A vote of confidence for Tan Kin Lian
Tan Kin Lian is the new breed of politicians appearing on the scene in troubled times like this. This is a politician that comes from a different mould, with different ideas and values. Tan Kin Lian is offering the people a new kind of politicians that will change the political landscape and new ways of doing things. He is still collecting his 100,000 signatures, which is a sign of how much the people wanting a change. He is not perfect for sure. I wonder if there is any politician that is perfect or godlike.
I am not sure how many people following this forum/blog will give him a vote of confidence. I for one will give him mine. I think he is as good as any politician in Parliament today. I no longer feel comfortable with the new values and ways of doing things and a change with credible people is good for everyone.

ReplyDeleteInitially, I do think he is a pretty good candidate for the Elected Presidency Post.
ReplyDeleteLately, I feelings towards him changed. In many issues he spoke on and his blogs, I felt his thinking is too superficial and his thought processes does not penetrate deep enough. In fact, lately, I think the more he speak, the more mistakes he make.
To anon 1133,
ReplyDeleteBut he is still the best we have got out there. At least he is making himself visible and wants changes to the system. Whether he can think is another thing, doesn't really matter if he have other supporters who can think. Most important is whether he can make these thoughts be realized.
Then again, whether he wins a seat as a MP or as a president (if he can win in the 1st place), does it make a difference? Too few Singaporeans want change, maybe a 1000 or two think there is the need for change. But far too many are apathetic and more concerned about satisfying their own needs first then think of the bigger picture: how policies actually affect their lives and whether the PAP gahmen is living in a ivory tower and not see the realities.
hi DB10, welcome to the blog.
ReplyDeleteat this point of the game a good man to challenge the conventional wisdom and prevailing thoughts will be good enough. tan kin lian has shown the tenacity to pursue an issue to its rightful conclusion. many people would have given up the minibond issue by now.
he has done a lot of good to open up the minibond case and add in some pressure for it to be handled more expeditiously. i wonder what would have happened if he did not step in. probably nothing happens.
While I think that the current team in office is impeccable and very able, I disagree with the argument that we dun need an opposing party in parliament or that we can simulate one internally visavis the present MPs.
ReplyDeleteIncreasingly, I am of the view that we shud have a strong opposition to balance the prevailing opinions and agendas that seems one sided. It is the democratic way to ensure that issues which affects our livelihood must not be implemented. Issues such as the liberal admission of foreign workers and grant of citizenships to foreigners must affect singaporeans at some point in their lives. Some may disagree with these policies, and have expressed their opinions. But like the casino debate, they do not stand a chance in avoiding its implementation.
A strong opposition must be the answer to the present stranglehold in govt, preferably a democracy culture similar to the ones in Taiwan or Thailand where freedom of expression are allowed free rein.
a strong opposition party waiting in the wings is the people's assurance that if they do not like the policies of the govt and the direction it is heading they have some one to turn to.
ReplyDeleteunder the one party rule, the politicians could be cocky and shaft everything down our throats whether we like it or not. the pinnacle duxton case is a good example. they said it's fair, then it is fair. no one can dispute their definition of fairness or goodness. and there have been many policies that we don't agree with, the cpf, the high medical fees, high property and rental costs, the foreign talents etc etc.
there must be an alternative or else during a GE the people are just left with no choice. we should work for such an eventuality and let the full benefits of a democracy work for the people.
To say it fairly,
ReplyDeletethere were opposition parties, call them alternatives, if it makes You feel better.
BUT,
other than the people of Hougang and Potong Pasir, Alternative Parties and their candidates did not impress the voters in other constituencies.
Now, Tan Kin Lian is the New Kid in the Game. Let's give him encouragements.
I wish redbean will join him(TKL).
patriot
i agree the opposition seems too weak and ineffective, becos the best candidates were culled away during the tea parties. for some reasons those enlightened choose to join the host party instead of the hassle of making out on their own. i personally dun see my prospects in making out with the weaker parties so i dun blame them. if there is any consolation, at least we still have a good ruling party.
ReplyDeletethe feminine sex thinks differently however, they prefer security and safety and find appeal in the established party. afterall, sg is a women's haven, wherelse could they have so many protections and rights? if they were born in batam, manila, bangkok or phnom penh, what might have become of them? maybe the best they could be is a job as a traffic controller in the streets or worse.
i think too much uniformity and a well organised environment sucks. abit of chaos and diversity shud be good. they have it in the world's cities, new york, paris, london, beijing, shanghai, bangkok but noticeably absent in singapore. the atmosphere in sg is commercially driven and staged by big budgets, evidently not natural or spontaneous at all. you see that same tyep of staging during big events like somebody's birthday in nkorea. dear leader's day or somthing.
Hi Anon 4:53 pm 20 Dec 08;
ReplyDeleteme like to recommend You to read Mollymeek of To Fix A Mockingbird, eastcoastlife, Gayle Gohs' and Clarissas' Blogs. These are(were) Lady Bloggers that give(gave) the men a good run for attitudes, comparatively.
yes, it is so easy to just join the winning side. why take the risk and the harder path? the time will come when joining the winning side may not be the right thing to do when the ends are compromised.
ReplyDeletethat day is approaching, when you look at the end of the rainbow and find that things are quite ugly actually. then some of the brightest minds, there are many out there, many are scholar brands, will decide to take a different path.
this is how history will repeat itself. when change is due, change will be.
