Samfoo not allowed in church

This lady in her beautiful pink samfoo was shocked to be told that she would not be welcomed for Sunday mass at the Church of St Anthony in Woodlands. The church has some dress code like wearing of skirts that should not be more than 5cm above the knees. The samfoo is a proper Chinese pant suit that ended 5cm above her ankles.

Let me see what is so offensive about the samfoo. Maybe the warden mistakened 5cm above the knees as 5 cm above the ankles. Maybe the samfoo is offensive to some people. Maybe the samfoo is offensive to God. Maybe the colour pink is offensive.

I really dunno why the samfoo is offensive and not allowed in a church. From the picture of the lady in her samfoo, it was an expensive dress for the Chinese New Year which she must be very proud to be in.

If I am not mistaken, samfoo could be worn something even in formal occasions by the ladies. Hey, it is not the cheap black and white samfoo worn by the Ah Ma chehs of the past. Nowadays many rich ladies are flaunting with their beautiful designers samfoo to look graceful.

No other reason was given except that the samfoo was against the church’s dress code. Maybe the church has its own good reasons. But one thing, please do not insult the beautiful samfoo as it is a popular dress of the locals. If other kinds of dresses are allowed, what is so offensive or demeaning about a samfoo?

  2. Frankly, too little information and unlikely due to pant length.

was the samfoo translucent, or slits upto thigh.

  3. A picture of the lady in her pink samfoo is in the mypaper today. Prim and proper. No slits, no transparency, very formal.

  4. God wasn't offended with just a leaf.

  5. Many of our mothers and grandmothers wore samfoo throughout their lives. This is very insulting. Women wearing samfoos are offending God or his caretakers?

  6. Hey, the said lady will be very welcome to any temple.

Is there any mix-up between samfoo and cheongsam in this case. Samfoo are very simple attires wear by mainly housewives. It is Cheongsam that has slits and also usually tight fitting to show off curvatures.

Are Singaporeans familiar with Samfoo and Cheongsam? Most Singaporean Chinese do not get to see the samfoo nowadays! Most are used to shorts and jeans.

  8. This is a case of overzealousness by one young person.
who may or may not vote for the 40% in the 1st place(the young remember??.
noted, no issue prior week, only now.
    so basically, guidelines became rules?
or maybe, since no interview with the young person, some sharp words?

  12. ReadBean,
What is your view on China's and Russian's recent veto on UN Syria resolution? Why is this not happening in Spore? Just substitute 'Syria' with 'Spore', 'Arab League' with 'ASEAN', with the evil USA + the West seems quite fit though.

    My view:

    UN "justified" resolutions
It would seem that today's journalism is one of convenience, of political and economic survival and half truths, if not flat out lies.
This NO vote by China and Russia was to be EXPECTED; I would go so far as to say that others on the CS would have voted No too, but they knew that the objective would be won with the No of China, Russia or both.
Let's be real....with Libya, as with Syria, we have some biased one side reporting by the Press, perverse third arm used by a so called "International community", to justify all their perverse underhanded designs. Do we ever hear about who these rebels are, what exactly they are up to? Should the world have armed the Tea Party to overthrow Obama? Since WHEN does ANYONE shoot and Kill peaceful protesters? Should governments tolerate armed and violent gangs and thugs? Why does this so called peaceful opposition NOT want to sit and TALK? WHY?....if not because they are being incited by foreign powers wanting to get rid of the Assad regime, and further isolate Iran???

Twice in the LESS THAN ONE YEAR, the CS has overstepped its powers to overthrow governments....in Libya, and in Ivory Coast. Little is said of the perverse role of France and egomaniacal Mr Sarkosy and his quest for grandeur and markets for the morose French economy. He was the initiator of both these deadly and illegal intervention s that destroyed countries and killed tens of thousands of the innocent citizens they were supposed to protect. And in both these cases (Libya and Ivory Coast) the entire social fabric of the countries have been destroyed, armed bands are killing and torturing, and the French are gobbling up entire sectors of the economy, in an effort to "rebuild" (at exorbitant prices) EVERYTHING they DELIBERATELY destroyed.

Is THIS the new world order? IS this the role of the UN?.....Russia and China were dear right in saying NO?
What is so disgusting? Can anyone count the endless vetoes of the United States, in obstructing EVERY veto concerning Israel, and their heavy handed tactics? where lives and entire populations were concerned.

  13. Every country has their little nest of disgruntled people. All it needs is a big fan, financial support and arms and the promise to the gangsters that they could be the new leaders of the country and you have a rebellion at hand.

The communists used to be adept at this, brewing and creating uprising. The same tactics are being applied in these circumstances by the West.

Imagine a foreign power offers financial support and weapons to some of the unhappy people here and promises to back them up all the way, you only need a handful of desperadoes to start the fire and all hell will break loose.

They were trying at Myanmar but Asean would not bite. The Arabs are a pitiful and pathetic people, being led to the slaughter by the West and could not do anything about it. One by one they will fall victims to the West. They are all divided for selfish and personal interests and the whole Arab people suffers.

And they will continue to be bullied and butchered for other people's interests. Allah seems to be less successful than God in protecting its people from harm.

  14. The people must demand to know the identity of the person issuing the order to ban samfoo from church. This is cultural discrimination.

If the person is a foreigner, send him/her packing. We don't need to be insulted by foreigners. And if a local, we also want to know what kind of shit he/she has inside his numbskull.

  15. I guarantee everyone that I am MUCH MORE OFFENSIVE than a samfoo can ever be in a church.

A samfoo, properly worn casts the "attractive female bits" in a favourable light.

Me OTOH will make verbal reference to human genetalia, relating especially to jesus and his mum.

Does the pope give god blowjobs?

  16. To the lady in samfoo - don't worry, that church won't let God in as well.

  18. The govt should say something with regards to respecting difference culture and dressing style. No organisation should be allowed to show disrespect to other people's culture or dressing that are decent and proper.

Would someone be thinking of banning sari because it bears the middle part of the body? Sari is a respectable national dress of the Indian community and very well regarded in all parts of the world.

Basically, no one must be allowed to show disrespect to other people's accepted way of life under whatever excuses.
