Medicare for Senior Citizens

Malaysia - Senior citizens can look forward to a healthy start to the new year - they can seek outpatient treatment at government hospitals and clinics without having to fork out a single sen.

Effective yesterday, the Government abolished the token RM1 (S$40 cents) payment senior citizens needed to pay each time they sought such treatment.
The Health Ministry announced in its latest circular that patients aged 60 and above would be exempted from making any payment for outpatient treatment at government hospitals and clinics.

This means that these patients will enjoy medical consultation, check-ups and medication at no charge at all.

The circular, issued by ministry's finance division secretary Wong Foong Lai, stated that the exemption was in appreciation of the contributions made by senior citizens.

Senior citizens would only have to pay a nominal fee if they required specialist care, treatment or hospitalisation…

If the above were to be in the ST all Singaporeans will know that it must be a joke. But that is real in Malaysia. If only our govt were to treat our seniors better and provide them free medical consultation in poly clinics for common illnesses and cough and colds where no hospitalisation and expensive medical treatment are needed. Our govt is so much richer than Malaysia. If they can afford it, why can’t we? Ok, asking for anything free is like asking to eat in hawker centre, foodcourt or restaurant. How about charging a flat fee of $3 or $5 for the seniors, and NO MEAN TESTING needed?

Many oldies are finding basic healthcare cost quite unbearable. It would be a dream start for 2012. But as they said, tan ku ku. There is no free lunch in paradise. If any oldie is thinking of getting free medical care, try to get admitted into a charity home and go perform in one of the charity shows on TV, and show the world how pathetic and pitiful he is. Then only will he get some charity for free.

  1. It's better to invest away our billions of dollars of reserves in foreign banks (USA, European & Pakistan etc...).
Aren't the Europeans and Pakistanis more deserving than Singaporeans?

Why waste money on free medical care for old Singaporeans?
a)The oldies will vote for the deaf frogs anyway.

b)the children are required by law to pay for their old parents medical care anyway.

c)the children will vote for the deaf frogs anyway.

d)and the children need to hire a maid to look after their old parents because there is insufficient old folks homes.
And the best part is that they have to pay a maid's levy!!

The maid's levy is really a tax on filial piety. And the children are too stupid to realize it.

And the entire dumb family continue to vote for the deaf frogs! Even the new deaf & dumb frog called TPL! Unbelievable!

These dumb old folks and their equally dumb children deserve to be exploited.
They got the government they deserve.

  2. Free or almost free medical has already been implemented ... hmmmm ie, for ministers. Only $8 for heart bypass. We've already beaten Malaysia to it.No way we can let Malasia beat us!

  3. Socilised medicine can never work long term. UK and Canadian "free healthcare" systems are in deep shit, resulting in people suffering and dying due to shortages.

Malaysia and their welfare entitlement mentality is doomed

  4. I don't think any govt will go broke for subsidising cough and colds and the little illments that GPs can dealt with, and no need to pay $30 or $50 for some Vit C or panadol or cold drops.

As for those big ticket items in hospitals that go up to tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands, no body dares to talk about subsidy. They just prepared to go broke when the bill arrives.

    Can't be helped.

    > > I don't think any govt will go broke for subsidising

    Famous last words ;-)

The problem is, once the reason and purpose for socialised medicine has been established, the scope of the "entitlement" will expand over time. Why? Politics. Election promises. Straight out vote-buying. Kiss democracy goodbye.

Welfare statism threatens freedom (on a personal level), and democracy (at the societal level)

  6. Why are you quoting me half way and not including minor ailments like cough and cold? Or you already agree that subsidizing minor ailments won't bankrupt a govt?

  7. The point I'm. aking is that it won't just STAY at your small subsidy. Overtime political pressure and competition for votes will see the subsidy "extended" to other areas.

State welfare is like cancer. It starts small and spreads to engulf the payers and the recievers. Just tax people more.

Private welfare aka "charity" starts small and stays small. They always struggle for money. Which makes them more accountable and careful.

  8. You mean like the minimum sum, starting small and keeps growing and staying away longer and longer from their rightful owners?

All it needs is to slam the people by asking them if they want hawker centre, foodcourt or restaurant and the problem will stop there.

  9. Exactly. Once invited into, or forced into your life, government influence and/or interference increases in depth, scope and power over time.

Remember at one time you got ALL "your" CPF at age 55? When the Ponzi Scheme is at early days it is possible to "prove" that the illusion is "real". Once belief in the "integrity of the scheme" is established, you can then get away with anything in the future. Ie once the FALSE BELIEF of "Ownership" in CPF is established, people will continue to believe that the money is theirs.

Fuckers like me who suggest otherwise (that CPF is sunken money -- water under the bridge) will be attacked. Ie I become "the bad guy" so that people can hold onto their false beliefs and exert "rights" which do not exist in reality nor in law.

Can you blame me from occasionally enjoying a sadistic pleasure from the ignorance and arrogance of fools? :-)
