"To be the prime minister, you don't have to know every instrument, but you got to recognise, ah, he's a good violinist, he'll be the first violinist, he'll be the double bass. He will play the viola, he will have the trumpet, he will do the drums. Then you coordinate them and then you have great music. And if you already have a great orchestra, you can put a dummy there and you still got great music." Lee Kuan Yew
To be the prime minister, you also don't have to know for sure whether 'mee siam' needs hum. Aga aga also can.
ReplyDeleteThis has got to be the dumbest, most embarrassing thing ever uttered by Lee Kuan Yew. It is a really inaccurate metaphor.
ReplyDeleteHe has no knowledge of the arts, and specifically the production of orchestral music.
he does not need to know much about music and arts. he knows his cabinet and politics and that's good enough.
ReplyDeletenow you have said the dumbest thing.
Oh yes, he knows his 'cabinet' and what is hidden inside. Ong Teng Cheong tried a peek and was removed.
ReplyDeleteredbean gets upset when I criticise his "hero".
ReplyDeleteahhhhhhchoooo.
ReplyDeleteexcuse me. now what were you saying? : )
i try to look only on the good side of people. hear only the good stuff.
LOL, lao hero scored F9 for music too.
ReplyDeleteappreciating music is a cultured taste, a discipline. if one is not trained and has limited knowledge of music, at best, as i always tell my friends, is that we only enjoy the sound, the melody and mood it puts us in.
ReplyDeletewithout an education in music, we don't have much clue of what is music and what the composer and the musicians were trying to impress us.
I agree. Music, like a painting, porno, movies, theatre... anything created by "creative" people, is to be enjoyed for the emotions it stimulates in the audience (consumer)
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't worry too much about what the composers or musicians are trying to do to "impress" the rest of us. Most of them take drugs and are sexual perverts anyway.
mozart and beethoven took drugs?
ReplyDeletei am not sure about the classical composers, but i agree that many of the pop culture are.
At the time alcohol was the most popular social drug in Europe. Later came opium and cocaine, both available over the counter.
ReplyDeletePeople these days conflate "drug" with "illegal", and that is a mistake. You can get very high on alcohol and even die from overdose.
