Resign if the cost of living is not brought down!
That was what the Taiwanese PM was told. That was how serious their parliament viewed the issue of cost of living as it affects the majority of the electorate.
It will be politically incorrect or suicidal for any MP to ask the PM to resign because the cost of living cannot be brought down. It will be an easier and pleasant ride to pretend that the cost of living is not a problem, or simply ignore it and talk about gay and something else.
What I hope to see is for an honourable and gutsy MP who is passionate enough about the issue to stand up and say, 'I will resign if the cost of living is not brought down.' Now, that would not be too offensive and would be more palatable to hear. At least more meaningful than about discipline children.
In Taiwan they resign if cost of living is not brought down. In Singapore they tell you to buy cheaper brand.
ReplyDeleteGood comparison.
oh, that's the way to bring down the cost of living. and i think it will be very effective if everyone does it.
ReplyDeletein S'pore, all the PAP MPs wear white to CONFORM. How can there be dissent?
ReplyDeletewhen the country gets all the high networth individuals to stay or invests here, the country benefits from gst taxes,
ReplyDeletedoes the population REALLY benefits?
when cost goes up as a result of these policies,
does the population then suffer from the rising and runaway costs?
seems like a win-lose reality which everyone is told to accept...
simply becos IT CANT BE HELPED.
the gst had accompanying slashes in taxes of other form. so the idea is that things do balance out - or at least the tax burden gets evenly spread across the demographics.
ReplyDeletethis time it is really due to external forces. really.
ReplyDeleteThis time it is due partly to the GST, ERP and rental increases. Besides the usual components of the CPI, have they taken into account the increase in prices of food that you eat in the hawker centres outside of your office? Higher land cost translate into higher rentals translate into higher cost of food and services.
ReplyDeletewhen you get the rich and wealthy to invest and stay here, you will import inflation to some extent. imagine everything here is so cheap cheap cheap to them. when costs of living go up, who suffers? no doubt the collection of gst and taxes will increase which may appear to benefit the country's savings.
ReplyDeletecraps and bullshits aside, how does that ACTUALLY benefit you is what i fail to see, when you ended up in big minuses becos of these.
Perhaps we can have 2 society in SGP...
ReplyDeleteThe haves... can continue the normal way.
The don'ts... well... maybe there are alternatives...
1. We can down grade to a smaller apartment, or we can pool our resources and bunk in and rent out our apartment, some are already doing, just ask the MAT next door.
2. Ask ShengSong to start a hypermart.
3. Tell PAP to make public transport more affordable, or open up for private competition.
4. Stop gasoline tax for 2 years to ride out the inflatory price until IR is done, as gst has already gone up.
5. Perhaps we can all wear white, plain white is cheaper as no dying is required.
6. Request PAP to build ONE ROOM flat so that we can all go back to the 1960s where it was a bit squeezy, afterall we will be heading for 6.5 million.
7. Pray that the Chinese & Indians can stop buying or decide to go back to the stone age.
8. eat less meat and more rice.
ReplyDelete9. eat one meal a day.
10. lights off before 9pm.
11. move to jurong or woodlands.
if u feel the neighborhood coffee shops are overcharging drinks (up to $1.00 plus), u should stop ordering drinks to go with your meals and opt instead to fix your own coffee or milo at home or the workplace.
ReplyDeleteactually i still prefer my coffee from coffee bean. i have no problem paying $3.50 for my cuppa. no need to downgrade or go for substitution yet. and let them raise it to $4. no sweat, just like taxi fare. raise it to $10 for flagdown fare. you want comfort and quality you pay.
ReplyDeletecan't afford it, take bus or mrt. can't afford public transport, walk.
i encourage the use of bicycles, great aerobic exercise on the way to work, and saves money too. coffee bean? better drink plain water and eat plain bread with it instead, it is good and cheap. can't cope? shift to yishun or the causeway, it can't be helped. besides these great often discussed suggestions, are there any other suggestions to cope with the rise and rise of today's living costs please?
ReplyDeletecan't afford to live, DIE.
ReplyDeleteeven a stupid cow must know what the rise in costs of living is doing to everyone.
