While there is still time
For the good of the country, LKY must divorce himself from all aspects of govt while he still can. Goh Keng Swee was also a giant in Singapore politics. His passing away did not rock the boat and life goes on as usual. It should also be the case for LKY. But this is not going to be if LKY is still in the thick of govt and the sudden eclipse of his overwhelming presence will trigger a shock, and foreign funds will use the opportunity to sell down the stock market for sure. It may be a knee jerk reaction but the damage can be severe.
There is still time to prevent this day from happening. LKY should retire completely and be out of the picture to let the govt run without him. There is a need for a transition period for the world to know that nothing changes with or without him in charge or in the govt. His fading away is good for the country and for everyone.
No one knows how long he will be around and the earlier he takes step towards this end will give the govt that much more time to run on its own. It will also prevent the doomsayers from creating havoc at the crucial moment when it arrives. As long as he continues to grant audience to state dignitaries, there is no doubt who is in charge of the country.
LKY owes it to Singaporeans to make the transition of Singapore without him as smooth and uneventful as possible. That will be his last great contribution for the country.
Walau, U r literally asking for the impossible man.
ReplyDeleteSorry but LKY can't divorce himself from the Singapore govt even if he wants to. His son is the Prime Minister for one thing and he is justt too tightly interwoven to the fabric of Singapore. Even if he announced a retirement tomorrow, no one will believe it.
ReplyDeleteWhy is there always this presumption that his passing away will rock the boat?
ReplyDeleteIt is all fear mongering that will create the uncertainty.
Let me take an example. Before Hougang and Potong Pasir fell to the opposition, the PAP tried to instil fear in residents of these two constituencies and others, that if the opposition wins in Hougang, the estate will not be looked after, rubbish will pile up to the 3rd storey and Hougang will become a slum. Did that happen?
Despite the denial of upgrading and given less funding, Hougang is as clean as any PAP managed estate, if not cleaner.
No man is indispensable. It is we, the people, who created this image of his indispensability.
Wake up!

Depends what the situation is. If you are seriously wounded and there is only 1 doctor at the time, that man is indispensable if you are to have any hope of survival.
However there is one undeniable truth:
Everyone dies.
NETIZENS REJOICING OVER LEE KUAN YEW’S PAIN?? WHY?
ReplyDeleteHow on earth did some people still get the idea that 'he did not get all out to harm people'. I guess some people's impression of harming people just means stabbing them with a knife or shooting them with a gun.
ReplyDeleteSure, his efforts to improve this nation cannot be denied, but is destroying people financially, putting them away without trial, breaking up families in the process, and punishing citizens just who exercised their rights to choose their political affiliation etc the one and only way to improve this country?
Yes, come on, put yourself in the shoes of Francis Seow, Tang Liang Hong, Lim Hock Siew, Vincent Cheng and numerous others and if you still think there should be no disrespect, I rest my case.
Everyone reaps what he sowed. No exceptions.

ReplyDeleteWake up and smell the kopi-oh. Politics is a "game", and there are no "rules", in the sense that even if there are rules there is no "authority" to enforce them.
Therefore in politics, anything goes. I find politics the most distasteful of all human activity, so I'm not defending it.
We are at the biological core, primates -- apes. Apes with big brains and over active adrenal glands.
redbean:
Surely you jest. "Evil" gets away with stuff everyday, and has been doing so since the beginning of time. Sometimes, there is "justice", but many times "evil" gets away scot-free.
Anyway, what do you consider "evil"? In the realm of politics it is completely AMORAL -- if you don't defend your political interests, you'll be eaten up. So you have to do what you have to do and damn the "moral compass".
"Morality" is a human invention -- especially when dealing with higher-order concepts like "good and evil".
I repeat:
We are at the biological core, primates -- apes. Apes with big brains and over active adrenal glands.
And I add:
If you observe ape-behaviour, you'll know how primates behave: sometimes they cooperate, and at other times it is a battle of status and pride. Apes have been observed to act deceitfully and with cunning, they also plot revenge. If they do this what then of us -- the humans -- with better developed neural mechanisms (ie. neo-cortex and frontal lobes) which we are able to use to plot complex strategies, form opinions and judge others.

Chimpanzee Behaviour
Love and Murder Among the Chimps
Human and chimp DNA only differ by about 2%, which is why chimps are studied so much. Anyone who has seen or been with a chimp will undoubtedly attest to how "human-like" they are.
The problem I find is that people often go to the concepts of "good and evil" and "karma" when they're discussing objectionable human behaviour. And that to me is really lazy thinking and believing -- without question -- age old myths about "morality" and how humans "ought to behave" , of course as prescribed by "other humans" who consider themselves to be "morally superior" to their less-behaved kin.
Apes/ primates are social animals. And when you have a group, politics or something resembling politics evolves. Self-ascribed "leaders" try their luck and take charge of the group, thwarting any attempts by usurpers who try to "grab power".
So if you fancy yourself as a "political animal", you are quite in effect one with nature -- your natural, ape, monkey self.
Have a banana and relax.
May the almighties come to save the wicked humans.
