Eunice Chew Li Xin

Another pathetic story of a 14 year old girl who died unnecessarily in this very unforgiving city state when you can't go on living without money. According to the story in AsiaOne online, her mother was so broke that she had not eaten for a few days. This 14 year old girl had to work in fast food outlets to buy food for the jobless mother who is also having medical problem. Her parents were divorced. And Eunice was stabbed to death by her mother, probably in a state of despair after days of hunger pangs. No matter how wide is the safety net, as long as the cost of living is high, there will be many that will not be discovered and will continue to live in a life of drudgery. Wonder if they qualify or were on public assistance programme. In a country that is so kind and compassionate to the losers in life, we need not do anything to be cruel.

  1. How much does she earn from working in a hamburger chain anyway? Its sad that a family is wasted, who knows how many more families are facing the same situation out there?

The only consolation is that the fast food chain can now hire another elderly on their pathetic pay scheme. I wonder whether the fast food chain gets any JCS for each of their part time workers or not?

  2. the mother is jobless because of medical problem. it was the little girl that was doing part time job to help out. she has a sister whose income is barely enough for herself.

  3. I am saddened beyond words when I heard the news and my grief was worsened by a suicide case of a man of about thirty year old at Bedok Reservoir in the evening on the same day.

Why are Singaporeans having to suffer such fate ?

  4. Just wondering. Is it possible in Singapore to have nothing to eat for four days? And while the amount may be small, they should have received some GST offset cheques recently.

The mother and the elder daughter reportedly smokes and drinks. Perhaps that's where all the money went to instead of food.

The victim's school should have spotted signs of a dysfunctional family and provided some sort of help. It is a little too late to say that they will provide all necessary help to the family.

  5. hi speechless beyond words,

welcome to the blog. agree that it is difficult for someone to go without food for a few days. it could be an exaggeration. maybe going without a decent meal for days, scrimping on some left overs or biscuits, bread or instant noodles.

it is a dysfuncitonal family alright and the poor victims are the children. it is a nightmare to be brought into this world in such a family. beyond words indeed.

  8. redbean, if you didn't bother/couldn't/didn't know to help this person why are you doing the silly thing of judging the rest of the people in 'society'?

How do you go from a mother who murders her kid, to a judgement about 'compassion'?

  9. no i am bothered. i am concerned. i am annoyed. but why should i do anything, not that i did not do anything, when we paid the best salaries for the best talents to look after these problematic people.

we don't pay good money for nothing and ended we still have to bother. if i am recipients of those kind of money, i will do everything within my means to justify my pay.

Which universe are you living in? That premise is most certainly incorrect.
