A monumental change in the making in the Singapore polity
I thought I sense something big is happening in the politics of this island. But I rule them out as voices from the lunatic fringe, congregating mostly in blogosphere. The anger and spitefulness cannot be missed and growing daily. Then, blogosphere is the equivalent of Liang Shan or Mt Liang in the classic Water Margin, where the heroes or victims of the establishment called home. So, I can only take the grumbling as a little disturbance and would come to nothing eventually. It is too small a group of people kpkb daily and awaiting for doomsday or a political judgement day.
Other than netizens in cyberspace, uneasiness and a sense of despair and helpless also pervade in casual discussions. The mood is that the ruling party has lost is support and trust from the people. The Presidential Election and the two by elections were seen as the harbingers of more of the same to come. The little crowd in Hong Lim too was read by many that it is not as small as it looked and the unhappiness is more widespread than thought.
Seah Chiang Nee, the ex ST editor, also wrote about the increasing vocal elite that were once part of the establishment and expressing their misgivings and disagreement quite openly. Then yesterday I read Catherine Lim, a doyen of govt critics, in an article about the PAP losing it. The party has lost its long taken for granted trust and support of the people. The people are cynical, and questioning, and doubtful of the direction going forward as plotted by the Govt.
In Catherine Lim’s view, all is not lost. The PAP only needs to cleanse its past by embracing the ex political dissidents that were forced out of the country, some released from political detention, and bows for forgiveness. That would show some sincerity and humility of the unpleasant past, and to emerge from the dark side in sparkling white once again.
I am less sanguine about this assessment and less optimistic that the problem is just about a dark chapter of our political history. I think the problems are more basic, bread and butter issues, jobs, cost of living and the increasing tension brought about by a misplaced foreign talent group that have proven to be more a pain in the arse than people deserving to be welcomed as new partners in our economic and social development. Many citizens are feeling cheated by Govt policies and a future of a highly intense society, of having to pay more for less, smaller homes, no cars, bank breaking hospital fees, and having to compete unfairly with foreign mobs that are haughty, cocky, unworthy and untrustworthy while feasting on our hospitality and taking away good jobs from the locals.
The PAP is losing its grip on the voters in more ways than could be envisaged. I don’t see any hope of them regaining the trust and support of the people like in the past. It is a slippery downward slide to oblivion. I qualify to say that my readings are one sided. Then again, the truth will surface very soon when grassroots leaders are also getting ambivalent about what is installed for them in the next GE.
Things are not looking pretty for the PAP. Feel free to disagree with my diagnosis. I am just a political watcher and commentator and I am looking at the scenario through tinted lens.
PAP is like a child losing his direction and trying everything to see if he can hit a target. Sad but what do you expect when PAP did not even bother to listen to its people all these while? You harvest what you sow.
ReplyDelete"Things are not looking pretty for the PAP. Feel free to disagree with my diagnosis"
ReplyDeletePartially correct. You should have just said "Things are not looking pretty for Singapore".
PAP is like the foster parent that had gone overboard to control the children. Always putting the children down when they do something wrong and squeezing every ounce of benefits that the children are forced to provide (Oliver Twist) but not praise or rewarding when they do anything right. While the children were growing up, they tolerated the nonsense and humiliation but each and every child when they become independent would never support the foster parent.
ReplyDeleteSingaporeans are searching for their birth parents who will truly protect and favor them. It took us 50 years to realize that PAP is just our foster parents.
The PAP will be in power for many years to come, because they're masters of the Machiavellian Arts of statecraft.
ReplyDeleteThey rule by fear and motivate by carrot and stick. The carrot and stick is inevitably the HDB-CPF mechanism -- leverage which they use to full political advantage. OK, so a couple of SMC's have managed to wrench free from this, but for the most part, the PAP holds and squeezes everybody's balls.
The noise on the net is just that: NOISE. Local Singaporeans are essentially a PASSIVE BUNCH. Very few will step up to the plate to bat...because they're SCARED or because they lack the skills. Sure they can write voluminous screeds on the net, maybe put up a few anti-govt youtube videos, perhaps even organise a rally...but they will NEVER take their CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE to the end game -- whatever that might be. Because they have NO BALLS.
They fear because they focus too much on what they think they could potentially "lose" instead of focusing on what they might potentially "gain".
If you understand the psychology of motivation, you will understand that protecting against loss is more "powerful" than embracing the potential for gain.
The PAP are masters of the game. The locals are just bloody slow learners.
And yes folks, it is a GAME. You have to be in the game -- an active participant -- to play, and hopefully play to WIN.
Got your game-face on?
Anon 9.31...PAP is not singapore.. Perhaps it's citizenry like you that brought us to this deplorable state..Singapore will prevail regardless of who is in power..we have always had a great divide..when the Brits were in control it was Brits /locals..after that..educated/illiterate now it's elites/Lower,middle class. PAP cannot be reformed..too many hanger ons to feed..only way ..like the pop singer od'ed on drugs..go to the ashram/temple and recant ..I'm thankful for the Internet...it is impossible to shut out the free flow of comments, ideas n ideals. Arguably, PAP's greatest abhorrence.
ReplyDeleteI think it is citizens like you who has got used to the good life who rode on PAP's good policies and failed to see the world is changing and we are connected to the world, failing to see the Hard truths that are causing this deplorable state.
ReplyDeletePAP masters of the game? Look at the two by elections and see who is the master and who is the loser.
ReplyDeleteThey cannot lie to the people all the time. It is game over.
@anon 1052
ReplyDelete>> It is game over.
Apart from your obviously negative sentiments, do you have any empirical proof to support your claim?
And BTW, it was only ONE by-election. One data point. You cannot factor in Hougang in your argument because they don't vote PAP. Period.
@jigg 1030:
ReplyDelete>> brought us to this deplorable state.
Deplorable for WHOM, exactly?
To me Singapore is an awesome rocking place -- so easy to do business and one of the EASIEST places on earth to live. But...that's me. But I'm not alone. I see multitudes of people having a good time. Sure the trains are crowded, and it's getting a tad expensive...so what? People still manage. The quiet ones don't complain, they just get on with it.
Why are there so many people relocating to Singapore, if it is in such a "deplorable state"?
Got "examine my presuppositions and assumptions before shooting my emotionally-driven mouth off"?
No? I didn't think so.
What a bunch of ingrates!
ReplyDeleteWithout the PAP, where do you think you'll be?
The PAP has created nice, beautiful HDB flats, created the interconnectivity essential for an internet environment, whatever for? The PAP should have just left you alone in your old kampong. What have you done for Singapore apart from throwing shits at the PAP?
When the pieces are broken who is going to fix it? The WP? SDP? Get real!
Just be careful what you wish for.
At this point you are entitled to your views and I my opinion. You right or I right no need to argue until face green green.
ReplyDeleteSee you in 2016.
@anon 1130
ReplyDeleteYou're pulling our legs, right?
Good one ;-)
11:30, how old are you? PAP is not indispensable and when it is not doing good for the people, it must be replaced. The PAP today is not the same PAP yesteday.
ReplyDeleteThey also said, if Sinkies no good, replace with foreign talents. They will replace you if you no good.
PAP is getting better each day. Bo more local working as maid in angmo home. No more ma chiah carrying buckets of cement up staircases. No more local girl working at gayland, kheng chio kah and keong saik rd. Matilar collects tens of thousands sin dollars from rents and contracts and parks himself at holland village just to drink and cum. Others do the same and live in ivory towers.
DeleteBritish time, sinkies lived at swamps and slums at chinatown, bukit ho swee. Where got 50 storey condos and parks below. Few could even afford bicycles, now the roads full of merces, bmws and ferraris.
Sinkies have come a long way, lucky fucks.
The PAP always evolve to meet whatever is needed to stay in power.
ReplyDeleteThey're courting the world's wealthy. Bingo. They've now got a new set of cashed-up patrons they can count on for "assistance".
Good luck to you. Wanna try going up against power AND wealth, and the shitload of "pooled resources".
What you got motherfucker? A wireless computer, one lousy vote, and a shitload of bills to pay every month.
Hope you can handle disappointment :-)
Got 3-wish genie?
/// What a bunch of ingrates!
ReplyDeleteWithout the PAP, where do you think you'll be? ///
Fully agree.
Sang Nila Utama Lee Kuan Yew discovered Singapore.
Sir Stamford Raffles Lee Kuan Yew made Singapore into the modern city that it is today.
Singapore would be even better if there were no Singaporeans in Singapore.
Just LKY working with PAP to build a better Singapore.
All Sinkies on your knees and bow for your good fortune to the God of Sin.
ReplyDeleteSinkies working class will be better off if sinkies still part of malaya. Can have big houses and nice cars not living in small flats and take public transport. Those with rental incomes also have to pay high coe unless they live somewhere like matilah. But matilah also have to pay a lot of travelling expenses. This ruling party is quite smart to make a lot of monies for themselves. Anything goes wrong, they will just blame the people, take their monies, go somewhere else to live and leaving all the mess for the next party to clean up. I will not be surprised that during GE2016, they will standby at airport to take flight if they lose. We have to see then but hope people no longer so daft.
ReplyDeleteWithout PAP, matilah would even be more successful. Matilah got talents but unfortunately under pap, he only gets this far.
ReplyDeleteSentosa already belongs to aliens, very soon mainland sing will also belong to aliens and we will have to pay to get in. Vote more parties in to replace this pro alien party.
ReplyDelete@anon 434
ReplyDeleteNo lah, please, I know my limits. Working 24/7/365 to build one's enterprise to be the biggest, the best, the richest...aiyah, too much work lah. I know some are driven that way, and also have good luck - power to them. They really deserve their billions.
The PAP never held me back. In fact, as a government -- like I've said before -- I prefer them (notice I never used the word "like") over any western democratic government I've had the experience of living and working under. The PAP are efficient, on the bola. I deal with the government of Singapore often -- by phone from Australia. Fantastic. Also by email -- immediate response, guranteed follow-up action.
Deal with the government here, or the USA...na bay chow ji bai lah. Waste your time. Make you run around from one department to another. Fill in this form, that form. "We'll get back to you in 2 or 3 weeks". "The fee is $300" Fuck spider lah.
No wonder people flock to Singapore to set up businesses, even if they don't necessarily "like" the government.
What you talking? You stand on top of Bt Timah you can see the whole island. You throw a stone it will hit everyone on the head. Why you need 2 or 3 weeks? No need cars also can. Can walk from one end of the island to the other in one day.
ReplyDeleteHuh? What are you talking about lah, uncle?
ReplyDeleteOne day, they will build ERP not for cars but for humans. Vote opposition cos this ruling party is inhuman.
ReplyDelete'No wonder people flock to Singapore to set up businesses' - why should people vote for a party that prioritize immigrants or business over people? immigrants have fast response and people have to wait 3-5years to get a flat? this ruling party deserves to be thrown away like trash. they cannot even proritize properly.
ReplyDeleteWith pro immigrant policies, sure immigrants will flock here. With anti citizen policies, citizen will be angry. Depends on who you are. Hotel guests very happy.
ReplyDeleteYes, come 2030, with 6.9m pop, everywhere may have ERP for people.
