SGX well run and going places

This is about what summed up Goh Eng Yeow’s article about SGX today in ST. Everything is so excellently managed, good governance, good system, advanced hardware, actually it is near perfection, including profits, it could be the number One stock exchange in the world.

I just hope he knows what he is talking about. My observation is that in the next 6 to 12 months it may implode. Just wait and watch. I hope I am wrong. I pray Goh Eng Yeow is right.

  1. Red Bean Agree. They installed the fastest computer transaction inplace ( something like 3000 tades per second ) . Fastest , Bestest , greatestest .... it will all come to roost one day...can spell Flash Crash ? Already as things stand, the retails are taken to the cleaners with all the algorihom driven trades... who pays sinkies ... of course, needless to say

  2. Healthy skepticism is good.

I wouldn't have expected anything less from th SGX. Singapore afterall is a financial titan.

Everyone expects markets to correct severely, but I don't one can ascribed some sort of cause of a future event to an agency in the present. By doing so, you are making a claim without EVIDENCE

  3. M_S - one cannot expect "things" to happen with any certainty. Such as recent SMRT fiasco as an example , the cause of the failure has to be because f incompetencies at many levels, unless one believes it's a deliberate act. Coming back to current topic, That's what Flash Crashes are about. Algorithom driven transaction, ever read deeply into the cause of great stock market crash of 1927 ??

  4. I'm a picky bastard when it comes to matters of skepticism.

    > one cannot expect "things" to happen with any certainty <

On the contrary. Peoples' expectations are based on certainty as a fact.

HOWEVER, whether or not things occur is a matter of probability . But the human mind is "wired" for causality/ certainty NOT uncertainty/ probability.

Scientific and/or skeptical thinking has to be learnt. It is not the "default" setting of the human brain.

Matilah, can I laugh at this statement of yours? Our minds are questioning by default. Look at how the children will question, the why, why, why? You have no such experience right?

It is the conditioning of the mind by the power that be that rewired a 'by default' questioning mind into a robotic unthinking one. Just do as you are told. Do not question the wise one. If you do, the cane will come down hard.

  6. Nothining in life is a certaintly except for 2 things. So , is it skepticism or is it just good old observation of certainty? M_S , I certainly expect your skeptical opinion.

  7. redbean: First of all I don't believe in "mind". It is the brain which is objectively provable.

Secondly, I agree we all question, but that doesn't mean scientific thinking is "default". Our brain constructs answers to questions by its tendency to agentnicity and patternicity.

Too long to explain. Anyway there are people far smarter than a humble beach bum me, and who do a much better job, having book sales in the millions to back up their stellar reputations.

My skeptical opinion is I don't know.

My tendency to favour a position (personal choice, I could be wrong) is that I lean toward skepticism.

  11. Please Lah Ah M-S ( may I call you that ? ) , when you say your skeptial opinion is that you don't know , you have already stated your own certainty which is : you don't know. It is no longer a skepticism. What happened to your "oh so solid logical mind?? "... deh ... I am disappointed at you feeble response.

  15. Matilah, a brain is just a piece of tissue. Have you seen a piece of brain in a bottle? Dead brain, brain dead.

You only got brain but no mind, you don't believe in mind. Ok, I am not going to waste my time defining what is a mind. Some may use the term consciousness.

Whatever, the mind or consciousness is the thing that makes you alive, thinking, not the dead brain or live brain fed by drips. Without the consciousness, you won't be thinking, or your brain would not be thinking, perhaps can be kept alive biologically, but lifeless, unthinking.

  16. Back to Topic. Another example of FT CEO running SGX. Failed attempts at swallowing BIG fish... now intro super high speed trade computers ... next when things go south ... sinkie cry foul why let FT run company. See the pattern ?? God to KPKB... but... after all that... back to reality getting screwed royally ... Red Bean , good to rouse the half-dead unconscious sinkie mentality but ... do sinkies have the moral courage to make a change ?? History is not on our side.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Do you think your consciousness is "real" just because you think you can think? Hahha. You're funny lah.

It's good that you don't go any further...no one knows FOR SURE ok? The brain IS just a piece of tissue (provable evidence). However that "tissue" is capable of many wonderful things...

  18. On Consciousness

Anyway, I state my position clearly -- agree or disagree according to your choice (I don't really give a fuck):

What we call "consciousness" is IMO an epiphenomenon i.e. a by-product of physical materials engaging in material processes... i.e. the brain doing what brains do -- processing stimuli and information, outputting responses etc.

IMO "consciousness" (or "soul") is not an "immaterial" phenomena, because there is no evidence for some "immaterial" realm -- like heaven, hell or whatever fantasy you care to imagine.

i.e. Consciousness is an illusion. But man, what a fantastic illusion!!

  19. Red Bean. Hats off to you , I am enjoying your blog daily. The unique feature is the presence of a shadow blogger aka M_S. He is such a sport. Makes me wonder , if he is not your altered ego ala jekyll and Hyde?? kekeke .. sinkies->sink , sank , sunk.

  20. Just a dose of healthy skepticism, naturally.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Matilah, you want proof or else tak pakai. What is this nonsense 'a by-product of physical materials engaging in material processes...' You can prove what they are?

The brain generates the mind or consciousness? Look at those bodies lying unconscious, oh there is such a word, a lack of consciousness, in the hospital beds. Their brains and bodies are functioning. But where is the consciousness?

Should not the brain be generating the consciousness? No, the brain can't generate consciousness. When the consciousness is not there, the brain can keep sending signals to all its synapses, nothing happens. Dead, brain dead.

Oh, the MS is like the anti Christ, here anti Matilah. Definitely not me. He is another living consciousness.

  22. Actually this thread is about how well run is the SGX. Can anyone tell me what is the difference between the stock market and the jackpot machine?

I know that the jackpot machine is run by computers and every time someone puts in a coin, it will compute quickly whether to pay and swallow the coin. And most of the time computer just swallow based on its odds.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Both are gambling. With both , yu go in with yur eyes open. The stock market needs participants so do jackpot machines. SGX is the zeng geh , so it wins all the time. So , by logic , if you invest in the zeng geh SGX , you will not lose cos zeng geh always wins.

  26. For a lowly educated person, i get most of my knowledge here. Some factual(scientific) and some spiritual(philosophical) and that make a most enlightening lesson for me. One exorcises superstition and stupidity, another nourishes the soul
Thank You folks, keep more coming!

  27. Haha Anon 1:58, Matilah will be a happy man. No, actually a happy preacher, a new age preacher of truths.

  28. Redbean,

Like I said, I don't give a fuck if you agree with my position on consciousness or not.

I have provided you with ample sources to go figure out for yourself, and if you have the guts, to challenge your own assumptions.

  30. Hehe...

whence MS goes into high spirit
he forgets much of his consciousness.
However, be reminded that though he is very much made of science, be assured that this Man has conscience.
And i am not saying he is conned by science or he is conning others with science. I am saying that other than facts the Man does make sense(sensibility).

    ReplyDelete
  31. anon 358

    > be assured that this Man has conscience. <

Do you mean "conscience" or "consciousness". I think you mean the latter, although you typed the former.

EVERYBODY'S brain (mind is what the brain creates) plays tricks on them. There is no escape. BUT there are procedures you can use to MINIMISE the Type 1 and Type 2 errors, and errors of cognition.

    Predictably Irrational

    ReplyDelete
  32. Mr Matilah;

the Answer is conscience(conscientiousness) as in one having sense of right and wrong(moral). And with the ability to help others, sympathize others and to protect the weak etc.

However, just suspect that when You are doing the good deeds You are not aware of what You are doing, like it is involuntary.
BUT, when You are out to kill, it is intention intensified; do believe You don't rape or killed as You have declared as You do amply exhibit conscientiousness. Some folks just look fierce but, they have hearts made of lollipop, hard but melts quite easily.

  33. Both only care about their own bottom line. Commuters or investors, die their own business. Both superficially look like damn good, but really rotting inside and waiting to blow up.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Anon 421.

    Ok, thanks for clarification.

Every thing you said can be explained scientifically -- ie resulting from purely naturalistic processess. No "superstition" or immaterial realms required.

Even morality (goodness and evil) have a scientific explanation.

But you are quite correct: one should remain skeptical about ALL claims including claims made on scientific basis. Lots of con jobs use (fake) "science" to bullshit the unsuspecting.

Just step into any pharmacy and see for yourself : vitamin pills -- BULLSHIT. Unless you're medically diagnosed with a deficiency, vitamin pills DO NOT WORK.

The same goes for TCM aka traditional Chinese medicine. Some of it works, most of it -- like the idea of "chi" or "qi" is bullshit.

Both vitamin manufacturers and purveyors of TCM use "science" to fool gullible and science-ignorant people into parting with their ca$$h.

    Caveat emptor!

  35. Set up independent regulatory body to takeover that role from SGX. Urgently.

The industry cannot be allowed to self regulate. There must be a strong regulator.

THe above are obviously what is needed given what we see to be the causes of problems in US/Europe' institutions, banking and securities sectors.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Anon 1120 , better said than done ! Yahhh Rightt ... regulatory body to be set up by pappy to regulate SGX ? Dun spew shite .
