Michael J

I have copied the UOB painting of the year 2012 by Esmond Loh. I think Esmond done a great job.

A portrait of Michael Jackson painted by Koi fish. This is a piece of rar art done with Koi fish forming every stroke of colours in the painting.

When I have done my finishing touch to this photo I was in a state of confusion. It did look like the King of Pop and also the King of Rock. The costume could fit any one of them. My mind kept swinging from KOP to KOR. One moment it looked more like one and the next moment it looked like the other. Quite exasperating.

I sat back to take a long stare at the photo. Then a voice screamed out. 'Look, it's Michael! I am Michael! Look carefully at my nose and my complexion. It is all written on my face.'

I stood up and took a second look. Oh God, it was Michael alright. And Michael it is and Michael it shall be. It reminded me of Thriller.

Remove the plastic and cosmetics, I am still who I am.

  5. Its really beautiful. You know I don't want to come across as rude. This probably has something to do with me and getting dropped as a baby. But I have been looking at this for like a very long time. Do you mind helping is out here. If you could just point me to the nose or any other body part, then I think, I will have no trouble making up the rest.

    What do you say?

I am sorry, but I just don't see it.

  8. I see the Monkey God gazing far ahead with his hand above the brows to block away the sunlight.
Maybe the Journey to the West is still far away.
There must be many more demons to contend with.

  9. Ok let me try to describe the pic. Michael was an Afro American. His original nose was flat before the surgery. See the black patch in the centre of his face? It was like the white little sharp nose had fallen off. The other black patches are his original skin once the cosmetics have been removed.

The pic is a head and shoulder shot with him wearing his military band uniform in one of his performance. His facial expression was more like in his Thriller video clip.

    Got it?

  11. Above was quoted from yesterday ST.

This work probably your most interesting and vibrant piece.

As with the 17 year old's painting, opinions are divided.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Ya, read that comment in the ST on the UOB Painting of the Year. The winning entry of the 17 year old boy is quite similar to this in a way. That was his self portrait and some oldies are trying to intimidate him with techniques.

The quality of a painting is not just about technique but also the concept and the emotions and vibrations that it can caused. Sometimes technique is important, sometimes concept and the essence the painting is conveying are more important.

As far as technique is concerned, my 30 plus years of photographic technique is quite reasonable. But in terms of concept and essence, who would dare to claim to be superior to Mother Nature?

My photopaintings are conceptualised and painted by Mother Nature. I don't think Picasso or Vincent would have the audacity to claim that they are better than Mother Nature. My contribution to all my photopaintings is at most 20%.

  13. Take Munsk's Scream. That painting is all about the feelings and emotions it created and technique is near zero.

  15. Should you remain a purist in your art form or do you want to mutate and explore alternative passion?

  16. Michael Jackson was a paedophile and a drug addict. He also voluntarily disfigured himself through plastic surgery.

Despite being an ugly freak, a junkie and a sex offender, and a total nut-case, Michael Jackson was a superb entertainer. Being a very mediocre singer (he sounds like Smurf trying to sound "black") Michaels hallmark was his dancing. He is, without doubt, one of the icons of contemporary dance.

    ReplyDelete
  17. By your reasoning, I can shit a nice watery diarrhoea on canvas, and call it "art". I guarantee you my "creation" will STIMULATE the emotions and "vibrations". ;-)

  21. RB is a skilled photographer. Wonder why he doesn't exploit that medium or show off that art form anymore? Perhaps merging political journalism with pictures?

Sometimes, pictures say it much better than pages of convoluted words.

Furthermore, nothing like the real thing.

  22. Photography and paintings are art forms. I am tryin to breach the two in photopainting, a new art form using camera to paint.

A photograph, no matter how well taken, often loses its appeal after a while. A painting can hold its appeal for a long time.

  23. "A photograph, no matter how well taken, often loses its appeal after a while. A painting can hold its appeal for a long time."

Not all will agree with you on this. But it is your call.

A good pic needs a lot of luck and often, effort and spent resources to capture it.

Camera to paint sounds like getting a cans of paint and splashing it on a wall.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Many photographs are captured in very difficult positions and needed great effort and even risk. A photographer's work and skill are no less than an artist. The thing is that not many photographs could hold the attention of the viewers for too long. They get jaded very fast. A Mona Lisa could do that for centuries.

Photopainting comes in many forms. Still yet to see one like splashing paints on the wall.

My metholodogy is like capturing the thoughts of an artist in his mind, not seen visually, not on a canvas. I am trying to capture the thoughts of Mother Nature.

The tricky part is to find where is Mother Nature's canvas, where does Mother Nature paint. Like the though of an artist, it is there but not there, and gone forever if not capture instantly.

This is a new concept. Photographing thoughts rather than an object.

    Redbean.
PS. I am having a bit of problem logging in at the moment.

  25. Hi Gaylord, welcome to the blog.

Arts today is entering a very creative and liberal phase. Many artists are exploring and creating new art forms everyday. And the public is more ready to welcome them.

Some may choose to be purist and some many choose the avantgarde road. The strength of art is in being creative and innovative. Restricting and restraining art is to kill art.

The freedom to express, to explore, to be different, to creat new forms, are the fundamental building blocks of art. Arts must not be limited or confined or restrained by anything or anyone.

  26. My response to Dr Colin Lim. Like in martial arts, there are many schools, many forms, many principles and rules. The ultimate form of martial art is formless, like Taichi.

Bruce Lee personified this with his Jeet Koon Do, ie, not limited by any forms or schools. He was from Wing Chun. But his execution is simple, direct and effective.

The result, the perfection of his execution, is the fruit of his art, not the form.

  27. Can I then say your pieces are technologically painted or created? Subjected to randomness?

Not mend to douse your new enthusiasm or passion, a still picture can capture the moment and evoke emotions and memories years later. Isn't that the reason why we take family photos and of important events in our lives?

Test it out. Put up several beautiful scenic pictures of mother nature against your abstract pieces and ask them which endears them more.

You will have your fans and supporters I am sure but don't write off still pics as "jaded"

    ReplyDelete
  28. My methodology requires a new mindset and skill set. You must know where and under what conditions would Mother Nature's painting be created. Random shooting will get you something but not the form and style that you are trying to achieve. There is randomness like those artists splashing paints, but there are conditions and norms, discipline without which there is no consistency and quality.

Apparently random, like some artists dripping paints from their fingers, but there is control and purpose and direction.

Photographs have different meanings, like you said, memories of old photographs to those attached to them. Photographs also have their followers.

As an art form, there will be those who like them and those who hate them, Damien Hirst, Munch, Picasso or Gogh, Botero. The latest UOB Painting of the Year also have its critiques.

    That is art.

  29. Basically, I can take the photo of the late Michael and put him through "my filter", scramble the image beyond recognition or barely recognizableand and call it art. No?

  33. Maybe I shall enlighten you people on how I get the kois to pose for my shots. I spent many hours talking to the kois to befriend them. When we got to know each other better, the kois are very intelligent fish, the kois became very cooperative.

So before I shoot, I told them to get ready for me, form some beautiful images that I can shoot. Otherwise the free swimming kois will be everywhere and all at the wrong places. To get them together and create beautiful paintings is not easy.

What I did was to tell them to do it on the count of 3. 1,2,3 and action, and I fired away. There were quite a number of beautiful paintings that I got from this relationship.

    I am now a Koi Whisperer: )
