the gutsy little woman
politics aside, and ignoring who is right and wrong, there is this little woman that i feel so sorry for, and so deserving of my admiration.
all her stories and pain are deeply etched all over her face. Reticent, hardened, determined, and not breathing a word, and no time for tears.
she is fighting bravely, quietly and losing everyday, in a battle that was lost from the very first day. but she plods on, she marches on. she is not going to give up. she rather loses everything fighting.
a lonely fighter standing loyally and stoically beside her broken brother.
she is an admirable little woman.
My heart goes out to her too. sigh... it's sad how things like this can happen to people with good intentions in Singapore. Though the events that are happening is kind of expected......

Chee lacks a political strategist in his team (a-la Karl Rove) who can advise him to be wary of slippery slopes, accumulate and score points with the skeptical and largely brain-washed (read PAP-conditioned) electorate and not to go where angels fear to tread. It does not help that Chiam has openly fallen out with him and Chee cannot depend on a united opposition front to counter the numerous lightning strikes and thunderbolts hurled at his party. It is admissible that the SDP has steadily built up credible and useful connections and relationships these past years with re-nown world-wide democratic movements. But it is precisely this close-knit link with like-minded NGOs elsewhere on the globe that has made the PAP sit up and taken sight of SDP with their big guns and cannons. Yes, remember that LKY says that politics is a high-stakes game - and it's sometimes more important than life-and-death. The victor doesn't exactly share the spoils with the vanquished. When one party wins the majority of the seats, it gets the power (read mandate) to govern and enforce (sometimes totalitarian) control. Strong mandate means more power and the stick to wield control gets to be stouter. The losers are invariably blockaded in the political wilderness, openly derided in the media, regularly shamed, continually embarrassed and sometimes quite irrationally sued into bankruptcy and/or banished or sent into involuntary exile. While Chiam and Low are largely concerned with local and municipal issues (e.g. lift upgrading programs (LUP), blocked drains, bus-stop locations, progress packages etc), the SDP has taken the canny and visionary step to create international awareness of how lopsided the political field has degenerated into, and the many draconian measures taken to brow-beat opposition figures and to stifle competition. And that has made them the PAP's biggest enemies. And it's quite natural to want to eliminate your enemies. On the flip side, if the sister does get elected into parliament against all the mountainous odds stacked against her, it'll do her battered, emotionally-wrecked brother a world of good.
