Singaporeans could be a happier lot

Yes, with so much wealth, a disneyland like environment, Singaporeans could all be much happier, more contented if there are less criticism and cynicism of the ways things are. If only Singaporeans just count on their blessings and be happy with what they are and do what they are supposed to do, this will be the dreamland of happy people. The people who are supposed to sweep the floor or wipe the tables, be happy doing it. The workers work and do their best, the food courts serve their best dishes, the businesses do their roaring businesses and the let the politicians run the country as they are supposed to. How nice things can be. The fault lies with all the critics and cynics. They should stop all the gripes and kpkb. Let all and one perform their fated roles in life and all will be fine. There is really no big problems here. Everyone has a job, a roof over their head, clothing and enough food to eat. It is a real paradise. Just look at the beautiful parts of everything around us. The future can only be more beautiful.

  1. Kinda reminds me of the Destiny Project in the Gundam Seed Destiny anime.

Everyone is pre-determined into the kinda jobs they are suitable for and will have to do it for the rest of their lives.

Really cool, except that there will be nothing to look forward to in the thing called LIFE.

  2. hi jetreroy,

the concept is nothing new really. it is pure confucianism, perpetuated for the good of the rich and mighty. it demands that the poor be happy with their lot as that is life's destiny.

the position of the rich and powerful shall be protected and preserved as they are. they are destined to enjoy the better things in life. everyone must be happy and don't complain.

  3. there is always death to look forward to, how you want to get there, screaming, towcowing or anything in the process of living to death is personal decision or is it?

  4. I am happy listening to the critics and cynics and am sure they are happier Singaporeans when they can kpkb whenever and wherever they like. And if more ordinary sporeans can kpkb freely, this society would be paradise.

  5. hi dogaf, welcome to the blog.

the psychiatrists may approve having an avenue for people to kpkb, to let go steam. it is healthier to have an outlet to dispense away the frustration.

but many don't just let go steam. they are unhappy with some issues and want to see changes for the better. it is a kind of communication and depending on how the other party takes the criticism. if the mindset is positive, some good can come out of it. if the mind is closed or vindictive, it could generate more heat and counter productive behaviour.

  6. Singaporeans should be happy. You have a good island city, good infrastructure, good school and generally a safe place to live and bring up the children.

  7. yes speed, we have had 45 good years. down the road things are looking not too good. that is why we need to kpkb now before it gets to the point of no return.

  8. Don't kpkb too much. Like someone once said, the people who kpkb too much should experience a dose of alternative govt. When that happens the market will crash, everything will go wrong and your mothers and sisters will be maids in other people's countries. Now you do not want that to happen, do you? When it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.

  9. you are right speed. that is a frightening but good advice. singaporeans better take note.

  10. If there are alot of unhappiness it may be becos the country has become successful. In the 60s life was relaxed and easy as today's underdeveloped countries tend to be, in the 70s and 80s we looked forward to great expansion and life was good. If you look at the developed countries today, you see the same type of grunts and unhappiness, frustrations and cynicism, and the prevalence of intense competition and me first culture, the moods and trends in Singapore today reflect the status of a developed nation. If we yearn and hanker for the easy going and relaxed ways of the past, we may have to go back in time to do it all over again.

Singapore is fine. If you do not like the concept of Singapore Inc that is based on profits and growth you have the choice to vote in an alternative team which offers more heart and more Singaporean first policies above the dollars and cents. We may have less foreign workers, less foreign talents and the country may be less dynamic, less thriving if that makes you happy. To say that the country will go straight downhill as a result of that, that sounds abit far fetched and incredible. This is no longer the 60s and like redbean has pointed out, the local talents in Singapore today are enough to fill an hdb estate many times over. Besides the foreign talents, there are local talents too and it is a great insult to say otherwise.

  11. we are doing fine for many years. and we should continue to do fine in the future for the good of everyone. personally i feel that many things are heading in the wrong direction and there is a need to tweak the system, the mindset, to prevent going the path of self destruction.

the high inflation and high cost of living are not sustainable. the high and higher salary structure at the top are unsustainable. it is like a big ponzi scheme. the base must keep expanding to support the top. and we know that the base cannot keep expanding. it will grind to a halt just like any economic system. a consistent 7 or 10% growth every year is unsustainable. 10% growth in 10 years is 100% or doubling the economy, and not taking into account the compound effect.

no way can we go on like this. the faster and harder we push in this direction, the faster we will hit the wall.

time to slow down a little and spread the wealth and kindness wider to the less able. the way the old hags are hoarding and grabbing all the money is unhealthy.

  12. Before the mushrooms of trade and finance, jobs were scared. When the boom began, Robinsons had their field days at raffles place, prices of food doubled and tripled from 10 cents very quickly and detached houses shot up umpteen percent from $10,000; the trishaw riders and stevedores in the boat quays those days might have wondered too if the new economy unfolding before them was substainable. The old days have certainly faded, some old jobs may have self destructed, but the economy not.

  13. i dare bet that this time round the crisis is not so easy to resolve by the mere fact that the population is large, the cost of living very high and the amount of loans hanging on the necks of the people are no small change. many are borrowing in the hundreds of thousands and millions.

it is living on the edges of a blade.

  14. i agree redbean but there are more millionaires born in sg every year than anywhere; if you could think of a fattening yet delicious diet and sell it, and then connoct some cream to take the fats off and invest in some exercise machines, i bet that you too can become the next billionaire.

  15. Not mad, but if you could convince others that you hold a golden scissor, you too could own 2 spacious designer apartments like david's.

  16. david gan is a rare talent. just a few cuts and a few touches by his fingers and a woman will become more beautiful. and they have the honour of calling him friend.

these are people they called celebrities.
