

Stop spewing rubbish and myths to con the daft Sinkies.

Look at issues regarding population, housing, transportation, healthcare, education, flooding, etc......

I think our PM must establish a STRATEGIC division under one of the minister-without-portfolio within the PM office to look far into the future and be proactive regarding these issues........

What is more strategic than strongest opposition not being ready to be govt? And smart Sinkies can make lots of money?

  5. Recent surveys on % of locals in MNCs are poorly done and purposely include PRs as locals. Here we are shouting on top of our voice telling government that our jobs are being robbed by foreigners and these include PRs who gain easy access due to generous intake policy by giovernment. Yet, the government only do lip service of conducting a half baked survey to proof nothing is out of order. What are they trying to con? Con You?

  6. With more foreigners, it is true local PMEs can lose their jobs to them.

But as long as these "made jobless" local PMEs are a minority, say 40% or less, it should be OK. Companies will gain from cheaper foreign talents and GDP will also grow with more foreigners in the workforce.

If I were govt, I will look at this big picture and also whether the strongest opposition is the WP.

  8. It is a gross fallacy to say foreigners are better than Sinkies though it is also true that for every talented Sinkies, there are hundreds of thousands better elsewhere. BUT, THEY DO NOT BELONG HERE.
IT IS BECAUSE THE FOREIGNERS ARE CHEAPER AND EASIER TO MANIPULATE AND EXPLOIT THAT THEY ARE PREFFERED AND DESIRED.

The foreigners are brought in and turn into locals and soon they will turn themselves into the Local's Masters. Beware of the Consequence.

Smart Sinkies also very strategic one. If not ah, why they so happy and satisfied when cost of living is so high, HDB pigeon holes so expensive etc etc?

Even WP also very strategic one. If not ah, how can they become the strongest opposition with 7 elected MPs?

He looks at his sister in poor health and replaces her with a strong Chinese woman. He looks at his daughter with lousy PSLE results and replaces her with a brilliant Indian teenager. He looks at his wife of average beauty and replaces her with a Miss American. That man may be enjoying better performance, but where is the original family.

It is the same with a nation. Singapore has higher GDP but where are the original Singaporeans?

  21. It's all about money . Big money to be made by recruiting agencies and the foreign HRs employment agencies from these companies . Foreign professionals coming here to Singapore are willing to pay recruiting agencies commissions to be able to work in (PME) positions in Singapore on a E-Pass which they eventually could get PRs. Work some years in Singapore, and then off they go to a better place USA or Australia . Moreover, getting a good paying jobs back home in their countries in India , China or Philippines are so competitive and difficult . Also considering Singapore's better infrastructures, medical facilities, environmental and better security than their country back home . It attract them to Singapore like a magnets .

Just look up some newspaper reports some times back, the S-Pass work permit foreigners working in the building industries -- how many have admitted that they paid their recruiting agencies back in India thousands of dollars to be able to work in Singapore . And they are so afraid to loose their jobs and be send home .
Same goes to the E-Pass holders ... not so much as they are more talented than Singaporeans ( PME ) or our local fresh graduates. They are here to replace our (PME) citizens --- see Patriot post below .

    >> 11:51 Patriot <<
They are recruited to work in Singapore because they are cheaper and easier to manipulate and exploit , that they are preferred and desired .

It is a number games in millions of dollars . How much do you think our local experience professionals or fresh graduates ; when applying for a PME jobs are willing to pay these recruiting/ employment agencies and HRs . I may assume, almost close to nothing - $0 dollars right . So , is there any incentive for these agencies to hire Singaporean PMEs . I doubt so . But I have to stress that I do not mean to say all recruiting or employment agencies or HRs ; maybe some unscrupulous few are doing it . Cannot imagine if all are doing it today ..they will cause a total uproar and unimaginable multitude
    of turmoil in Singapore .
I cannot believe that our NUS , NTU and SMU graduates are not better than some of these "DO-NOT-KNOW-WHAT" university graduates from India, China or Philippines . What more , some come with a " forge " degree ... was discovered only after several years later. What happen to those not discover yet?
So , who's duty or who's fault in the first place ... is it the work of a " failed " policies or some authority .
I read with interest that MOM finally is coming out with some sort of control to the industries ... firms must show they tried to recruit Singaporeans first ( ST- 24/09/2013 ) and jobs bank established and run by Singapore Workforce Development Agency . 10 firms slammed for biased job ads and banned from hiring new foreign workers for six months (ST -26/09/2013) This is good news to our local PMEs , I hope this very welcome change in direction from MOM is able to improve their chance . But , but , let me remind the authority that still the recruiting companies and the employment agencies can still "wayang wayang" get some local PMEs for interview and fail them ... proofs that they can show MOM . Like I use to said , they are the " pro " in this money game. And in my this presupposition , I hope ; I "really hope " I am wrong to blame these recruiting/ employment agencies .

  30. redbean,

Actually the new "business-friendly" Abbot government is going to be adopting Singapore-style open borders for massive influx of foreign labour. This is from increasing pressure from business lobbies, as the private sector paying very high wages.

Here in WA, average monthly earnings for full time adult worker is approx AUD6500+. Try being a boss and meeting your payroll with those kinds of numbers. Fucking good luck to you!

Boom times, ok. However now not-so-boom-times, but wages still astronomically high.

So there will be lots of wayang, maybe even a few protests where police personnel kena hantam...Aussie workers will hate it...but eventually the PRIVATE SECTOR will get its way and have access to more "choice" in the labour market.

Different cuntree, same govt policy lah -- as dictated by the private sector -- the only sector which produces anything of value, and creates those high paying jobs.

No way . Even if the Australian government wants to , the unions and the citizens will give them hell . Australia is rich in resources and their government ministers are more concern not to be voted out in the next election .
Like redbean said, they have a good system to handle such economic migrants or the so called foreign talents
    umpteen years ago .

Singapore election .... not to worry . The Sinkies are much easier to satisfy . Just give them some sweeteners and they will be very happy to forget about all other issues . PAP will still win the election with the 60% support now . Some more sweeteners , maybe 70% . Correct some wrong or unpopular policies , chances to increase the winning to 75%.

The situation is many million-dollars-salaries+bonuses+what-have-you ministars also have been talking & talking & talking all these donkey years but the poor and the old also are still not doing any better? So what have they contributed to our society? Now middle class also kanna squeezed jialat jialat liao! So again ministars talk & talk all these years who benefit in the end? The filthy rich 1%, yaya papaya elites and the many endless foreigners imported to "bring down costs"? "To bring down costs", there can be many different options. Why must the poor and middle class bear the bulk of the brunt, if not all? Frankly, for those who have ever taken economics, when SinCity elites adopt a stance of a perfectly elastic practically unlimited supply of labour ( approxly 3.5 billion NE, SE & Sth Asians ), it simply means wages for the poor, the old and many PMEs would perpetually stay depressed as long as this policy stance is in place. If ever our elites are as talented as they are touted to be, surely they can have other options than just purely and almost fully passed on the full burden of low costs to the poor, the old and the middle class PMEs.

Btw, anon 11.10 am, all these talk & talk all these years regardless any effectiveness still bring the current and retired ministars and numerous elites millions and millions of remunerations.
