Alvin Yeo makes good sense

Be realistic and compares apple with apple. Alvin Yeo brought out an interesting point, that the political leaders of UK and US came from wealthy background and could afford to take lower salary. He quoted a few British politicians with net worth of 4 or 5 million pounds with the Cameron’s waiting to inherit a 30m pound fortune. For those with 4m or 5m pounds, actually ‘sub sub suey’ compare to our politician’s wealth.

The American leaders are worth more, in the region of $100m or $200m. So they can afford to take in lesser salaries. This is an excellent point.
I do not know how wealthy are our ministers, but I think they are worth not less than the Brits and Americans, except for a few. Or they were not that rich before joining politics.

What is important is that if we want to attract the best, the rich or big income earners, we must go for it, get the really rich to serve. And the irony is that the really rich in the US and UK don’t need to be fed more to be fatter. Are our really rich the same as them, or they are different, that they need to be fatter cats? Even without taking the calculator or computer, one can easily conclude that the top 1000 high income earners would worth as much as the British and American leaders and should not be eyeing for more money.

The whole argument seems to go round and round. They are so rich, they need not be paid so much. And then we need to attract these very rich and need to pay them more? They would not be happy with less? Maybe as a non talent, I am unable to grasp the brilliance or logic in the argument. Really pai seh.

  1. "Chua Chu Kang GRC MP Alvin Yeo was dumb enough to cite Barack Obama has a net worth of US$7.3 million, "thanks to his book sales." Many a minister in the cabinet has not penned a single volume... yet you can safely bet each of their net worth is easily more than twice that of the US President. Just take a look at their residential addresses."

  2. Which one of our Sin politician was ever asked to serve the state or the people?
In fact, Singaporeans would be more than happy to have the cabinet slash by half or more.
Who the hell need some of those soldier boys and school girl like people to rule us. They think all Sinkies can be fooled?

  3. Salaries of parliamentarians and politicians in other cuntrees are nothing more than artifacts to be observed.

How you interpret it is so subjective. You can also argue that other cuntrees are in deep shit because their politicians are of low quality and thus only deserve to be paid as "small timers".

Singapore is unique. Singapore culture is very unique.

It never ceases to amaze me how bloggers can allow their mind to wander away from this FACT OF REALITY.

  5. Fallacy which I need to correct right here and now:

    >> They are so rich, they need not be paid so much. <

Obviously you never attended ACS. The richer you are the more money you require.

If you are poor, you will always earn low wages.

Another fact of reality. Another Myth Busted.

  6. Maybe this line of reasoning should get all condo residents to start thinking about paying their neighbors top dollars to take "political office" in managing council? Apparently, this volunteer thingie has not been attracting residents to serve the community?

  7. for many years..professionals have been offering their time(freely) to make a difference in their estates - and it worked mostly. it will be interesting to watch how the estate dynamic changes when neighbors start talking about paying neighbors to manage the estate.

though the scale is different, the principle, and logic, should be the same.

if we dare apply the same logic, i think it will be ugly.

    The more the PAPies talk.
The deeper the hole they dig themselves in.

    If it looks like shit.
    If it smells like shit.
    If it feels like shit.
    If it tastes like shit.

    It's probably bullshit.

  12. The Great Divide....Opposition MPs and greater Singaporean public says that politics is a calling...Government and PAP says that politics is a career move...how to narrow the gap? Talk and more talk is simply waste of time...whether its utterances by big time politicians or little little Alvin Yeo..so long as Parliament doesn't vote with its own conscience...WAYANG WAYANG WAYANG!!!!!

  13. Many people respect Mr Chen Show Mao because of his sacrifices.

Others may also sacrifice, especially from opposition but none as obvious as Mr Chen.To the extent that some in PAP call him a talk cock retiree at 50 years old.

I hope to see some "talk cock young retirees" from PAP in future elections, the only condition is that they should donate their million salaries to charities.

  14. It is really scary seeing how they try to defend an indefensible cause. Those who honestly know that it is a bad case to defend it is wiser to just shut up and avoid being dragged into the same shit hole.

  16. They talk so much about other benefits that politicans receive in other countries. Talk about Obama's Air Force One. Someone has suggested that we provide an Air Force One to fly our ministers from Punggol to Tanjong Pagar; from Clementi to East Coast; etc. Sounds like a cool n great idea.

  17. Cannot lah. How to fly Air Force One from Punggol to Tg Pagar or Clementi to East Coast? Cannot lah. I think just park the Air Force One in the Istana, Ok liao. Swee Swee.

  18. btw, managing agents compete to provide the lowest price for the best service, not highest price for best services. those NOT DOING THE REAL WORK(overseer)are just happy to see their estates run well and the neighbors happy and appreciative...that's their REWARD, not money as THEY EARN THEIR OWN KEEP( real job and income)!

Grace Fu is a minister without grace and is very ungracious to the city which wrongly and illegally pay her and her fellow ministers so much for doing so little that is worthy to Singapore. She has openly shown her disssatisfaction from her heart and if we are not mistaken she is symbolic of most of the ministers and PAP MPs in mind and spirit in their real colours to serve the country for the sake of money and not for anything else. In the meantime her colleague Tony Tan who ran aground GIC and caused Singapore to lose more than 42 billion dollars can still be a President collecting millions of dollars in obscene salary for the next six years.

Paying themselves obscene high salaries is bad enough but what is worse is that they burden the people with all sorts of unreasonable tax via high PUB charges, high transport fees in SBS and SMRT, high medical cost, high property tax, high cost of COEs and ERPs and a myriad of other hidden charges as in GST.

To top their sin they have ignored the welfare of the people causing untold suffering to hundreds of thousands of Singaporeans who are suffering in silence. Every year thousands of Singaporeans have died unnecessarily from cancer, heart disease, kidney trouble and diabetes because they cannot afford the high cost of medical treatment. For many who survive the diseases they are greatly impoverished as they have to sell their house to repay huge loans from friends and relatives and from loan sharks.

If the PAP government has any conscience it should sincerely lighten the people's burden and suffering by reducing taxes, abolish GST for medical and hospital charges, reduce medical
cost and help the poor and middle class in other ways.

PAP ministers and MPs should wake up and stop being self serving and hypocrital in claiming that they want to serve the people when it is actually the Money God they are serving and that's the reason their obscene high salary is never high enough. They must sincerely change or the people will change them in 2016.

  24. What Alvin said is that rich people don't need more money to come out and serve the country. There is no need to attract the top 1000 high income earners to serve the country with money. They have too much already.

This is the biggest flaw in the whole argument to peg to the top 1000.

They will come to serve if the political culture is less abusive and destructive. What is abusive and destructive about our political culture that kept all the good men from coming out to serve, the answer can be found from those who run road or ended up as bankrupts. Just ask them.

When the political climate is conducive, many people will come out to serve, and will not ask to be paid like greedy pigs.

  25. "Talk cock retiree" Mr Chen Show Mao joined WP when he was 47 years old,he is now 50 Years old, according to my calculation,he has at least another 20 years of active contribution remained.

  26. "he has at least another 20 years of active contribution remained". Unquote.

Can anyone say for sure that Mr Chen S Mao will stay in local politic for the next 20 yrs? Or for the matter, remain in Sg for the next 20yrs?

No one can say anything for certain. However I'll bet hard cash that the PAP will be returned to power next election.

The people get the government they deserve, folks.

You can knock yourself out about this kua semi lanchiau theory or the other, the fact remains -- CULTURE folks. It ain't rational. It ain't objective. It's fully human meaning its based on EMOTION.

Still don't get it? No problem. Your suffering entertains me ;-)

The political price is going to be heavy as many are not the least convinced of the arguments any more.

Please note -- I have no dog in any fight. I am definitely NOT a PAP supporter, nor do I support anything political. My motivation for understanding is based completely on SELF INTEREST so that I'm able to dodge the bad stuff, capitalise on the good stuff, and attain MAXIMUM FREEDOM to do, say, and be what and who I want, without any involuntary "obligation " to some other fuck heads "expectations".

As long as Singapore remains a Hotel for selfish indulgence, I'm a haapy guy. I couldn't care less who is running it, who is corrupt, how much they make. Fuck all that Asian, yes Asian Asshole Parochial Shit.
