Hsien Loong – an admission of incompetence?
At the conference on Singapore Perspectives organized by the Institute of Public Policies, Hsien Loong surprised the audience of local and foreign dignitaries by admitting that the govt was not perfect and had caused a lot of problems related to the influx of foreigners and the squeeze on building housing and infrastructure to cope with this high demand. This is the second time after the last GE that he has admitted to flaws in govt policies. This is reported in Channel News Asia, ‘Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has admitted the government did not have 20/20 foresight, resulting in problems with inadequate infrastructure in the country….’
What is Hsien Loong trying to achieve for this admission? For a govt that prides itself as the best in the world and paying itself out of this world salaries, will the people accept such a grotesque mistake when you don’t need a university professor to see the problems coming up? When the govt brought in 2m people in such a short space of time and neglected in ramping up the supporting infrastructure and housing to provide for such a huge number of people, is it a case of mistake, incompetence or something else? It is not unbelieveable. It is amazing!
The most horrifying part is the freeze in building housing when any idiot will know that 2 million people would need that much more roofs over their heads. And this 2m number is nearly a doubling the population of slightly more than 3m, bringing the population to 5m plus. This is not an elephant in the class room. It is a dinosaur and nobody could see it and to provide for it. And we paid millions for the super talents to at least do a decent job. Can we expect them to see the dinosaur? Hey, no rocket science ya?
So what, shall the people excuse and forgive the govt for this oversight? We are not talking about any third world govt that are paid peanuts. We are paying everyone of them, the crème al crème, according to their weight in gold and more.
What do you think?
Making mistakes is human. Human error.
ReplyDeleteHuman error doesn't necessarily mean human incompetence. We all make mistakes and even the smartest of us behave less than intelligently on many occasions.
At least Lee has the content of character to admit to error. Give credit where it's due.
No one is error free, nor can any human choice be 100% error free.

ReplyDeleteLeaders were chosen to lead.
ReplyDeleteThey cannot say that they lack foresight or is surprised by sudden turn of event.
If there is any sudden turn of events or something unexpected happened, they should readily change to improve the situations!
What is happening now is like applying plaster everytime something happens, while at the same time praying nothing goes wrong anymore...
I do not think a wise leader will or should behave this way.
Concurs fully.
DeleteWhen plans are actuated without considerations of consequences and implications, it is purely incompetency.
When importation of aliens as foreigner workers as well as settlers near a decade ago, almost all the social political bloggers were up in arms against it. It was no freak protest. These same bloggers are still at it despite the implementations taking place for so long.
Why are bloggers still at it?
PLEASE BE INFORMED, ESPITE THE DECADE AGE PROTESTATION(BY BLOGGERS AND AVAILABLE AT THEIR ARCHIVES/READ THEM. ONE, DARKNESS, IS ACTIVE HERE. FIND HIM AT THE BLOGSITEs INTELLIGENT SINGAPOREAN SND DOTSENG. ALSO LUCKY TAN, TOC, TRE etc) AND THIS VERY SITE.
What happens is that the Bloggers and their literatures were treat with disdains and ig not, liked non existent. This is one statement me hsd made numerous times.
In fact, the Rulers kept upping and up-sizing the implementations as if to spite the Bloggers as well all Singaporeans. They want Sinkies to be cheaper, faster and better than the people they(Rulers) brought in from underdeveloped/undeveloped countries. See their audacity?
The Rulers knowingly work against the interest of the locals AND YET THE DAFT SINKIES VOTED THEM REPEATEDLY TO BULLY THEM(VOTERS). True; some cronies did and are benefitting from the Policies. UNFORTUNATELY, THE REST ARE VICTIMIZED AND OR DISADVANTAGED.

The intention to have some many millions in population was already clearly spelt out in "The Next Lap" - a 160-page long-term plan published on 22 Feb 1991. There is absolutely no excuse to pretend that they were caught unaware, or that they are trying to take advantage of the upswing.
ReplyDeleteMRT lines may take up to 10 years to build, but what about hospitals and public housing? These can be up and running in 2,3 or 4 years. But the PAP had nearly 22 years of notice to get the infrastructure going - yet they were sleeping on the job. Or, the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing.
It's totally unbelievable that we paid the world's highest salary to all these elite ministers to have such incompetence!
ReplyDeleteOn the next hand, they are also blaming the social media for their failure. PleaseEEEEEEEEEEEEE, Singaporeans will not and cannot be so daft all the time. The harder you try to shaft a dagger down our throat, the stronger the resilence to fight back!!!!! They have not wake up, have they?
LHL was given a chance to lead his party as well as the nation. He has been found wanting. In other countries people in the party would have begun to question his ability to lead. Whispers of resignation may have snow balled into a revolt within the party.
ReplyDeleteBut this is Spore. Dont expect anything to happen.
Given their pay packets and treatments like VIP AND CELEBRITY, probably many will be hoping to have someone in their families succeeding in the appointment.
DeleteHow to expect revolt; dont even dream of it.

It is incredible for him to say that he knows how many people there will be in 10 years time but he can not predit how many more home will be needed. Where are they going to stay? in hotels or camping in the open? Our roads can not taking in more cars,do we expecting the next 2 or 3 mil people coming here will live without cars? Sure they know the answers but will not do anything just to keep property price and COE up
ReplyDeleteI am one of the 60.1% daft sinkie n stop lambasting, we noe we so salah, OK!!!
ReplyDeleteEnough sayangsayang PAP oready. I do not accept the mistake. Hsien Loong, pls fire yr incompetent ministers MBT n KBW. They are supposed to be on the lookout for u.
Why must I pay fare increases, MRT has been given 1 billion, LTY talk rot. Fire him too.
Stop the 'gaji buta' and start cleaning house. This is not the right legacy for yr father to go.
Since I'm here, this for Matilah : change yr gravatar to someting decent can or not. The only time I read yr comment w/o chest pain was the week leading to Australian day. Other than PAP, U making me ulcer ....
Hi CK and Shirley See, welcome to the blog.
ReplyDeleteIf the people are paying them 20K or 30K a month, the incompetence is excusable. When we are paying them hundreds of thousands a month, there is no excuse. We are paying good money for competence, not excuses and blunders.
Have them reduce their remunerations or better reduce the size of the Cabinet.
ReplyDeleteAfter all New York City at over 1100 square kilometres is run by only a mayor.
It is best to give no single political party 2/3 or more of the seats in Parliament. Therefore, hopefuly in the Next GE, all the Ex- Army Parliamentarians, Sweet talking Clown, Smiling tiger and student irritater be voted out and replaced with more people friendly Alternative Party Members.

ReplyDeleteDo u think we need to review his education qualification..sigh
ReplyDeleteThis govt is lead by a clown prince.
ReplyDeleteEven if they have 20/20 foresight and even with competent ministers, the increase in population in such a short time will still be a stretch for the existing infrastructure.
But it is ok, still want to be hero, thinking they have the 'talents' to pull it off.
Worst still is the lack of business experience in the Cabinent, making the matter a disaster many times over.
To excuse themselves for lack of foresight is pure nonsense.
ReplyDeleteAs me had commented above; the GOVERNMENT WAS CONSISTENTLY AND PERSISTENTLY REMINDED AND WARNED BY THE PEOPLE IN BLOGOLAND FOR 10 YEARS AND MORE. BUT, THEY CHOSE AND CHOOSE TO RULE AND OVER-RULE THE PEOPLE.
IT IS STILL THE CASE NOW.
ONLY WAY IS TO GET THEM REPLACED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

ReplyDeleteFortunately the people in Punggol East can see that Dr. Koh's service to the people will be compromised, coming as he is from the Party where it seems that most of the newer candidates are also those who are most beholden to the HoLee Dynasty.
Hi RedBean,
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts are rather not about the pay they are receiving, but rather the quality of policies that has been rolling out, the ministers chosen to helm the various department.
A example would be like LTY, ex head of a certain contingent. What credentials does he have to plan for the department he is heading?
Does military personnel really have the credentials to lead a ministry after completing their services?
While in the service, how well are they connected to the real world?
In the real world, you fail in your job means you do not deem the pay you are receiving...
Yesterdays report certainly open up a whole new world for discussion based on his admission at the lack of foresight.
Sigh, more bad times ahead.

I am not surprised that PM could not see the looming gap between infrastructure and population growth. When you have a monolithic party rule since the founding days of SIngapore independence, there is definitely an air of invincibility. It is a party that is full of themselves, they feel that there is only one right ideology, that is the PAP ideology, every thing else will not work or fail. The wind of change demanded by the people is in the air. Not sure whether PAP is truly feeling it. At best, they are in the state of denial. They still think they have control over everything and will change the wind in whichever direction it sees fit.
ReplyDelete6.9 m population, 30000 new PRs every year till 2030; of which 25,000 new citizens every year. When I saw this I feel like crying out; this is no longer Singapore. When will they ever wake up. I implore all Real Singaporeans to do something come 2016. If not it is all gone....

Hi RB, the above is a good link on Sino-Indian War. Many Chinese Singaporeans do not understand how much India Indian hates Chinese.
India has always harbor territorial ambitions against China. Indian soldiers started to eat gradually into Tibet since 1937. China cannot do anything as she was fighting against the Jap.
In a stroke of fortune, Mao ascend in 1949. India's ambition was halted effectively after 1962.
If China today is still like 1937, I am sure Tibet today will be India's territory.
This is why despite Mao being the most wicked person in the whole world history, he is still respected in China.
Singaporeans should see the documentary on the links above. PAP today deliberately import all the fucking Indians to screw us.
Admitting mistakes is easy.
ReplyDeleteRectifying mistakes are difficult.
If by GE2016 the effects of hardship, fairness and proper treatment of its own Citizens over immigrants, and the unbalanced of the rich and the poor are not resolved - more GRCs will go.

Dear Redbean
ReplyDeleteDo not be deceived.
Hsien Loong has not admitted error. He has admitted to not having 20/20 foresight, that is a totally different thing!
Imagine I tell you that I don't have the strength of Hercules, does that mean I admit to be weak???
Hsien Loong has admitted to not having 20/20 foresight; truth is, he should have admitted to have been blind and deaf. That is as far as you can get from admitting not having perfect vision!

The hidden message is that since the infrastructure is inadequate, they are working overtime to build them, so that they can let in another few million foreigners. The story is still the same, more foreigners needed, whatever true blue Singaporeans may say.
ReplyDeleteSo, is the PAP listening? Is the PAP really on Singaporean's side?
Despite all the wayang, he does not walk the talk but talk the cock.
What a blatant scam. the billions that goes into rectifying the mrt and buses service's lack of service is actually meant for reason to import more foreigners. So the vicious cycle continues.
ReplyDeleteSo the free money to these GLC isn't solving any problem at all. We are been deceived again and again.
I remember molly meek write a excellent post on this about throwing money to solve problem but not solving anything because the root cause of the problem remains which is continuing mass flooding of foreigners.
Let me dig the post out later.
LSL also said that next time he would get it right? Really? What if you don't? We the people, not you, will be paying the price for your lack of foresight!

There are so many truths and myths going around. The basic truth is that people who owns a lot of properties would not want property price to come down. Even if they do want it to be, they cannot afford to do so because all their properties will lose money. So what do you think they will do?
ReplyDeleteRobert, I think Hsien Loong left it to his able ministers to take care of their ministries. So cannot blame him lah.

ReplyDeleteIt is why it is not even a myth that old fart has engineered a system to continue vote PAP into power by holding citizens/PR hostage in one way or another.
But at some point, every material has a limit to its tolerance, even diamond.
What do you think ?
If dun blame him blame who...
ReplyDeleteIt is common sense to check those you left in charge now and then..and keep informal/hidden tabs to know things are going well as left to those in charge...
This either means LHL has no common sense..or worse...he knows...
I leave that ramifications to all to think over what it fully mean current and future.
To me, more than 75% of seats by a single party in Parliament is the cause of such problems. With majority rule, no one is serious about discussing issues. Typical scene in parliament where 3/4 of MPs/Ministers are not around. When come to decision, no MP will go against what the aprty has decided. Every issue raised for discussion sure got passed. That is why when DPM talked about Ministerial pay, he said this topic has been debated three times earlier but what he did not say is that it is more wayang than real debate. 99% of Parliament is PAP men. You and me sure know the outcome at the end.
ReplyDeleteLand has been set aside to build another 700,000 homes that is another 2.8 million people for u

And that my friends, seems to summarize the problem of the PAP government.
A bunch of talents sitting around waiting for the Prime Minister to tell them how to use their talents & brains.
Be very careful when this arrogant good for nothing starts to feel remorse. It is a bad sign. More worse thing will come to sinky and sinkies.
ReplyDeleteThey are selling FN, another state owned assets. Are they short of money or are they trying to run away? Will our soft drinks be safe to drink in future?
Perhaps, once all the state owned companies are owned by foreign companies, they do not need to employ locals. They will get their own kind to work in those companies. There will be more and more locals unable to find good employment cos taken up by foreigners.
Perhaps, selling them off they will make a huge pile of money to bring along with them.
I am worried about future of sinky. What are they really up to?
"The basic truth is that people who owns a lot of properties would not want property price to come down" - The gov should put in tough restrictions when people want to own more than 1 property especially when there is not so much land in first place. But they allow it to happen for a reason.
ReplyDeleteWell if you ride the MRT or take a bus every day, you will see & feel the effect of the 2m+ immigrants. However if you are paid millions and are closetted in an "ivory tower" office daily, you dont get the feel & the sight & sound of being squeezed into one of the 6 carriages of a MRT train. Can anyone name a PAP Minister or MP living in an HDB flat?
ReplyDeleteHow would a PAP Minister or MP know the frustrations of being a PMET and is being rejected for a job, when they dont have to apply for any. About the only people with "iron rice bowls" in Spore are PAP Minsiters & MPs.
Where the PAP ruling class get their feedback? From the "yes men & women" in PA & grass roots; arse licking cronies. Would these people be harbingers of bad news for their god fathers? I doubt.
The amount of money the ministers are being paid does not really come into the picture when ministers fail as badly as ours are doing. It only highlights our stupidity in paying them what they demanded based on promises rather than results.
ReplyDeleteAnyone in a company who performs as badly as the ministers have so far, would be sacked. Ours should be sacked. And should have been 10 years ago.
People have hesitated voting for the opposition on the fear that things will fall apart. We don't have to vote an opposition in for that. Things are falling apart NOW, BADLY, with the so-called experienced PAP in charge. Why are we still allowing them to govern?
If a 6.9 million popn is planned by 2030, that means a minimum of 100,000 people a year being stuffed into this already overcrowded island. So no change in the rate of growth in popn....
Can the PAP guarantee there will be enough Food and Water for all these people? What about jobs?
Certainly our roads will be packed with delivery trucks and buses. Only enough place after that for the fast cars of the rich. No cars for the rest of us.
And pray tell where is this land set aside for all these extra people and all the extra infrastructure needed? Looks like we'll have to go out and annex Johor. And if that's not enough, rent another couple more states from the Malaysians.
BTW, where will the nuclear stations that provide energy be squeezed? Between the schools and hospitals?
In 2050, if he's still alive, Chan Chun Sing can relate to a world body how and why Singapore, a once prosperous nation, fell into rack and ruin, how it was sunk by a greedy thoughtless govt and a people who didn't fight back. How the people only tried to vote the lousy govt out, instead of doing much much more to remove it.
"Be very careful when this arrogant good for nothing starts to feel remorse" - he is going to clam down on social media. Rb has to blog across the causeway and we can only read those stuff across the causeway.

If true, this is good news for Opposition Parties.
Not so good news for PAP, Singapore and Singaporeans.
I think the only way to convince daft Singaporeans to support Opposition parties, is 10 more years of Lee Hsien Loong's PAP.
Maybe the only way for PAP to re-invent themselves is 10 more years of Lee Hsien Loong's leadership.
Hi Charles Soon, welcome to the blog.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that the govt does not think it is necessary to ask the people if 6.9m is what the people want speaks loudly about whether the govt is going to listen to the people or things will be as usual, the govt decides what it wants to do. Period.
When did they ever ask people? THe are a bunch of facists that just gives orders and wants people to follow blindly without thoughts or questions.
ReplyDeleteIf his "explanations" are amazing and incredulous, just excuses - unbelievable as well, and raises ire, anger, outrage, etc....., what could it be then? Half truth, non-truth, economical truth, fantasy, or just plain untruth or lies? We got to call it what it truely is.
