I am not PRC
I read this article about a Sinkie complaining that a PRC waitress would speak to him in Mandarin for his orders. This is not the first time Sinkies felt offended when spoken to in Mandarin. Am I surprised? Is speaking to another Chinky, oops, I mean Sinkie Chink, in Mandarin an offensive thing? Isn’t Mandarin one of the four official languages of this country?
But I can understand why Sinkie Chink did not like PRC Chink to think that he is also a Chink. There is a difference of course. Sinkie Chinks are westernized, modern, sophisticated, with good manners, unlike PRC Chinks.
I think I have a solution for this agonizing dilemma faced by some Sinkie Chinks. And since it is not possible to ask the Sinkie Chinks to dye his skin white, have his slit eyes rounded, or his flat Chinkie nose sharpened, the next easiest thing to do is to wear a head band to say, ‘I am a Sinkie Chink.’ Then all the PRC Chinks would have no problems telling them apart and may take the hint to speak to them in English, the mother tongue of Sinkie Chinks.
And they should wear the head band overseas too as the PRC Chinks are everywhere, and richer too, driving Ferraris and Lamboghinis in New York and London. The Europeans are finding them so common and so numerous that any Sinkie Chink could be mistaken to be a poorer version of the PRC Chinks. So bring the head bands and wear it everywhere to be noticed and to be known.
How could the angmo who told Abraham Lincoln to go back to China know that Abraham Lincoln was a sinkie and not a PRC?
ReplyDeletethe angmo would know if abraham lincoln wears the headband. but he will still tell him to go back to china. but abraham lincoln should say 'singapore is in china'. this would confuse him and defuse the situation. so no more punch ups in the jamban.
ReplyDeleteexcuse me, not all chinese sporeans speak mandarin fluently. We prefer to speak in english and are very comfortable with our chinese identity. We dont need mandarin to make us more chinese.

Although I understand mandarin, I refuse to answer them when they speak to me. In fact on my last visit to the Polyclinic, this chinese aunty spoke to me in mandarin telling me to get the Q ticket etc. I stared and her and told her loudly, oblivious to the crowd, that this is Singapore not China, why are you speaking to me in Mandarin. She had the audacity to say “you never tell me you don’t understand.” So now are we supposed to inform them that we don’t speak mandarin before they speak to us. What in the world is Singapore coming to.
The above is a comment in TRE. Yes, I am wondering whatt the world is Singapore coming to when speaking an official language is taken as an insult or an offensive thing?
What are the four official languages of Singapore? I know, English, Malay, Tamil and Singlish.
Didn't they say Sinkies are daft? Need any proof?
ReplyDeleteSingapore is a bilingual country and its citizens are supposed to know two languages, English and mother tongue. For the Malays it will be English and Malay, Indians, English and Tamil, for Eurasians, English and English or any other language of choice, and for the Chinese, yes English and Singlish.
ReplyDeleteYou should be ashamed out yourself if you cannot speak Mandarin in Singapore. you should either wear a Sinkie Chinks head band or covert your race to Sinkie Chink from Chinese.
ReplyDeleteHaha, nice one Afganistan. And welcome to the blog.
ReplyDeleteRB, a language is a tool to facilitate communication between two parties. A chicken and a duck would not be able to communicate if both speak its own lingo.
ReplyDeleteA sensible person will find a common language so that two persons can talk and understand each other. It is extremely rude, nasty and arrogant not to speak to another person when you can but insist on the other person to speak to you in a language that he can't.
Hooligans. All the education has been wasted on such conceited fools.
Me am actually making life difficult for some in Sin too.
ReplyDeleteI used to and will be doing it for a long time to come.
Whenever and wherever I have to communicate, I will always request another Chinese anywhere to communicate with me in Chinese(Mandarin/Dialects). And if they cant, I will try my best to communicate with them to their comfort. And if still cannot get the message across, use sign language or give up.
Anyway, I was intrigued very much when Michael Jackson bleached himself. Dont know why just like why Asians change the colours of their hairs and eyes.
Or
speak with Western Accents.

Really RB?...
ReplyDeletewhat if...
Mandarin is used by service staff at Ritz Carlton/4 seasons/St Regis
what if.....
school teachers teach maths in mandarin?
would u trash emails written in mandarin/Tamil/Malay or try to get it translated..
Easier to say...fuck it...I'm going somewhere else to eat....hehehe
Hi jjgg,
ReplyDeleteThe service outlets will have their own standards to maintain. If they are serving international customers, they will have to train their staff to speak many foreign languages. It is a different issue.
Even then, a PRC Chink in Regis or Ritz would by nature attempt to speak to another Chink in a language she thought would be appropriate. She might be naive to think that not all Chinks can or like to speak the language or refuse to speak Mandarin as a matter of pride.
Here is a case of a Sinkie Chink feeling offended when a PRC Chink spoke to him in Mandarin, and he could do so but refused to. Even if he chose not to speak in Mandarin, he could speak in English without feeling offended.
This is a silly incident when someone felt offended because the other party spoke to him in a language he detested, and worst, an official language of the country? Can you believe that?
//Me am actually making life difficult for some in Sin too. I used to and will be doing it for a long time to come. ReplyDeletei think you are taking it too far, patriot. shouldn't do such things. if a non-chinese speaking person is serving you, you should just carry on speaking to him in english since u can communicate in english. don't make other people's life difficult.
Dear Anon;
ReplyDelete'I will always request another Chinese anywhere to communicate with me in Chinese(Mandarin/Dialects)'
Request is the catch word and more importantly is another Chinese or Chinese looking person.
Most importantly is that me will try to use the others' language.
Thank You very much for the Interaction.

Actually redbean, this issue has been around even before the mainland chinese came along. Remember in the past, many english-educated chinese felt superior to our chinese-educated ones. Some of them were really offended when spoken to in mandarin or dialects. They did not want to be mistaken as "chinese helicopters".
ReplyDeleteThe way I see it, it could be superiority complex and/or a reflection of the resentment towards too many mainland chinese being here. But perhaps we should try to do what Rodney King (God bless his soul)said: "Can we all get along?"
@Afganistan
ReplyDeleteThere are countless Singaporean Chinese who do not speak Mandarin but speak their own dialects, Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese, Hainanese, Hakka. But does it mean they are not Chinese just because they do not or do not choose to speak Mandarin? Some of these people are more Chinese than you seem to think. Is it shameful to speak your own dialect? Having said that I am not saying that I advocate dialects for communication among Chinese because many Chinese don't speak or even understand their own dialects. So the best thing to do is not to force those who do not speak Mandarin if they do not want to. Instead, why not use a common language, i.e. English which every race/community understand as someone here has rightly suggested. This will prevent Mandarin speaking Chinese and dialect speaking Chinese from denigrating each other. Ability to speak Mandarin alone does not make you a Chinese anymore than the ability to speak and write English makes you an Englishman! In any case, the way Singaporeans speak Mandarin is not really Chinese as far as the Chinese in PRC are concerned. In fact it is a source of amusement to them if I may say!
Aiyah redbean, Again too sensitive.
ReplyDeleteEvery small thing make fuck noise. For what?
Fuck the people who cannot communicate with their grandparents/uncles/aunties
ReplyDeleteand oldies around them.
Chapchengs(fake ones) are not
despised for no reason.
Well, this is what that damned PaPigs called for Sinkies to integrate into others' culture. If they come to our country not able to speak English, then too bad for our non-chinese speaking Sinkies who just either have to start learning chinese or not be served by those chinese speaking PRCs.
ReplyDeletei'm anon 11.48. sorry patriot. i did not read your post properly.
ReplyDeleteif u r a chinese/indian/malay and u r fluent in your mother tongue and u refuse to speak in your mother tongue to a person of your own race who can only speak in your mother tongue, then u r a snooty, snobbish bastard who looks down on your own race and language and who make other people's life difficult. u can be snooty or snobbish for all i care but don't make other people's life difficult. you deserved to be condemned.
ReplyDeleteNo problem with me Dear Anon, it is good and nice to have interaction that are sincerely put forth,
ReplyDeleteThank You once again.

Dear Mr. Chua, You are a Singaporean (I think) Chinese and so am I. Why do you use a disparading or derogatory term, "chink" to refer to us Chinese as used by some caucasians if they want to belitte us Chinese?
ReplyDeleteOr am I too sensitive? Likewise, there are also derogatory terms for Indians, Malays, etc which shouldnt be mentioned, not to say written.

ReplyDeleteredbean, please lah. I'm not in uni anymore. If I smoked pot now I'd probably suffocate and die lah. I'm only a few years away from having my drug of choice be cialis or viagra ;-)
ReplyDeleteI find it incredible that a society as developed and as cosmopolitan as Singapore still has so many individuals so hung up about race, racial superiority, inter-racial encounters, sub-divisions of race (Singapore Chinese vs PRC Chinese)...and those individuals are so quick to anger reacting to the slightest perceived innuendo.
ReplyDeleteAsian niggers :-)
Hi Anon 2:00,
ReplyDeleteApologies if you feel slighted by the used of the word chink. I am rubbing it in to make the Chinks become more conscious of the fact that they are known as Chinks to the Westerners. By not saying it, many would still be ostriches hiding their heads in the ground.
Important thing is to come to terms with it and know who we are and know where we stand in the eyes of the pretentious foreigners and deluded white Chinks.
There are many derogatory terms being used against Chinese for centuries by the Westerners. I hope the western educated Chinks come to this realisation and take stock of themselves, remove the blinkers and see the real world.
It is hurting to be called names and be victims of such crass stereotyping and racial slurs. Chinese/Chinks have been held in disdain by the West for centuries and it is time to wake up and be themselves, as Chinese, be it Singapore Chinese, Malaysian Chinese or PRC Chinese.
If the Chinks are not even proud of themselves then they deserved to be called Chinks by the Westerners, to sneer behind their backs, like Abraham Lincoln.
Good that you feel offended and did not want to be called Chinks. The Chinks must not be passive victims and accept it quitely, and pretend that they are not called Chinks behind their backs.
And Matilah, please don't touch those things called viagra or cialis. Go try the more natural way, two capsules of Primrose Oil daily. I was told it would not work instantly but after a few months of intake, your general health will improve, so will your virility.
ReplyDeleteredbean, Thankfully, I'm not there yet ;-)
ReplyDeleteWhen the time comes, I'll be sticking to the science-based (evidence based) solution, not to some flaky ancient quackery created at a time when people were stupider than they are today.
When a cat pretends to be a tiger, it is going against nature. When one forgets about his/her nature of being and his/her origin, time for him/her to pretend to be god, superior in everything, even in idiocy.
ReplyDeleteMatilah_Singapura only needs an experienced one to perk him up.

Ha Bengster,
ReplyDeleteMatilah and me have been fighting for more than 10 years I think. But it is all about differences in opinion, nothing personal.
All bloggers should be friends, disagree with views, no issue.
Matilah will show his fangs when he has a round of toddy, don't worry.
Yah kay-poh kia motherfuckers, don't worry.
ReplyDeleteBTW, I hate toddy, unless it is the London variety. The local toddy stinks like a sardine's cunt.
Bengster, nothing is all good or all bad. Big pharma has benefited mankind, but it is run by humans so you are going to get the whole gamut of "human nature" expressed.
ReplyDeleteIf you cannot think critically, then chances are you are going to get taken for a fool with alarming frequency. Even the most assiduous skeptics and critical thinkers get duped. Scientists with multiple PhD's get fooled. No guarantees there. But you do increase you chances of "bullshit detection" if you are a skeptic.
At least when you are wrong, you can trace backwards to the cause of your errors, because the thinking PROCESS has a method to it.
Once a Chinese couple worked very hard and saved all they could to send their eldest son overseas to study medicine. Eventually the son graduated as a doctor and returned home to set up his own practice with some financial help from his parents. Naturally his parents were very proud of his son's achievement. Then one day his father went to his clinic for consultation. His father was shocked and nearly fainted when after the consultation his son issued him a bill for payment. Worst he felt ashamed to acknowledge his own father to others. This was the last straw that broke the old couple's heart especially the father's.
ReplyDeleteNow what actually happened when the young man went overseas to pursue his dream. Though he had achieved success as a doctor but he had lost the compass of his life. He was so western oriented that he not only lost his original identity and culture but also sold his soul, dignity and self respect to the devils. He told his father that he had to pay him the consultation fee because he had to pay the tax.
This young man is what Premier Zhou En Lai once called a prominent Singapore minister ' a banana man ' because that minister outwardly appeared to be Chinese but his brain, his thinking and his culture in him are white and Western oriented. Similarly many Chinese who go to the West to study have been brainwashed and deculturalised that they think they are also 'Ang Moh' and thus they despised their own kind. If only they know the history of how evil and cruel the 'Ang Mohs' or
Westerners are to Chinese the world over would they ever wake up to the shame of identifying themselves closely with the West.
What can Singapore expect when many of its ministers are really super 'Banana Man' and may be also LC or ramrod man?

Some S'pore citizens would no doubt still remember the day around 1980+ when a PAP high-flyer Dr Tan Hui Heng Augustine, economist humiliated then PAP MP Mr Chan Chee Seng for speaking in Mandarin in Singapore parliament.

Wearing a headband to tell the whole world that "Iam a Sinkie!" whether in Sinkie or overseas? What a langgar idea! Do we have to resort to this.
ReplyDeleteChinese as in generalized, but we are not Chinese. We are Jin/Tang/Han People - the middle people. Chinese refer to the Northerner. We should not even speak Mandarin in the first place. Use back Han Language like our ancestor did. Japanese and Korean writing still retain our tone which we can identify in the dramas.
ReplyDeleteI get you totally. Its worse when singaporeans themselves mistake you to be a PRC just because you have sharper facial features!!! And when you are male, 30 and have darker skin they think you are one of those PRC construction workers!!!! If the official language in Singapore is english just speak english lah!!! And the PAPPIES must NOT BE ELECTED THE NEXT ROUND!!!!! These PRCs should scram back!!!!

When you are all avoiding speaking mandarin even when you understand the language, it makes me as a Chinese Indonesian feel sad. I, for one, have lost my Chinese culture. And in my own country, us Chinese Indonesians are regarded as foreigners by the native. When we are overseas, people treat us as if we are Indonesian.. Not Chinese at all. So, Chinese people in Singapore, appreciate more of what you have got in life.
