SDP going for the kill

Chee Soon Juan and his supporters were at Bukit Panjang talking to the wet market stallholders on the recent rental hike. He has a cause to champion and at the moment it seems that the SDP is the first political party that is seizing on this opportunity to win more supporters. Not only will they be getting the votes from the disgruntled stallholders, the aunties who are clamouring to have their rights to wet markets will go along as well. An issue like this will be another feather in the SDP's cap. They went in to answer a call when others are staying clear. Let's see if SDP could reap any rewards from this issue. If the wet market stallholders feel that when help is needed and no one came except SDP, it could make a difference.

  1. They are that. Opportunists. More form than substance. Whilst they are the most vociferous, the end result is still a dismal showing in past elections otherwise some of them would have got in as NMPs.

Whilst it is good to appear gungho, they must remember that Singaporeans by and large are a pretty laid up lot. No Thai or Philippine style politics for them. Everything must be within the law and be seen to be orderly and peaceful. Our future and the future of our children depends on it.

The Reform party is a good bet.

  2. Don't say that I am throwing cold water, but the ending of the story would still be 'lightning and thunder' rules supreme.

What can a few disgruntled uncles and aunties do? The rulers could easily neutralize that by giving more 'jobs with citizenship' to foreigners, who will definitely return the favour. Why do you think they are asking Singaporeans to 'bonk' with foreigners ever so often. It figures.

  3. SDP needs support fires from the local people instead of looking for oversea assistance.

The connections with the locals are very much lacking and great effort is needed here.

PAP having the majority votes is beyond doubt, however it will lose some wards to oppositions is also as sure as tomorrow's sunrise.

Opposition members are very much desired and needed. The people have to play a part in making this a reality. Do it; let everybody knows, it can be done.

  4. SDP's public image has been quite bad for the last few elections. They really need a PR job to do some damage control.

Now we are not sure how sour is the ground. If it is really that bad, then anything goes.

  5. Actually the news clips told a very different story. The stall holders, instead of embracing Chee and his group, refused to accept the leaflets handed to them and kept at a careful distance. All these caught in camera.

  6. Chee and his sister had wasted too much precious time bickering with the Ruling Politicians. Much of his time were also spent with Universal Human Rights Activities abroad. He was too idealistic thinking that the average politically apathetic Singaporeans can understand his lofty ambition, unfortunately Singaporeans are not as enlightened as he had taken them to be.

Though he don't speaks with english twang, his sister does, he comes across as a typical westernized Chinese, unlikely to endear him and his sister to the crowds. They should bring themselves down to the level of the people.

Me am not impressed with his (too)idealistic approach and also his projection of sole proprietor style control of his party which Chiam See Tong and Low Thia Khiang are just as guilty off. In the case of Low(WP), his Deputy Sylvia does have some says in her Party as well as in Parliament. Political Parties will do well to have some capable deputies that will give voters some confidences as well as to show themselves to be less autocratic and selfish.

SDP or rather Chee and his sister have to demolished the barrier they kind of create by their 'high brow' images and spend no time at all to squabble with dying and power waning folks. Instead his whole party members should concentrate on building relations with the people. Hope they will prioritize Singaporeans over international issues and be constantly mindful of it.

  8. Strange that the CNA wants to show stallholders not taking the leaflets, the only ones that didn't take them were the ones who were busy with their shop.

I was there and I personally witnessed stallholders smiling and welcoming the SDP, taking the leaflets and reading them.

Here are 2 articles with photographs:

  9. Hi Seelan, welcome to the blog.

Let me try to recall, if anyone can get hold of that newsclip, I think one took and two did not and you could see that they were very conscious of the camera. Kind of uncomfortable.

  10. For the best possible observation, you would have to be there when it was ongoing. Can we trust the editors of CNA to give the best picture in the first place? I suppose SDP have to be thankful for the coverage for our state controlled media. Remember the type of coverage from the state media at the 2006 elections?

  11. Absolutely Sylvester, agree with you. What we see in the media is subject to what the editors want the viewer to read or see.

Readers reading here will have a different perspective of things and so will viewers reading the respective political forums/blogs.

People should be discriminating and read with an inquisitive min, and bear in mind the source of the information and what it would want to present.

  12. The PAP is really stupid in a sense it is the least political savvy party of all time.

That is the problem when you are unchallenged for decades -- you get soft, and arrogant.

SDP will gain lots more supporters because of Lee Kuan Yew's arrogance that his world view is the right view, and don't you forget it.

The fucker needs to disappear. He's out grown his usefullness.

  13. nowadays, one should not trust the CNA too much. we should view the CNA with a pinch of salt. Is Mr Chee too "lofty"? i believe that isn't too important. What is outstanding about Mr Chee is that he/SDP dare to inform the public about what the ruling party are doing against the singaporeans. I have visit the SDP Website, very impressively with the articles.

  14. We all know that Chee's image had taken a big knock. And he allowed himself to fall into the pit dug out for him.

Chee should engage a PR manager to remake his public persona. The unthinking masses just take things at face value.

I think your description of being "outstanding" is stretching it way out of the ballpark. The way you use the word really diminishes its value.

There's nothing "outstanding" about stating the obvious. Most people know what's going on -- they just prefer to shut up about it and get on with the things that really matter in their lives: their family, careers etc. and have "rational ignorance" about their plutocratic political system.

To be "outstanding" one has to perform actions that actually achieve something of "value" -- like a Thomas Jefferson, for example. So far this has not happened.
