US delays China chip tariffs until 2027 amid trade truce
Officials said the timing would allow Washington to maintain leverage without derailing broader negotiations with Beijing.
WASHINGTON: The United States will impose new tariffs on Chinese semiconductor imports but has delayed the move until June 2027, the Trump administration said on Tuesday (Dec 23), signalling an effort to preserve a fragile trade truce with Beijing.
The Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) said the tariffs would target Chinese “legacy” or older-technology chips, following a year-long investigation into what Washington called Beijing’s “unreasonable” push for dominance in the semiconductor industry. The tariff rate will be announced at least 30 days before taking effect. CNA
The Americans continue with their incessant attacks on China in all fields, in trades and technology etc etc. Anyone thinking that this trade war will stop for any reason needs to get his head checked. This is America's war to bring down China so that the Americans can continue to sit on top of the pecking world order. It is about American control and dominance, about the American Empire.
Now, why would the Americans want a pause? Oh, a pause for more negotiations? My toes are laughing. The Americans would not hold back anything to destroy China. The real reasons, they cannot do away with the Chinese legacy chips and the Chinese supply chains. American industries, especially the automobile industries would run into an abrupt halt without the Chinese chips. They are fully dependent on China to keep the lights on in the factories. F35s have stopped production and delivery for shortage of rare earths.
It would be better for China just to cut off the supply chains and chips and see the American factory workers having to stand down, unable to continue with their production. Just because the Americans are delaying chip tariff does not mean that China will continue to supply them with what they want. A complete decoupling should be the goal. Yes, the American balls are being squeezed by China in their stupid and unthinking war with their main suppliers, or as they said, war against their bankers and creditors. Only the clowns in Washington cannot see the stupidity and futility of this war that they cannot win.
Go on and raise tariffs on Chinese chips, do not be afraid, do not be shy. Who are you bluffing?
PS. The American pirates have started to attack Chinese tankers. China must respond to such piracy directly or indirectly. China must hit back.

ReplyDeleteAll the signs are that Trump is backing off using hardcore tactics dealing with China which will hurt the USA even more. Why delay tariffs on chips signaling to China that the USA cannot afford to decouple from China and that is a fact cast in stone. Most consumer products, even toys, whether imported or made in USA are now highly dependent on legacy chips, not Rolls Royce chips that play to a different audience.
Just attempting to strangle China by seizing Nexperia already shows how dependent the USA itself is on legacy chips that affected the whole motor vehicle industry in Europe, USA and Japan as well. That is just one particular sector having to deal with just one Chinese entity inside China. When we talk of the whole manufacturing eco-system having to shut down if those tariffs are not being delayed, it is seeing the problem in actual perspective.
So, as the chip war ensues, are we focus on seeing the wood for the trees and not knowing which is important and which is just hype. Only when the shit hits the fan can we know what reality is and what is hype.
The USA can fool most countries all the time, some countries most of the time, but not all countries all the time. Now even using military threat is becoming redundant. Ask the three ideological entities, the three 'H" - Houthis, Hamas and Hezebollah. Just ideological entities like Al-Qaeda and ISIS that can never be killed off with military might.
